In cyberspace, Taseer speaks for Kalabagh Dam

ISLAMABAD: At a time when most parts of the country are inundated with floods, a top Pakistan People’s Party leader has spoken his heart out on his Twitter account, expressing the necessity of Kalabagh Dam.

Governor Punjab, Salman Taseer who unlike Pakistani politicians uses Twitter frequently, wrote on his wall: “Kalabagh Dam would have helped prevent flooding”. Taseer who tweets on almost every important event in the world regarding Pakistan could not stop himself from speaking about the necessity of Kalabagh dam, the project dumped by his own party to avoid any criticism in its political stronghold, Sindh.

The country’s many cities and villages have been flooded due to recent monsoon rains and the water released by India in River Chinab, the media has been reporting every event of flooding and the governor spoke to some 2710 people who follow him on twitter.

Governor Salman Taseer is among those politicians whose blatant criticism of PML-N has caused panic among the N-League’s politicians and he continues to criticise PML-N on Twitter as well. Out of his ten tweets, he discusses the ‘governance style’ of Sharif brothers in almost six of his comments, full of satire and making fun of the Sharif brothers.

Taseer follows twenty-eight people including Interior Minister Senator Rehman Malik, Marvi Memon of PML-Q, Asifa Bhutto Zardari and Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari. It is worth mentioning here that in recent days the PPP politicians have been severely criticising the Kalabagh Dam in both houses of Parliament and even on June 18, 2010 raised slogans of “Kalabagh Dam not acceptable” in the upper house when Senator Tariq Azeem of PML-Q called for developing consensus on the construction of water reservoir and the proceeding of the house had to be suspended for half an hour.

Experts believe that the energy crisis could not be resolved unless Kalabagh Dam was constructed. Rivers, glaciers and natural resources in the country are not being utilised in the best possible way and the construction of Kalabagh Dam and Bhasha Dam would ensure the best utilisation of these natural resources, experts maintain.

Dams built for flood control, irrigation and power generation.I dont know when our stupid politicians and miltery dictators understand it?????

Kalabag Dam feasibility was ready in 1990 .Banazir,Nawaz and Musharaf and Zardari and Gillani are all responsible for national loses and 1100 deaths due to floods in K PustoonKhawa

First time on his side.

- As per ex-IRSA chairman Fatehullah Gandapur (1993-1998), Kalabagh dam was not flood control project (design-wise). This he stated in his rejoinder to PM Gillani who claimed KBD would have averted devastation of flood. PM tried to misguide the people like controversial Salman Taseer, Punjab Governor (PM and Governor both are from Punjab).

Recently flood came in China, Nigeria and Russia. In China only , 11 million people became displaced despite having dams in China. but why??

- For God sake do not try to misguide the people for the vested interests of Punjab.

- How KBD had stored flood water whereas one out of three spate was 100MAF and KBD capacity was only 6.1 MAF despite dams in Pakistan are traditionally filled BEFORE monsoon season.

- So PM and Punjab Governor both wanted to store total 300 MAF water of flood in KBD with minimum capacity of only 6.1 MAF What a joke.

- Why 11 million people in China displaced due to flood despite having dams.

- Plz do not misguide the people as heavy floods come in USA, Europe and Asia despite having dams.

Please make your position clear - Why is KBD a bad idea -- and first a caveat, please don't go around making ethnic, linguistic or provincial arguments, you will lose before you even start to make your case -- must make your best technical argument, please.

Dear Brother,
Any one of your love one's is victim of recent Flood ?
If No, then we are.
Kalabagh dam was not flood control project
as you said,
when the side bank of sindh river flush out near "Diara Din Pnah (Band Abbas Wala)" we suffered badly, still my loveone's are in camps, why , because this flood,
our theory is this, although as you said, this is not the flood control project,
inspite of this we can hold a larg quantity of water for some time, or release the water slowly, which can help to reduce the pressure on side banks.
My dear brother, we think about every possible way , how can we protect ourself by this flood,
AND ONE REASON IS THAT "KALA BAGH DAM"
Some peoples are not in the favor of kala bagh dam, but after the flood,
101% we are now.
