1,Berlin Crisis(June 24,1948-May 12,1949)
After the WW2, both US and Soviet Union didn’t want to accept a united China(See today’s US attitude toward Taiwan). They hoped there are two separated Chinas. North China and South China bordered by Yangtze river. If that is the real case, China will forever lose its chance to become an independent big power. North China and South China would become vassal countries of Soviet Union and US. Fortunately Berlin Crisis drew all Soviet Union and US attention from China. CCP grasped this narrow window time. April 20, 1949, just 20 days before Berlin Crisis end, CCP’s army launched massive crossing Yangtze river campaign and reunified most China territory except Taiwan and Tibet. The two superpowers found it was too late to intervene China civil war when they moved their eyes to China again.
2, Korea war(1950-1953)
What China gained from engaging in Korea war: 1), Confidence and prestige that China never had before, since the Century Humiliation. 2), Soviet Union gave up its colony in China’s Lushun port and privileges in Northeast China. 3,Industrialization with help of Soviet Union.
China became a fully independent and preliminary industrial country.
3, Cuba Missile Crisis(October 15 - October 28, 1962)
October 20, 1962, China launched China-India border war when US and Soviet Union were busy in dealing with Cuba missile issue. China gained relative peace for 60 years in southwest direction.
4, Vietnam war (1955-1975)
Proxy war of China. China became a big player in the world. To end the war, US president for the first time visited China. Which paved the way for China joining in west market.
5, Cold war(1947-1991)
Right before Soviet Union collapsed, China became part of west economic chain. China started economic reform and opening up policy from 1978. If this policy was postponed for 10 years, US would not accept China cause all signs showed US was winning the cold war by then.
6, Afghanistan and Iraq wars( Early 21 century)
US eased containing-China strategy because of the anti-terrorism war. Allowed China to join in WTO. China became a business partner of US. The time of 2001 - 2018 is the golden time of China’s development. China became world factory and second largest economy.
Summary: China’s success is almost an impossible task. I can not deny China had very good lucks. But luck is always for those who get prepared for it. The CCP accomplished the impossible task because: 1), CCP is a strategy master. It grasped every chance, every window time offered by US and Soviet Union. Some of the chances are so important for China that there would be no today’s China if CCP hesitated or missed one of them. 2), CCP and Chinese are so good at achieving success in each short window time given them. Imagine if China lost one of wars it engaged in, or if China didn’t build a strong economy in the 18 years golden time and then US started trade war in 2018.
The difficulty of China’s rise is underestimated by the world.
