India abruptly puts off border talks with China

Amid China row, president, PM skip global Buddhist meet

NEW DELHI: With China upping the ante over the Dalai Lama issue, President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh skipped the four-day Global Buddhist Conference that began on Sunday with the chanting of prayers to mark the 2,600th year of Buddha's enlightenment.

Patil, who was invited by Asoka Mission, the organizers, to inaugurate the conference, opted out of it as China strongly objected to the Dalai Lama's valedictory address at the conference November 30.

A week ago, the president's office called the organisers to tell them it may not be possible for her to attend the function, a well-placed source told IANS.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, too, was invited by Asoka Mission as guest of honour, but is understood to stayed away due to Chinese sensitivities.

Instead Sikkim Governor Balmiki Prasad Singh presided over the function and Karan Singh, an eminent scholar and president of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), was guest of honour at the conference.

Around 1,000 Buddhist scholars, thinkers and followers from over 30 countries assembled at convention hall in Ashoka Hotel on day one of the conference.

A 40-strong contingent of Chinese scholars was expected, but with Beijing taking objection to the Dalai Lama's valedictory address, only 7-8 Chinese Buddhist scholars have managed to come, Ashok K. Wangdi, a member of the organizing committee of the conference, told IANS.

Despite Chinese objections, India has refused to cave in. The Dalai Lama, the exiled Tibetan spiritual leader who made India his home over five decades ago, will come to Delhi Nov 30 for the valedictitory address.

When India conveyed to China its oft-reiterated position that the Dalai Lama was a spiritual leader and an honored guest and was, therefore, free to speak on spiritual matters, Beijing hardened its stand and is said to have demanded the cancellation of the conference.

India, however, stuck to its position, leading to the postponement of boundary talks between special representatives of the two countries in New Delhi which coincided with the Buddhist conference.

"It's unfortunate, this attempt to give a political colour to a religious functio"," said Tempa Tsering, Dalai Lama's chief representative in New Delhi.

The Asoka Mission has strongly objected to the politicization of the event.

"The overriding theme of the conference is to commemorate the 2,600th year of Buddha's enlightenment. The conference aims at evolving a collective Buddhist response to pressing global challenges like climate change, violence and pressures of modern living," said Wangdi.

"It is first and foremost a religious event. We are very upset by China's attempt to politcise it," he said.

Lol.. which Pakistan? some parts of it to be exact.... while sikhs were ruled by our people for 1000 years... we literally OWNED you folks..lol

You seriously need a lesson in history classes. Sikh dharma started around in 17th century which is less than 4 centuries back. Where the hell did 1,000 years rule come from? Owned! what a joke. But keep gratifying yourself with that stupid myth as it further sinks you into a pit of quicksand.

We have to do is just sit and watch as you sink. :P

@abhishek.. still 76% Pakistanis favour khilafat..lol

But KHilafat was dead more than 6 decades ago. Favoring it won't do any good as neither there's any Ottoman empire today nor there's going to be one as each country is interested in driving its interests more due to limited resources compared to centuries ago. If you realize this reality good for you, if you don't you only will continue to suffer.

now if you have blood of your mother in your veins then prove you ruled indian side punjab for 1000 years. punjab is not bengal or UP. even at the time of mugals sikh misls ruled this part. sikh religion itself is not older than 500 years

The formal start of the Sikh Empire began with the merger of these "Misls" by the time of coronation of Ranjit Singh , creating a unified political state. All the Misl leaders, who were affiliated with the army, were nobility with usually long and prestigious family histories in Sikhs' history.[1][12] The main geographical footprint of the empire was the Punjab region and the empire extend into the Khyber Pass in the west, NWFP to Kashmir in the north, to Sindh in the south, and Tibet in the east. The religious demography of the Sikh Empire was Muslim (80%), Sikh (10%), Hindu (10%).[13] Gujranwala served as his capital from 1799. In 1802, he shifted his capital to Lahore and Amritsar.

Now that MMS has prostrated himself in front of China, we know that our mocking of india was effective:

Why India appears so impatient to take more agreeable strategies in its periphery is still beyond understanding. But one thing is certain: Today's India, no matter how anxious it intends to lead the region and even the world, is far from potent and prosperous to act of its own accord----By currying favor with China's neighbor, in particular, those who have brewed disputes with China, India would assume, it could instigate these smaller nations to engage in a gang fight against China and contain China's growing clout in the region.

And we know now you are afraid of our army

Attack on Pak will be attack on China: report - Indian Express
Hypocrisy at its height.

We already stopped your PM and President from seeing Dalai Lama. We can directly control indian government actions! Your PM and Presient prostrated to us already.

By doing what? These two idiots attend it or not doesn't say in the protocol. The point is we are still holding the event and there's nothing you can do about it. Keep your dictates to your lackeys around the neighborhood. Try that with us and you will only get egg-smeared all over the face.

I think China needs to teach Indians a lesson 50 years is a long time and indians have forgotton their place in the neighbourhood

Who are they?lol

Greeks who fought them King Porus!
Ancient persians= muslims same people.
Central asians? which ones? mughals? they were muslim so were we!
Sikhs?lol 30 years and tht too after the weakening of muslim empire and then they were thrown out with their baggage.
Hindu rulers?lol which one my lord?
arabs? never ruled Pakistan.
Turks? kingdoms capital was delhi... and again muslim.
British? they ruled for 50 years..and never came to the region.. it was ruled by local kings, nawabs, chieftains who paid tribute to the british.... while modern day india was under them for 200 years.

For starters as you mentioned the name of King Porus , he was Hindu .Alright .

Okay, have heard the name of Chandragupta Morya, his son Bindusara, grandson Ashoka(he later on adopted Buddhist philosophy), Samudragupta , Raja Dahir to last Hindu shahi king Jayapala ,they were all hindus and they all ruled parts or whole whats called Pakistan today.

I wonder what kind of history they teach in Pakistan.

they dont teach history in Pakistan, all they teach is we are anti India, they tell common pakistani that modern Pakistani belong to the invading armies of great looters, not that these looters converted modern pakistani to Muslim coz otherwise they would have raped and killed every single modern pakistani :) poor fellows...

they should keep in mind only for 100-200 years mughals were ruling a good part of India... for rest..

Rajputana,Southern Indian States and Maratha Empire, Sikh Empire were from time to time ruling major part of India... but I dont think they will ever teach the true history to them

Umm...the Dalai Lama is still hosted in India, so things like this incident doesn't matter much. India as such have been defying Chimna for last 50 years.
