ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan on Thursday said his being taken off at the Toronto airport by the US officials was an insult to Pakistan and questioned the governments silence on the issue.
Talking to media persons after his week-long visit, the PTI chief noted the silence of the government over stopping the leader of a large Pakistani party was regrettable and indicative of the fact that it wanted the US drone strikes to continue harming Pakistan.
After coming to power, the PTI will not let this kind of treatment to the citizens of Pakistan. Raymond Davis like killer is handed over to the US with honour while no government official, even the Pakistani ambassador, condemned my stoppage by the US officials, he maintained. He said if he had done anything wrong, the US State Department could have explained it.
He said the PTIs stance on the drone attacks was based on principles that these attacks were a sheer violation of the international laws and human rights, which killed innocent men, women and children. He said no law allows killing of innocent people. Imran recalled that a similar incident had happened with Maulana Fazlur Rehman and despite differences with him, the PTI had strongly condemned the incident.
About intra-party election, the PTI chief said these would be held and the process would be completed before the general election. Imran conceded that they faced some problems since the process was huge.
Meanwhile, the office of the Central Election Commission (CEC) of PTI said in view of a large number of complaints received by the election office regarding serious technical flaws in the electoral lists for the intra-party election in Islamabad, a committee was constituted by the chairman of the CEC to look into the matter on an urgent basis.
In a series of meetings held during the last two days, and in consultation with all stakeholders, the committee took stock of the nature and extent of objections to the electoral lists and found some of them to be sound and pertinent which needed to be looked into.
It also felt that if PTI proceeded to hold the election in Islamabad on the basis of these electoral lists, its fairness and transparency would be rendered suspect. The committee, therefore, decided to postpone the process in Islamabad scheduled for November 2 by a few days pending rectification of flaws as pointed out in the complaints. The new date for election in Islamabad will be announced after the CEC meeting scheduled for November 5.
The statement said the decision had been taken to ensure that the election is held in a fair, free and transparent manner and the sanctity of the election process is not questioned.
