Ranchi, Jan 20: It was a historic day on Saturday at the brand new JSCA International Stadium. For the first time, India reached the top of ICC ODI rankings. India's seven-wicket victory over England on January 19 gave them the number one position for the first time in the ICC ODI Championship table.

It was a double delight for MS Dhoni in his hometown - a comprehensive win and number one ranking.*India, who started the five-match ODI series against England, in number three position, have now claimed the top spot once they had held.

Previously, India had reached second spot in ODI rankings. They had been on top of the summit in Tests but not in ODIs. India's best position of number two was achieved in July, 2009. However, they can climbed to number two again in January 2012.

England, who had started the series in top position have slipped to third while South Africa are second in the latest rankings updated by International Cricket Council (ICC) on Saturday night after the completion of South Africa-New Zealand ODI. South Africa lost to New Zealand by one wicket.

However, India, in order to hold onto the top spot, have to win the next ODI in Mohali on January 23. If they lose that game, then England will be back on top of the table.

India are currently with 119 rating points followed by South Africa with 118. England have 116.

If India lose in Mohali to England, they will drop two rating points and will be with 117 while England will gain two rating points and move to 120. But Dhoni-led side can get back to the top again in Dharamsala on January 27 by winning the fifth and final ODI, with which they will take the series as well.

Ground reality is that the mathematical formula that drives the rankings has made india the top team in the rankings at the moment. If what passionate fans say is ''ground reality'' then pakistan would have been the no 1 odi team, but thats not ground reality

Team fortunes keep going up and down, we expect such when the big 4 of our batting and the big guy zaheer were approaching their retirement days.

The fact is that ICC ranks us top, does not make us a good or better team, but does make us the ICC rank 1 team.

As Viv Richards once said.. form is temporary & class is permanent. You must be alluding to the recent blip in the form of Indian team against England & Pakistan. That alone can't be the benchmark to judge overall standing of the team.

In order to become the icc no 1 odi team you have to loose, loose and loose

Also should not new rankings be issued in the start of a new year .....these rankings look absurd .....in 2013 india has lost 3 won 3 thats 50-50 how can they top the list ........

but the ranking can change in a matter of few days if SA beats NZ and eng beats ind..

eng seems to have lost their way ...in last match they were 96-3 and then all out for 155 ...

Thye are missing their main players in light of swann, anderson and stuart broad

Ignorants can't be forced to think. Still I'll give it a try. Two wins don't make anyone no.1 in rankings and similarly a mere 2-1 loss also doesn't make one fall big on the charts BUT a consistent show over a period of time shapes up those rankings. India became no.1 in Test after a purple patch of 2 years and remained no.1 for more than 1.5 years. Indian ODI performances over last 2-3 years overall have been sublime to say the least. Rankings r not determined by a team winning a series. Had it been the case then India would have become no.1 after WC victory in 2011. Rankings are determined by your number of wins and quality/ranking of opposition as well. India has been winning in ODIs consistently and that is showed in the charts. And if one still is dumb enough not to understand it, ICC provides a ranking predictor on its website where one can see the future rankings by merely predicting the results of future ODI fixtures. Go n figure out yourself rather than crying foul every single time. Seriously "tujhko mirchi lagi to main kya karun"
