IMF WEO Database (April 2017): China and US grow most

No one cares what the Indian growth rate was in Rupees.

The Rupee is not an internationally acceptable currency. You can't buy anything with it (except for a very limited direct-swap government-to-government agreement).

The Indian Rupee is not a "hard currency."

Thus, it is irrelevant what the Indian growth was in Rupees. You can't buy Boeing airplanes or machine tools with Rupees.

In contrast, the US Dollar is the world's reserve currency. As a standard benchmark, nominal GDP has always been used to determine the relative size of different economies for countries.
----------

"Nominal GDP estimates are commonly used to determine the economic performance of a whole country or region, and to make international comparisons. Nominal GDP per capita does not, however, reflect differences in the cost of living and the inflation rates of the countries; therefore using a basis of GDP at purchasing power parity (PPP) is arguably more useful when comparing differences in living standards between nations."

Nominal GDP is the proper measure to compare the economies of different countries. PPP is probably the more accurate measure when comparing living standards. In this thread, I am clearly comparing the national economic strength of different countries. Thus, nominal GDP (which is set in US Dollars) is the proper measure.

Really?

I don't think you know about it, but we in India accept only Indian rupees when we buy/sell something. What other people do outside the country doesn't matter.

If Boeing ever makes planes in India, we will buy them with rupees as well.

Most of our economies have mundane items like Potatoes, Iron, Steel, Electricity, Education services, Health Services etc etc etc.

Import and Export account for much lesser portion of economy and they cancel out each other. In net the current account is only -1.1% of GDP (22 billion). I am not sure why we should discount all the domestic Economic activity for the sake of Boeing jets etc and in search of some dubious 'Strenght of Economy'

This is from wikipedia and I will suggest take knowledge from wikipedia with a metric ton of salt. Consult better places like IMF or Investopedia.

Supa Powans r obsessed with PPP.
GDP is a humiliation for them, a reflection of their incompetence, laziness and backwardness.

Tell them to buy our 2000 dollar DJI with their PPP money!

PPP is very useful domestically, so they can set their poverty line at Rs 26/32 (rural/urban) per day instead of $1.25, and effectively reduce the poverty. The money saved can be used on more important things like imported guns, howitzers and fighters.

PPP and SNA 2008.

Some countries do not miss any opportunity to feel good about their conditions without exerting too much effort.

What is better than comparing and contrasting national economy in a currency that is globally recognized as a (most common) reserve currency? To bring in PPP.

What is the best way to inflate GDP? To put in as many items as possible such as hidden or underground economy.

Although it makes sense to account for the entire economy, some countries quickly adopting it while some others do not create distortions.

Here is a picture of a US Dollar (see below). When I discuss a country's nominal GDP in US Dollars, everyone knows what I'm talking about.

Have you ever seen a picture of a hypothetical PPP dollar? I didn't think so. PPP is a purely abstract discussion that is not based in the real world. PPP dollars do not exist and you can't buy a single bottle of soda with PPP.

PPP is baloney.

Dose China have a plan to adopt SNA2008, or China is intentionally misleading the whole world to underestimate the real size of its economy?

China may already have 300 million people who are living in middle class life style even by US standard. My mother-in-law, a down-to-earth retired accountant, just could not believe it when I told her that more than 60% Americans can't come up with $1000 for emergency.

I agree. I only highlight the posts which are really 'interesting'.
PPP is make-believe. Take your stupid PPP arguments to the Indian sub-forum. Stop polluting my thread on nominal GDP.

You Indians are the ones trolling my thread.

Over the past eight years (on many different forums), I have told you Indians that PPP does not exist and cannot be used to purchased a single weapon system.

An F-35 costs $100 million US Dollars.

What is the cost of an F-35 in PPP dollars? It doesn't exist.

No serious person uses PPP to discuss defense budgets, costs of defense weapons, or national economic strength and the number of weapon systems that a country can afford. All discussions are based on REAL US Dollars, which is NOMINAL GDP.

Actually, I think many posters of the Russian contingent will argue that PPP does matter because they want to argue that the sanctions that hit Russia because of the Ukraine situation actually did not cause so much damage to Russia. But if one wants to invalidate PPP argument and only advocate nominal or real GDP in USD, then the Russian argument is slashed just as the Indian argument is.

Baloney.

India pays $55 million REAL US Dollars to Russia for each imported Su-33.

How much does an Su-33 cost in PPP dollars? It doesn't exist. The Russians have never sold an Su-33 to India for fictitious PPP dollars. The Russians want REAL MONEY, which is US Dollars.

You Indians (and possibly Japanese) need to stop flooding my threads with baloney PPP dollar arguments.

I want to talk about the real world (with a real nominal GDP) that has real defense budgets to buy REAL Weapon Systems.

@Nilgiri

I guess you need teach these Chinese a bit about economics. His fixation about Nominal GDP is quite fascinating.

Well I am yet to see some reference telling us that GDP PPP is make believe. Care to show it? Certainly IMF disagrees with you. Do you mean IMF are not serious about economics?

Answer my questions.

Show me a PPP dollar. Where is it?

How much does does an Su-33 cost in PPP?

Have the Russians EVER exported a weapon system to India and accepted PPP dollar payment?
----------

The answer to all three questions is:

1. PPP doesn't exist.
2. Su-33 is only priced in REAL US dollars. PPP is fictitious and has never been used in a SINGLE transaction.
3. Russia has never accepted payment in PPP dollars.

PPP is total bullshit and belongs only in the Indian sub-forum. It has no place in my threads, which deals with the REAL WORLD.
----------

Every imported Indian Su-30 MKI costs $55 million REAL US Dollars.

Its cost in PPP dollars is INFINITE, because PPP cannot be used to buy an Su-30 MKI. PPP is fictitious and total nonsense. You can't buy a single thing in the REAL WORLD with PPP.

Actually PPP can be used to afford a Su 33 in an indirect fashion. You produce goods and services which are cheaper in your country and then you export them at higher prices in international market. That brings you foreign exchange and you buy Su 33 with it. Come think of it, isn't what Chinese have been doing for quite sometime. :)

BTW I still do not see any reference stating GDP PPP is useless or what National Economic Strenght mean and its measures. Can't find one? Or you want rest of the world to take your words shall we say ..... Nominally?

GDP PPP physically will look exactly like USD because it is in USD. Just because certain items were not traded does not mean their value does not exist. If you buy one litre of petrol in china it would come at a higher price then say at Brunei or UAE. It doesn't mean that Petrol in Brunei local market has any less value than in china. It was simply not traded.

I don't mean to flood your thread with misinformation. But if there's a point to be made, I'll risk making the point.

According to your graph, India is much stronger economically than Russia. 2.4 trillion vs 1.5 trillion, sales of SU-33s included.
