In A Jolt To OBOR, Pakistan Rejects China Dam Aid

A Chinese expert, based in Beijing, said that Pakistan would not be able to take the risk of rejecting Beijing’s offer as the CPEC’s ambitious project would not be insulated.

The above statement can be described as "Blackmail" or "Putting all eggs in one basket". Take your pick. Chinese are not as benevolent as Pakistanis here think they are to be. The relationship is mostly one sided.

.
sensationalist rubbish for domestic consumption of the lowest ebb of the country.

Pakistan again and again asked china to allocate massive funds for this dam however china has its own interests and they asked for a price too high ( security and to combat off indian pressure) which we could not pay and we refused the offer and decided to do it ourselves. In a mature world this is not a jolt but in the minds of single digit indian jolts, its waves reach jupiter.

.
According to OP China wanted Pakistan to mortgage any existing project, but considering Pakistan has already mortgaged National assets I doubt this could be the only reason why Pakistan rejected this offer.

This is definitely a jolt for pakistan who wasted years not building a dam, and when heard the final bill, backed off. Not surprising considering 14 billion is just too much for any developing country.

Are you kidding me?!

Solar can not replace coal as of now. For mass production of unbroken electricity supply..you need either coal/gas, hydro, or nuclear energy. There is just no other alternative as of yet.

Even a child knows this..

I love solar power but it is not without constraints. It requires full sunlight for 80-90% energy production, on top of it all it cannot be relied upon completely in winter and in our fifth season SMOG. For example a shortfall of 7000MW happened due to smog bcz many solar power plants both private and govt shut down creating a deficiency that needed to be solved by restarting the coal power plants....

.
Its n jolt or nething.pakistan is looking after its intrest...thats good.
Only problem with cpec power projects is ...most of them are coal based...there is so much smog problem in delhi and lahore too.

Plz can someone tell me y coal power plants and not solar...china is worlds largest and cheapest manufacture of solar panels.

Actually of the 21;

- 8 are coal
- 4 are hydro
- 1 is solar
- 6 are wind based
- 2 are tranmission projects, not power generation.

Short term coal is a blessing - long term we will regret it. We don't have the kind of leadership who will put in plans to reduce the reliance on coal and replace it with other sorts of energy. We don't even have plans to use green methods to use coal, like Denmark.

14 billion is too much for many countries. Even for China to invest in a single project such a huge amount would require securities.

Yes. We wasted a long time. Even the last couple of years of flip flopping were a complete waste. We heard the bill and we immediately back tracked from self finance which was the initial goal towards making it into CPEC.

I quite frankly support this move. We look after our interest and we generate the resources for such a large project through self finance. The thing is, it has to be done one day. We cannot keep running around for high cost necessary projects. We need to create an air of confidence of self finance resource generation so that we can undertake such projects in the future.

Fact is that this project is needed for Pakistan. We are desperate for dams and this giant is the need of the hour.

Majority of the land has already been allocated and acquisitions have happened as well. Its time to bring in the initial construction.

You have to first have the infrastructure before you can think about anything else.
Smart consumption of energy will lead to greener alternatives.
Coal/Gas based projects are for the industry while the renewable energy is meant for the population center.
As much as i like Pakistanis to be a koala hugging tree creatures but we cannot afford that right now.
Carbon footprint by Pakistani is irrelevant compared to big industrial countries.
This climate crap is for societies who want to reduce their crude oil dependence.

That is blunt blackmailing ...good luck with CPEC

.
How much coal based? and compare it with your or other countries. This season we are paying heavily for your environmental blunders.
Wecome to mud slinging contest.
U did not get what i was asking.
Its not ur country or my country...its abt enviornment...my leaders were idiots to come with coal power...but china is a leader in solar panels..
If u have something to contribute i have all ears..

It's not the Koala's you have to worry about - it's the air in your own lungs. Look at the mess the smog caused recently, that will become a daily matter in our cities and towns if we are not careful.

Don't look at this from the perspective of carbon foot print and other statistics, we need to look at it from a quality of life perspective. Already in Pakistan the air is full of disease, waste management is absence and the ground water in most places is unfit to drink. We are blessed in AJK that we are still in the stone age and industrialisation has not had the chance to do that to us yet.

CPEC is a MAJOR industrialisation of Pakistan, if we bypass green regulation and environmental protection, we'll ruin the country for the next generations. A balance must be struck. We need energy right now - but once we have it, we should look to replace it with clean methods as soon as it is possible.

when we are that capable we will do that as well. this is just fear mongering and i believe the climate regulations are voluntary and only recommendations not directives.

What you propose or take inspiration from is how the European model works. That is not for Pakistan neither it will work here

It's not fear mongering - it's raising real concerns. Currently we have next to no industrialisation and our environment is disgusting. Would you drink the tap water in any of our big cities? Just because standards are currently low, doesn't mean they should have to continue to be. Policy making should be proactive, not reactive. Why is clean water and air "not for Pakistan"? What sin did Pakistani's commit to not deserve that. Just across the border in some cities 50% of lung cancer patients are non smokers - they're getting it from the pollution. We could end up there too if we don't make the right decisions.

We should not wait for it all to go to pot and then do dharnas asking for change, we should lobby and protest and raise concerns at all levels of society immediately, to make the environment into a political issue to make sure there is awareness and concern for these things when industrialisation takes place.

We would be fools not to learn from the mistakes of others.

.
Indians back is burning like always. 20 Project is running at the moment and if one project is rejected for whatever reason. They forgot all those 20 project and start poiniting at a single project. Best case of need of burnol.

be my guest.... go find a political party to take your concerns to the parliament.

without educational reforms you will have a hard time explaining that to the people.

i have worked in a cement production company so you can spare me the lung cancer jabs and i am a smoker myself.

death is taken philosophically in Pakistan
