Israel used its Arrow-3 missile defense system for the first time on Thursday night after Israeli jets were targeted with Syrian anti-aircraft missiles during an operation over the war-torn country.

In a rare confirmation of Israel carrying out airstrikes in Syria, the IDF said on Friday morning that “several anti-aircraft missiles were launched from Syria during the operation. One of the missiles was intercepted by the air defense systems of the IDF.”

As a result of these activities a rocket alert siren was heard in Aravot HaYarden Regional Council in Israel's Jordan Valley, the army statement added.

In January, the Israel Air Force officially took delivery of the first Arrow-3 interceptor. Produced by IAI, the Arrow 3 forms the uppermost layer of Israel’s multilayered defense system along with the Arrow 2, David’s Sling and Iron Dome system.

The Arrow 3 is highly maneuverable system designed to provide ultimate air defense by intercepting ballistic missiles when they are still outside the Earth’s atmosphere and is considered one of the world's best interceptors due to its breakthrough technological capabilities.

A Reuters witness in the central Israeli city of Modiin reported hearing an explosion and a more distant bang was heard from as far away as Jerusalem.

Israeli journalists have posted photos and video of the wreckage of the anti-aircraft missile:

The border with Syria has been tense since Syria's civil war erupted in 2011, and while Israel is suspected of carrying out strikes against Hezbollah weapons convoys in Syrian territory, it rarely publicly admits to them.

Palestinian militants in Gaza have often fired short-range rockets over the border with Israel and, in the 2014 Gaza war, had fired longer-range rockets that landed deep inside Israel and in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Militants affiliated with the Islamic State group in the Egyptian Sinai peninsula have also fired rockets into Israel on occasion.

JERUSALEM - The Israeli military said on Friday none of its aircraft were damaged in an overnight operation in Syria, after the Syrian army said it had shot down an Israeli jet.

Israel confirmed earlier on Friday that anti-aircraft missiles targeted its aircraft while on a mission in Syria.

"At no point was the safety of Israeli civilians or the IAF (Israeli Air Force) aircraft compromised," an Israeli military spokesman said.

Syria's army high command said in a statement on Friday that Israeli jets breached Syrian air space early in the morning and attacked a military target near Palmyra in what it described as an act of aggression that aided Islamic State.

It said its air defenses shot down one of the Israeli jets over what it called "occupied ground" and damaged another.

Syrian Air Defense Shoots Down Intruder Israeli Warplane, Hits Another One

11:27 17.03.2017(updated 12:27 17.03.2017)

The Syrian air defense shot down an Israeli warplane and hit another one after four aircraft had breached the war-torn country's airspace and attacked government troops near Palmyra, the Syrian Army said on Friday.

"Our anti-aircraft systems reacted and shot down one of the planes in the occupied territories. Another plane was also hit, the rest flew away," the army command said in a statement obtained by Sputnik.

The Syrian Army claimed the Israeli Air Force had targeted government troops near Palmyra.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli military told Sputnik that its combat planes were targeted by missiles after they had attacked targets in Syria. However, the incident allegedly did not result in any damages or casualties on the Israeli side, according to the source.

According to Israeli Channel 10, Israeli planes were targeted by the Syrian government forces using S-200 surface-to-air missile systems, also known as SA-5.

After the statement by the Syrian Army, Israeli military reiterated that that none of its planes had been damaged.

Last month, it was reported that Israeli military aircraft conducted an airstrike on the Syrian government forces stationed in the western countryside of Damascus near the Lebanese border.

In January, Israel bombed a military airport near Damacus. A Syrian official told Sputnik that it was done "to encourage and support terrorists". Damascus vowed repercussions.

In December, Syria allegedly downed an Israeli warplane and an unmanned aerial vehicle over the southwestern province of Quneitra. The IDF denied these claims.

In November, the IDF said a missile believed to be launched from Syria, hit the Israeli-controlled Northern Golan Heights without resulting in any casualties. The IDF responded with retaliatory fire.

The civil war in Syria has been lasting for around six years with government troops fighting against numerous opposition factions and terror organizations such as al-Nusra Front and Daesh, outlawed in Russia.

The nationwide Syrian ceasefire regime was introduced on December 30, 2016. Terrorist organizations are not part of the ceasefire.

It appears that Israel's breach of Syrian air territory has been strongly sanctioned by the Syrian defence units this time. Hopefully, Israel will not escalate the situation further.

like the clown Israelis who once a while shot down a Hizbollah drone but never show the wreckage.

Israel army has admitted that Syrian missiles has followed your planes into Israel territory, so it's Israel who should prove that its missile has intercepted the Syrian missile, specially considering the fact that explosion sound has been heard inside the Israel.

in previous incidents, Israel army preferred to remain silent, but this time they opened their mouth even before the Syrian, which is another proof that they wanted to cover their humiliation.
