It is in tough times that a nation's mettle is tested and we have not faced such challenges since 1971. Besides the rigours of war that our brave soldiers are fighting with grit and determination, we face a huge humanitarian crisis.

The government may be lagging behind in its relief effort but the ordinary people are coming through. From impromptu relief camps to truckloads of supplies from citizen groups, and an overwhelming urge to give cash, there is a visible anguish for the displaced people of Malakand.

Unfortunately, the state machinery is not moving as quickly. An announcement on behalf of the prime minister that all banks would receive donations has not been followed through. Until Thursday morning, even some of the more prominent Pakistani banks had not received instructions to open PM's relief account.

Incidentally, is it too much to ask that there be some coordination of the appeals for donations made by various government entities? If advertisements in the papers are any guide, at least four separate calls have been made and there may be as many as six.

There is the Prime Minister's fund and of the NWFP government. In Punjab, the governor and the chief minister have made separate appeals. (Why?). I am not aware of it but Sindh and Baluchistan governments may have also done something similar.

Is it impossible to have just one fund? If there were, it would be easier for people to give and for the banks to manage. But, then this would be asking our leadership to display some hidden executive talent. Let us face it; these people are good politicians but management is not one of their virtues.

On the battle field, our armed forces seem to be doing well. I am no military expert but they appear to be going about their task unhurriedly and with great care. Fighting insurgencies is not easy as it is not the conventional warfare armies are trained for. But, whatever evidence we have, of this and the earlier Bajaur operation, our armed forces are adapting and beginning to win.

On the political front, it is sad that even when we are in a virtual state of war, there are discordant voices. Some PML-N members continue to make speeches against the operation and against the army in the National Assembly. This is unhelpful considering that the both Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif have taken an unequivocal stand against the terrorists. Maybe these members should check with their leadership before holding forth.

However, no one has been more disappointing in this regard than Imran Khan. I have great respect for what he has achieved on the cricket field. He was an inspirational captain, a great player and his integrity was beyond doubt. His disdain for money in particular was something to admire in an era of match fixing and other shenanigans.

In social work, what he has accomplished in the shape of Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital is truly stupendous. Not only is it the best-run hospital in Pakistan, it provides free medical treatment to thousands of poor patients. What is more, the lack of any VIP culture in hospital management is a personal tribute to the vision and leadership of Imran Khan.

When it comes to politics and policy though, the same Imran is unfortunately a signal failure. It can be truly said of him that he never misses an opportunity to miss an opportunity. He could have teamed up with Nawaz Sharif in 1997 and got his party a presence in parliament. He did not.

He flip-flopped with Musharraf -- supporting him in the rigged referendum, opposing him in the ensuing general election -- and got the worst of both worlds. And, he boycotted the 2007 election when being in parliament (provided he won) would have made a great deal more sense.

These examples are of power politics and it may be argued that parliamentary success or power are no measure of a person's success as a politician. Fine, let us look at his policy prescriptions.

From the start of his political career, he railed against something called western culture, which was a straight forward rejection of modernisation. In a country that was being pulled back by obscurantist mullahs, this was a strange choosing of sides. I will not even go into the personal choices he made while doing this.

His second fixation was the idealisation of a Pakhtun tribal culture. Again, I will avoid psychoanalysing a Punjabi's identity crisis, but how a semi-literate and simple rural people could become a role model for a rapidly urbanising and complex Pakistani society was not easy to understand.

Granted that their inter-tribal dealings were egalitarian and perhaps the tribal councils or jirgas worked well, but how this model could be transplanted in other parts of the country, was neither explained by Imran nor obvious.

In between, he took some correct positions on the judiciary question and against Musharraf but badly fumbled while trying to prosecute Altaf Hussain in England. A politician should know which battles can be won and which are a lost cause. Imran vowed to go after Altaf Hussain in England and declared victory even before he had presented his case before the British government. As was expected, nothing has happened despite his various entreaties to the high and mighty in that country.

But, all these mistakes pale in comparison when measured up against his obsessive, single track refusal to understand that these barbarian hordes targeting FATA and Malakand division are a threat to our country. He has just one mantra that this is America's fault, America's fault, America… etc. America has contributed to it but is that the only problem we confront?

He cannot or does not want to understand that these people are linked up with Al Qaeda and actually do have an agenda of taking over our country. If he does not want to believe a 'westernised liberal' like me, he should read Saleem Saafi in Jang or others that know these people well.

In any case, how can he condone what these people are doing? Cutting people's throats, lashing women, destroying all schools not just girls', indulging in kidnapping and extortion and unleashing a reign of terror to subdue the people, are just some of their crimes. Above all, these people have taken up arms against the state. Why can't he see all this?

He should listen to the stories of the displaced people now that they are out of the Taliban fear zone. They describe the Taliban as bloody thirsty criminals. It is sad that Imran visualises them as some kind of higher beings or fighters of Islam responding to American presence in Afghanistan. Please!

In this difficult time for the country, he is on the wrong side of history. No one doubts that American presence in Afghanistan has seriously contributed to our troubles. There is also a possibility that the Americans may have an evil eye on our nuclear programme.

But, we must also remember that barbarian hordes linked to Al Qaeda also have designs on our country and threaten our way of life. We have no choice but to fight them.

Imran must stand by his people and the armed forces. He should rise above his prejudices and help in the fight for Pakistan.

So let me get it straight, now even criticising Imran is being racist, right?

Then how come all those Mqm bashing threads become perpetual here?

.
Its sad tht our ppl have become so used to corrupt and power hungry politicians who claim to be patriotic tht they now thk tht their way of rigged and so called democratic politics is the only way to do politics. This article is proof.:undecided:
IK is doing wat is right. His way of politics is better then any other so called leader ways. He has principles on which he wont compromise and i admire tht.
You might disagree on his policies but remember in true democracy the parliament decides policies not 1 man ,unlike wat is happening right now :usflag:and every1 has a right to his or her opinion.
1 more thing. He has made a hospital,a college and given us a world cup.
I have never seen zardari,Altaf Bhai,Bald Brothers, or musharraf lovers party do anything for the community. They only buy mercedes and other luxuries from our MONEY!!!
If IK can do this much for us without having power.I belief he can do great things if he gets the resources which our available to the govt.

.

I agree, Imran is one of very very few Pakistanis, we can proud of. Although he did some wrong things and may Allah forgive him but then no one is innocent. I can bet that you dig the past of any political leader weather religious or not , you will find "a lot" . But i am sure he is better than the rest of garbage in our politics who are the murderers, looters , corrupt etc.

.
Pakistan problems can fixed by one option only and that is DANDA!Ban all Ethnic Based Parties.Make more provinces and any party which try to exploit Ethnicity should be banned. Those who want Independent Mohajristan or Baluchistan or Pushtunistan should be killed.ISI should setup snipers for this work..period.This country cannot work without DANDA along with good economy then common people will never think about breaking up Pakistan.

At least he realized his actions! He became a big muslim and is a more devout muslim for me than many other ones who pretend to be like the MMA guys who in fact are all sold. We can be proud of, he says what we all think, he challenges our corrupt government, he is our hero!

dont u dare lie so openly about pashtuns i have lived in peshawar and my whole family is a nationalist family and they have never said anything about punjabis or mohajirs yes my family does not like MQM policies but we honestly dont care whos punjabi whos mohajir and noone there does we are all proud pakistanis.

If u have views like you do u can expect to be hated in every corner of our nation not just peshawar your openly talkin crap where the hell did u pull 50 percent out of are u with us on earth? there are racists everywhere that will include peshawar .

Your story is utter rubbish your holding a stupid bus driver responsible for ur ignorant and racist views how bout i hold all MQM people who have slaughtered innocent pakistanis responsible for my view of mohajirs

You seem proud of the violence in which many innocents seemed to die. Dont thump ur chest too hard pashtoons are a warrior race we could wreak havoc on karachi but why dont we because its part of our nation. Pashtoons have never been oppressed in any way we are having our elders slaughtered while we fight the taliban all MQM does is cause ethnic tensions.

If u went to peshawar with those views then im suprised they didnt tear u to bits because they are fiercely proud of being pakistani once again ill say all MQM does is stir up ethnic tensions people of peshawar marry into punjabi families i have 3 that i have in my family so dont crap about my city.

if u had done any research u would no that pashtoonwali allows the women to fight we have had women as our leaders long before benazir or any other pakistani party had it we fight and die for the honor of our women

i dont no how u have been bought up with so much hate but its not gonna last on this forum

I am a Punjabi and love all Pakistanis, no matter Pachtuns, Balochis or sth else. It is those different peoples who make me proud, brown skinned sindhis, green and blue eyed pachtuns, this is the mix which makes me proud.

Really and who willl hold this Danda people learn from the electoral process on who is best for the country if it can work in alot of countries it can work in ours as well we are just as human and just as capable Pakistanis that support IK do so because of the work he has done in his constituency he needs to set an example and ain his voter base not an approach of confrontational politics.

The present political system is a big farce. I dont know how many of you who are contributing to this thread know about this. You want to be an elected member or a politician , everything starts from corruption. Even the first step. All starts from 'THANA' & Police. One gets his own THANA, & if SP of his own choice, getting elected is an easy & money making process. No room for any fair & right person to grow. So people like IMRAN KHAN cannot fit through this process.
BTW- Can never understand what is MOHAJIR. Which most of the KARACHITES claim to be. If Mohajir stands for someone who migrated at the time of partition then at least half of PUNJAB are the same, but no one calls himself or herself Mohajir. Or Maybe its just a term limited for UPs & Biharis?

.
No one in karachi calls themselves mahahir, i also migrated from india, but i dont call mahajir mylself!
Neither MQM call themselves mahajir!
And mahajir is no ethinicity, mahajir means refugees,
The displaced people coming from swat to karachi are also mahajir!:enjoy:

.
Ok boys i guess we don't seem to have enough of Imran vs MQM or MQM vs ANP threads here....but ohh well i guess the MODs are pretty cool and are not warning anyone.....

ok so let's just put the record striaght.....

MOHAJIR in NWFP is a person who comes from AFGHANISTAN

URDU is a national Language and two of our countries presidents have been "MOHAJIRS" so MOHJAIRS can never ever claim that they are deprieved!!

Thirdly Imran Khan has no corruption cases or murder cases against him....which is not the case for most of our POLITICIANS....from PPP,MQM and so on....

For PATHANS their HONOUR & DIGNITY is everything...their women strictly do pardaa from strangers....yet currently in the IDP camps their HONOUR & DIGNITY is being tarnished because they have to share toilets as well as rooms with STRANGERS....

Imran is not wrong if he calls for a quick end to this war on TALIBAN...I think we should break the WAR WAGING CAPABILITES of the TALIBAN as swiftly as possible....so all the IDPs can return to their home as soon as possible.....thelonger they stay in camps the more chances of hatred BREWING amongst them against government,Pakistan....and could actually lead to a worse kind of crisis!!!

Imran Khan should appeal for a swift end for military operations....not a long dragging warfare!!!

Now coming to MQM.....MQM is building roads and everything in KARACHI....they are following NAIMTULLAHs lead....it is GOOD for karachi....however MQM needs to change its leadership to either FAROOQ SATTAR or MUSTAFA KAMAL....so that MOST of the pakistanis feel that fine forget the past atleast NOW MQM has a true PAKISTANI LEADER living in PAKISTANwith a PAKISTANI NATIONALITY.....MQM should come clean once and for all face all the allegations levelled against them just like

PML(N) is currently doing trying to come clean of the "HIJACKING CASE" once MQM recieves a clean sheet from the SUPREME COURT i guess most of the PAKISTANIS will finally burry the grudges they hold against MQM....

as for DANDA well for that i BLAME MUSHARRAF....he was the ARMY CHIEF,CEO,PRESIDENT of pakistan and yet he didn't use his DANDA to fix things once and for all......he started of well by talking about "ACCOUNTABILTY FROM THE GRASS ROOT LEVEL" but somewhere down the line lost his way....

PAKISTAN has 6 major ETHNIC groups and yet we quarrel like ENEMIES....and INDIA has god knows how many the REASON for success is that all those unite under ONE FLAG.....

people its time to unite and not POINT FINGERS at each other.....STAND UP AS PAKISTANIS...not as SINDHI,BALOCHI,PUNJABI,URDU SPEAKING(i hate the word mohajir),PATHAN,SARIKI

United we stand divided we fall!!!!
