India has become a net exporter of electricity for the first time, the power ministry said on Wednesday, adding that upcoming cross-border transmission lines with neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh and Myanmar will only increase sales.

April-February power exports of around 5,798 million units were 4 percent higher than what India bought from Bhutan, which has been a steady supplier of hydro-electricity to the country since the eighties.

New transmission lines with Bangladesh and Myanmar helped India sell more, the government said.

Known for its crippling power cuts, India has been investing heavily on generation infrastructure over the past few years. A massive surge in the local supply of raw materials like coal in the past two years has also helped power companies boost output.

Some experts, however, say local power demand has grown slower than expected.

If we must sell to banddeshis we should sell at 5x the market rate.

India has transmision problems. Setting up trasnmission networks to remote locations is economically unviable and subsidies have been able to do only little. Jyoti yojna is for solving that. On the other hand we generate 320GW for our needs and supply is not a problem for any economically viable project.

Over 300 million people in India or 60 million households have no access to electricity.

It's less than 47 million as of today and decreasing every day and the best thing is one can see it in real time.

I checked a month or two ago and it was 51 million

There is a difference between generation and transmission. The news in the article means that we are generating more electricity than needed. Supplying electricity to villages is a problem because settings up transmission lines is very expensive.
