NEW DELHI: India has secured a place among the world's 10 largest manufacturing countries as the share of major industrialised economies in global factory output fell significantly in the last decade, a UNIDO report said on Tuesday.
Efficient use of energy, helped by enhanced labour productivity and increase in exports of manufactured goods, helped the country secure its position among the top 10 industrial producers.

Even though the country had only 1.8 per cent share in the world manufacturing which contributes 16 percent to the gdp between 2000 and 2010, India occupies the 9th position among the global leading manufacturing countries. This is in stark contrast to China;where manufacturing contributes 34 per cent to the gdp and is 13.7 percent of world manufacturing.

"Competitiveness of Indian manufactured goods in the global markets has significantly improved," Chief Statistician of the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Shyam Upadhyaya said while releasing the report.

Higher output growth rates have allowed the Indian industry to improve major performance indicators such as labour productivity, he said. The country has made significant progress in the use of energy for industrial production.

"This is borne out of the fact that in the last 10-years, India's manufacturing output grew by 7 per cent average per annum while industrial energy consumption grew at much lower rate of 3.6 per cent," Upadhyaya said.

The US tops the list of 10-top industrial producers followed by China, Japan and Germany. Brazil was at the bottom of the list. "Ranks are not stable due to close competition of emerging economies. In the coming years, Russia, Mexico and Spain might increase their share and occupy higher position," he said.

Industrialised countries account for more than two-third of the world industrial output, but the share of developing countries is rising from 20 per cent in 2000 to 32.1 per cent in 2010.

As per the report, in the last decade, share of major industrialised countries such as the US, Japan and Germany in the world manufacturing has fallen. The report said manufacturing output of three developing countries, China, Brazil and India, has grown by almost 10 per cent on an average in the last decade.

The UNIDO report said manufacturing output grew by 3.7 per cent in the industrialised countries after experiencing a severe decline in 2009. It further said that China's industrial growth was unaffected during the recent economies crisis. "The country accounted for almost half of total manufacturing output of all developing countries in 2010," it said.

Changing Top Manufacturing Countries (1980-2010)

The developing countries have made their way more and more in the top 10 of global manufacturing countries. While you might expect China on the first spot, the United States as being the world's biggest economy is still the largest manufacturing producer. Brazil has advanced up to the sixth place. India just entered the top 10 in 2010 and Russia especially made a big jump from place 12 in 2000 to 11 in 2010.

@45'22' Major chunk of the India is economic based on agri and services sector. It will be good to know where do we stand in those fields.
Post if you have some info available on hand.

Long way to go on the manufacturing front. We should be in the top 3, if we want to become a developed nation, given our size.

That's the problem. You would notice that all developed countries have a larger share of manufacturing than agri. An agrarian economy cannot be prosperous and competitive in this age. We really need to shift at least partly to a manufacturing and industrialized economy, instead of relying on agriculture for most of our GDP.

I concur!
We need fast processing (single window system), less bureaucracy, better infra structure and Most importantly good Govt. Policies to encourage manufacturing and create an self sustaining eco-system.

Indian agriculture contributes to around 14 percent of gdp which is slightly above average if we compare it with countries like china whose agricuture contributes to around 10 per cent of gdp........
Agriculture's share in GDP declines to 13.7% in 2012-13 - Economic Times
Agriculture, value added (% of GDP) | Data | Table

India needs to work on its manufacturing sector which is quite poor in terms of its world share
acc. to anand sharma, our manufacturing sector will contribute to around 25 percent of gdp as compared to present share of 15 percent of gdp in another decade
India needs to look beyond IT and BPO, says Anand Sharma - Business Today

in terms of service industry........its share in indian gdp is around 60 percent
Service Sector in India, Service Industry in India, Services Sector

in terms of global services trade,India ranks 7
India's contribution to world services is around 5 percent......US leads this list with its share of 10 per cent
India is one of the 5 countries among the top 10 world players that ended with a surplus of trade in 2011
India ranks 7th in global services trade - Financial Express

This should not satisfy us in any way.... with the resources we have or we are planning to build we should be at least in top 2 and that should be our aim...... (i am sure we cannot beat china in a long future)

So where would be getting the food? Agri and its related economy should be developed. For example, agricultural needs, such as tractors , motors, fertilizers can be manufactured and exported in a large scale, helping both agri and manufacturing. More machining is req in agriculture nowadays.

This data is outdated.

yep..........new data is unavailable.........considering the fact that Indian economy is improving,i think at best we can consider these data as the latest ones would be even better......................

if u have any news regarding the topic........please feel free to share :china:
