New Delhi: For the first time in the history of India, contingent of any foreign country's army will take part in this year's Republic Day Parade . Reports say that a strong contingent of French Army, which is already in India for a joint military exercise, will take part in the parade along with Indian Armed forces.

This year French President Francois Hollande will be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations. His visit is expected to further strengthen the robust strategic partnership between the two countries.

This will be the fifth time that a French leader will be a Chief Guest at India’s Republic Day celebrations — the maximum number from any country so far. Earlier leaders from that country had presided in 1976, 1980, 1998 and 2008.

Bhutan has presided four times so far in 1954, 1984, 2005 and 2013. Significantly, France was the first country with which India established a Strategic Partnership in 1998 after New Delhi did nuclear tests.

France is also the first country with which India entered into a civil nuclear energy cooperation in 2008 after obtaining the NSG waiver.

NEW DELHI, Jan 8: In a first, French soldiers will march down the Rajpath on Republic Day along with Indian troops in the presence of President Francois Hollande who is the chief guest for this year’s celebrations.
Government sources said that a contingent of French soldiers would be participating in the Republic Day celebrations.
This is a first time when a foreign army would be marching down the Rajpath along with Indian troops as part of the Republic Day celebrations.
Incidentally, a French contingent comprising 56 personnel of 35th Infantry Regiment of 7th Armoured Brigade is already in the country to take part in a joint exercise which began in Rajasthan today.
Some soldiers will also fly down from France to form a proper marching contingent, the sources said. (AGENCIES)

From Wikipedia

In 2009 Bastille Day Parade, the parade opened with a contingent of Indian troops drawn from the three services (Indian Army, Indian Navy & Indian Air Force.[10] President Nicolas Sarkozy invited Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, to attend the event as the guest of honour. Soldiers including Jawans of Maratha Light Infantry[11] Regiment Centre (MLIRC) marched down the Champs Elysees to the sound of an Indian military band playing Indian martial tunes including Saare Jahan Se Achcha, Haste Lushai and Kadam Kadam Badaye Ja.[12]

Out of the blue ?

Something behind the scene going on.This is a big big scenario.

India French relationship is going strongly.. Our Military cooperation is getting better with every day.. Good to see this development

Now we need Rafales under Make In India, more scorpenes and perhaps Barracuda short fin subs and may be nuclear reactors cooperation (civilian and for subs)

This will further strengthen the multidimensional bilateral relationship between France and Republic of India.Today French troops landed in Rajasthan where they will carry out an 8 day exercises with Indian army aimed at improving interoperability of the two while combating non symmetric modern warfare. Also The French President Francois Hollande will be the chief guest for the Republic day celebrations.

@PARIKRAMA can you tag all the French members here.

Is this for real?

India has never allowed any other country's military to participate in the Republic Day parade.

And France? That means that PM of India and President of France are investing personally in the relationship between the two countries.

@PARIKRAMA There's also Vortex although not active of late or I just missed him.

Actually, India came to Bastille Day under Singh and Sarkozy! So, you know, it must go further
than personal relations of those in office. We do share an ocean of concerns too? ( Indian Ocean ) 8-)

As SrNair mentioned, the friendship does exist. In fact, I find it understated with lots of room to grow.
But that's for a more general strategic alliances thread, ideally!
In particular however, the Rafale deal has the potential ( numbers will grow as 36 is clearly not enough )
to further this into the future.

Thanks for the news, Ankit K and for the tag, Parik and great day all, Tay.

Should be made a norm for every year republic day parade. Whichever country's leader is the guest so is that country's contingent in the parade. Gives more PR value in here and abroad.

As for the Rafales; look at 72 as the minimum cut-off numbers. That can rise further depending on sorting out manufacture of the birds in India as well as the direction that 5th Gen aircraft acquisition program will take.

After India's nuclear test, France was the only western power which didn't criticize it or imposed sanctions on India. (Of course apart from Russia)
