India against sending UN probe team to Sri Lanka - Yahoo News India

New Delhi, July 15 (ANI): The Indian Government has reiterated that it is against sending an United Nations investigation team to Sri Lanka to probe human rights violations allegedly committed by the Sri Lankan security forces during the decades-long war.

The previous UPA Government of India abstained from voting on the UN resolution adopted in March this year at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva mandating the investigation to be led by the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights.

India voted against the specific paragraph of the resolution, Operative Paragraph 10 that called for sending an international team to Sri Lanka, reports the Colombopage.

During the discussions held between India's External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and her Sri Lankan counterpart Minister G. L. Peiris in New Delhi recently, Swaraj had told Prof. Peiris that there is no change in India's position on the issue.

Speaking at a media briefing following the meeting, India's External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin recalled that India abstained on the resolution and also voted against the specific paragraph that wanted to send a team to the island."Our views are pretty clear on this.

"This is not about a country specific issue; this is a matter of principle that we have always held," Akbaruddin had told the reporters then. (ANI)

Vaiko urges Modi to ensure well-being of Tamils in Sri Lanka | Business Standard News

Deploring the status of minority Tamils in Sri Lanka, NDA constituent MDMK today urged the Modi Government to take 'appropriate steps' to ensure their well-being and opposed deepening commercial and economic relations between Indiaand Sri Lanka.

Party founder Vaiko in a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modisaid a spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs had reportedly justified India abstaining from voting on a Lanka specific motion at the UN Human Rights Council in March this year on a Lanka specific motion.

He asked if it was the official stand of the NDA government to "endorse the attitude of betrayal of Tamils committed by the previous UPA Government in the human rights council meeting."

Vaiko said the UPA government had provided 'logistic military support' to Sri Lanka in the last leg of civil war between that army and rebel LTTE which witnessed heavy Tamil civilian casualty.

The NDA regime headed by A B Vajpayee had taken the 'commendable decision' of not providing any military support to Sri Lanka, he said, adding, there were reports that India was now planning to impart military training to Sri Lankan personnel in the country.

Vaiko recalled Tamil Nadu Assembly's adoption of unanimous resolution to impose economic sanctions against Sri Lanka.

"But, adding insult to the injury, news have appeared that commercial and economic relationship between the two countries (are) to be enhanced and one of the largest apparel companies of Sri Lanka is going to invest one billion US dollars in SEZ at Visakhapatnam," he said in the letter. :P

Situation of Tamils in north and eastern Sri Lanka was 'worsening' as the army had taken control of civilian areas which were being turned into Sinhala settlements even as Tamil men and women were facing many other difficulties, he said.

"With all sincerity and good intention, I have placed this representation for your kind consideration and I would request you to take appropriate steps to erase the tears of Tamils," he said.

This is when Srilanka is letting Pakistanis to use their territory to launch terror strikes in South India. How much is India going to bend to please them when they care the least for India's interests??

India need to keep forcing Srilankans to work for the betterment of Sri lankan Tamils and also fishermen issue.

Don't worry one more incident of terrorists using your soil to attack India and you will see the opinions changing. It's not worth wasting time on some one who is not even willing to oblige back. You know very well a change in stance of India can go on to hurt you for another 30 years so you better change your stance and stop terrorists from attacking India from your country. Not a big ask for the kind of support you are getting from India. It's the only valid conclusion and not based on some whims and fancies as you concluded.

bad decision.. the international community want justice but Indian govt is creating roadblocks for short term gain.

Good decision by India to alienate Tamils and Tamilnadu

India never considered Dravidian Tamilnadu/Tamils as Indians, they are seen as aliens but not the Aryan Sinhala Buddhist who in the eyes of Hindutva ideologists are Indians.

Time for Tamilnadu to be freed from Hindian Aryan occupation

So who is this "international" community ? The US and Europe ? Go check the votes at the UNHRC resolution and you will see a clear definition.. Btw throwing stones from glass houses is not a good idea.. Good thing the Indian govt know this irrespective which party is in power

Distinguished BJP panel discussion at BMICH on ‘India under Modi’

The Island

The Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies (BCIS) has invited five distinguished persons from the BJP, led by Dr. Subramanian Swamy to a panel discussion on "India under Modi: Relevance for the Region and the World" on Monday 21st July 2014 at Committee Room B of the BMICH from 05:00 p.m. - 07:30 p.m.

This is in continuance of a high powered delegation that visited Sri Lanka in 2013 led by Ravi Shankar Prasad, who is now a Minister in the BJP-led Modi government, as a precursor to the ascendency of the BJP in India.

The panel discussion is open to the public.

The panel discussion is intended to answer many questions on India under the leadership of Modi, his ability to prove that he is better equipped than his predecessor to solve the myriad of issues blighting India’s economy and the choices he makes in combating corruption and terrorism, while the region and the world will watch for the new Prime Minister to send the right signals about his new style of governance and the promise of fast-tracking economic growth will augur well for the rest of the world.

All five panellists invited by the BCIS are prominent stakeholders of the Modi government. Dr. Swamy heads the Committee on Strategic Action of the BJP and was also a Union Minister and is known for his forthright remarks on many internal and international political issues. Dr. Seshadri Chari, National Convenor, Foreign Policy Cell of the BJP, Dr. Suresh Prabhu, former Union Minister, Dr. Swapan Dasgupta, Senior Journalist and Political Commentator and Prof. Madhav Nalapat, Professor of Geopolitics at Manipal University, have an experienced and responsible understanding of the BJP and Modi in particular.

Both sides blame each other, the area is so small that identification has become a problem
And fisherman from both sides are arrested

i would wait and watch, modi doesnt play his cards at once

international communities who do not have any direct or indirect interests in SL... We cant keep on adding enemies around us, it was the same international commuity who had influenced India's support to Myanmaar causing China to took away the energy deal!

.
I want my fellow Indians who opposes the govt policy towards Srilanka to please suggest ,what benefit will India or srilankan Tamils will get by non cordial relation between the two neighbours ,as we also have to keep in mind that Srilanka doesn't survive on donations and their are some big powers who are very eager to become their partner.

I asked a very simple and a practical question. That is how are you going to work for the betterment of SL tamils while stealing their fish. That is very simple qn any idiot can comprehend.

The saying that identification is a problem is a lie. TN fishermen DELIBERATELY cross borders and fish in SL side that is visible from SL shores. TN fishermen knows very well where the borders are and they even wave at indian coast guards who come to stop them because inidan coast guards cant chase TN fishermen when the thieves enter SL side
