There is a good chance the whole deal to buy M-777 might blow up in the face of the MoD.
The initial deal offered by the Pentagon was 145 Guns for 647 million $. This was translated into INR based on the then price of USD to the Rupee which was Rs 45.86. That is how the figure of Rs. 2,900 crores was arrived at.
But at today's price, 647 million $ is equal to Rs. 4,100 Crores.
So when this goes to the Finance Ministry for clearance, it is likely to be Rejected since its 30% higher cost and we end up back in square one.
This will only move forward if BAE offers a reduced price since it has wound up production of M-777.
Members of the DAC are Minister of State of Defence, the Defence Secretary, the Chiefs of the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. The Secretary, Defence Production, the Financial Adviser, and the Special Secretary (acquisition).
So the question will be, who screwed up ? Parrikar will end up taking the blame.
