NEW DELHI: Russia, France, Germany and Spain, all better watch out. They may have to contend with Japan in the race to supply submarines to India. In keeping with their expanding strategic partnership, the Modi government has asked the Shinzo Abe administration whether it would be interested in the over Rs 50,000 crore project to build six stealth submarines in India.

With Japan recently ending its decades old self-imposed arms export embargo, New Delhi has forwarded "a proposal" to Tokyo to "consider the possibility" of making its latest diesel-electric Soryu-class submarines in India, say sources.

This "feeler" dovetails into PM Narendra Modi's strategic outreach to Japan, as well as Australia and the US, since he took over last year. The possible sale of Japanese US-2i ShinMayva amphibious aircraft to the Indian Navy is already being discussed. Australia, too, is considering the Soryu submarines to replace its ageing Collins-class vessels.

The US, on its part, has been pushing for greater defence cooperation among India, Japan and Australia to counter China's assertiveness in the Asia-Pacific region. The recent Obama-Modi summit led to the "joint strategic vision for Asia-Pacific and Indian Ocean Region" with a direct reference to South China Sea, where China is locked in territorial disputes with its neighbours. Both Japan and Australia are also keen to participate in the annual Indo-US Malabar naval exercise on a regular basis, which has riled China in the past.

But the 4,200-tonne Soryu submarines, manufactured by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, may not meet Indian requirements. Japan will also be just one of the contenders for the mega programme, called Project-75-India, if it agrees to throw its hat into the ring.

Countries like France (ship-builder DCNS), Germany (HDW), Russia (Rosoboronexport) and Spain (Navantia) are already girding up, with the first three having the experience of building submarines for India.

The six new submarines, with both land-attack missile capabilities and air-independent propulsion for greater underwater endurance, are to be built at an Indian shipyard with foreign collaboration. "If Japan is really interested, it will have to form a joint venture with an Indian public/private shipyard," said the source.

The Modi government wants to kick-start Project-75-I, which has not taken off due to politico-bureaucratic apathy since being accorded "acceptance of necessity" in November 2007, in the backdrop of India's rapidly depleting conventional submarine fleet.

A high-level committee, led by Vice Admiral AV Subhedar, is slated to submit a report to the defence ministry next month on the domestic shipyards which are capable of submarine-manufacturing. "The tender or RFP (request for proposal) to the shipyards should be issued this year," he said.

The Soryu submarines, incidentally, were inducted into the Japanese maritime self-defence force from 2009 onwards. Already equipped with AIP, Japan is now working to install lithium-ion battery propulsion systems in its next-generation of the Soryu submarines.

This is how India will get American Submarine technology :D Some serious planning under way . Australia Japan India. Lots of funds involved. Potential threat Chinese Aging submarines fleet.
But let's wait and see . India may choose Russia this time . We already pissed Russians big time

can I bring you up the next time an Indian member ask why do we bring up India in a non Indian thread?

Dont bring any country or criticism in this thread.. better compare and analyse all 5 makers and possible offerings to understand what could suit India best.
IMHO Soryu class seems smaller in nature unless Japan is planning a bigger sub for itself with say US help or in similar lines which could then serve both India and Japan. But its interesting piece of news. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is getting courted in a big way.. i like that... its expertise and experience is beneficial for multiple projects in India. Hope someday our L&T can become India's Mitsubishi....

Its a simple request. There is no guarantee Japan will even take part. But its good to be positive!

If we can get technologies from various countries, we can integrate them on one platform and make the final product which is better than the best.

How it's is non Indian thread . When it's about India want to by subs from Japan ? And elephant in the room is China. All three powers are now working together for wat ? Attack pirates in SCS ?

Wow!!!!!
India is the only country that has access to high end technology from any part of the world.
Why stop at submarines? Get them involved with 5th generation fighters.
They already in advanced stage to develop their first 5th gen fighter . They might help us .

How will you replace all your aging submarines by 2020 or 2025. China will have less numbers in 2030 than it is now . Another 5 will be added till 2022 . Aged submarines will be sitting dolphins against modern day ASW . Not to forget already 6 scorpions under construction and 6 more will be built under P75 programme by 2025-2027 . Along with 6 more Arihant at the same time . May be another Add on orders will be provided for 4 more scorpion to manage aging submarines fleet. This is only about India. Now add Vietnam Japan Australia .... it will be easily outmatch china in all fronts

Looks like india will have 8 old upgraded subs , 6 scorpions ,6 P75 programme, 3 Arihant + 6 Advanced Arihant + 3 Russia Nuclear subs by 2027 . If there is no delays.(hopefully won't be there or may be . No one can predict) these are without follow on orders. Now add 4 each on Scorpions which is built in India and 4 more p75 ( hopefully russia) after 2027. Atleast 37-40 subs by 2030 .

In the next 15 years Chinese will add 15 -16 subs . 60% subs are aging subs from Soviet era in Chinese fleet of 60+ .

India alone can match .

This is surely an opportunity for both Japan and India to joint develop. I say, there should be more military R&D cooperation. Let the subs be a starting point.

Mr among non nuclear China has only 13 to replace they still 26 very new or 10 to 15 years old in Nuclear they have around 20 new and 10 to 15 years old they have 5 extra old ones which they will soon replace and by 2022 they would have build 12 at least more and if they start producing in war mode than 20 more Submarines mate

So what??Their diesel electric subs won't have enough range and endurance to come here in IOR,let alosne take part in some naval campaign or something.
They are building both Nuclear and Diseal and those Diesal ones are equipped with AIP technology they can reach your sea stay there for more than month and return @Horus

Hope someday our L&T can become India's Mitsubishi....
I too hope the same but any idea who owns the L&T? Its head/ceo never seems to retire and their most of directors are above 70 yrs of age. it needs a fresh blood at the helm. I am told govt. owned BHEL is better managed than L&T.
