I'm not considered son of soil: Musharraf

One again gentlemen, am I missing something here viewing the video and reading the comments? Musharraf is actually saying it would be "unfortunate" if this was being seen as a provincial/ethnic issue and he is hoping that those sitting in judgement and going for his jugular will not use his ethnicity as an excuse.

The reality is that we have had Punjabi and Pakhtun usurpers and we have had abettors and aiders of all ethnic background involved in the past military takeovers (and many of these people are still alive), yet the the noose is only around Musharraf's neck. Can this be a case of the country exorcising itself off its collective sin of military takeovers by scapegoating a general who is from a minority ethnic group? Since this ethnic cat is out of the bag now, the majority ethnic groups cannot downplay this as the perception will persist.

Musharraf's military takeover has a cast of hundreds. If this was to be a trial without favour, political compulsions and even ethnic considerations, then we would see something similar to Turkey where the entire senior leadership of the then armed forces and many other supporting actors (military and civil) were punished and sent to jail. If this is how this is to turn out, then we know that justice has no colour or favour for anyone. However the reality is that only one man is being singled out. Musharraf, personally, is not provincial minded at all.

He was not the son of soil but was made Cheif of the Pakistan army

He was not son of soil but reigned Pakistan for 9 years with full power

He was not son of soil but Pak army is bailing him and after a mock sentence he will be pardoned by pmln (according to some news) and free to roam Pakistan

pmln is sending delegation even before Treason case that he should leave Pakistan and no case will be further prosecuted.conformed by his lawyer Qasuri and ppp senator Babur Awan in Program of Kamran Shahid

Lanat on this character
Lets be realistic. What is a son of the soil in our Pakistani parlance? Perhaps its not talked about openly, but plays a role day and night. I have seen it in service myself but its not entirely debilitating. That is, work goes on and you manage and progress but it rears its ugly head quite often. Education and upward mobility in Pakistan is changing this but there is still a very nasty, undercurrent of the need to identify one as of the soil and those who are not. Outsiders cannot put their finger on this phenomena and the closest that I have seen someone coming to understanding maybe a strand of this is Anatoly Lieven in his book where he discusses this issue in depth.

I was on a course in the US and sat through a gathering and was exposed to the most disgusting display of provincialism. And this came from educated, some would even say, the "elite" of Pakistan. It was naked, outright bashing of a smaller ethnic grouping that felt out of place and time (I would have expected that in the 50s maybe).

Blaming division of country on Ayub alone is not fair. Bhutto was very much instrumental in what we reaped in 71. Moreover, it was bureaucracy which restricted west pakistanis' entry into higher echelons of public service, creating a sense of deprivation. Just like it is being done now. Balochistan situation has been created by politicians, including baloch tribal leaders; when situation gets out of control army is called in. As that is the last entity interacting, blame goes to them. Sam happened in 71.

We have to accept all the realities rather then myopically blame single institution for all wrong doings. Country get flooded, only people in frontline are from AF. Country hit by earthquake. Only people who really go into rescue operation and rehabilitation are them; NGOs, actors, singers and anchors only make money. Law an order situation goes out of control, call army. Please learn to acknowledge what betterment they did for economy also. President of Pakistan does not study each issue on microlevels. They rely on summaries prepared for decision making. If a wrong summary is fed he is bound to take wrong decision. Especially, if he is not having his family members and relatives overseeing all the departments.
Most reasonable and excellent post!

Well when was the last time a Punjabi general was dragged through courts with the media demanding blood? Why do you think Nawaz sheriff was saved and Bhutto hanged? Why do you think Ayub khan was let off with a slap on the wrist? And yahya Khan? General Niazi? I could go on and on..

You do realize that both Niazi & Ayub were Ethnic Pukhtoons not even Ethnic Punjabis - One wasn't even from Punjab whilst the other was from Mianwali not Punjabi heartland by any stretch - Saraiki & Pukhtoon - Yes....Punjabi - Niet !

Secondly Yayha was a Kazalbash not a Punjabi !

The only Punjabi to have messed up the country is Zia ul Haq but even he doesn't get the sole blame in this when Bhutto with Naseerullah Babur started interference in Afghanistan in response to what Daud Khan was up to & his daughter was in power in the early '90s when the Taliban were supported as an emerging group !

And Nawaz Sharif was saved the same reason why Benazir was saved or why Nazimuddin was saved or a myriad other politicians that had nothing to do with Punjab were saved whenever the Military took over !

You want to pin something on us Punjabis - Do so something that makes sense instead of spouting caustic racism !

And over here we're not even mentioning the fact that Nawaz Sharif is an Ethnic Kashmiri not an Ethnic Punjabi - But even if he was...so what ?

People are bad & policies are wrong - Not their ethnicities or their provinces !

90pc of army supports Musharraf in treason case: ex-military officers

Several former military officers have opposed the treason trial being held against Musharraf.

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – Musharraf’s latest statement over army’s support for him in treason case has ignited a new debate۔

Several former military officers have opposed the treason trial being held against former military dictator Pervez Musharraf.

Former army spokesperson Major General (R) Rashid Qureshi said if voting was held, 90 percent of the army would have voted in favour of Musharraf.

Former military officers reiterated that army endorses Musharraf on issues pertaining to Article 6.

The ex-army officers said Musharraf was being made a victim of political revenge in treason trial. The government wants Musharraf to pardon after conviction which would be very inappropriate, they added.

The officers said that a fair trial should be held while others also stated that Musharraf had constitutional immunity during his presidential reign, arguing that Article 6 cannot be implemented.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Khursheed Shah urged army to explain its position on Pervez Musharraf statement, contending that silence can be misconstrued as consent.

Pervez Musharraf denounced treason charges against him as a "vendetta" and said he had the backing of the country’s powerful army.

Earlier, Musharraf told reporters the "whole army" was upset with the treason allegations, in his first comments to international media since he was put under house arrest in April.

The allegations relate to Musharraf s imposition of emergency rule in November 2007, and are the latest and potentially most serious in a flurry of criminal cases he has faced since since returning to Pakistan in March.

The case puts the government on a possible collision course with the all-powerful army, which is reluctant to see its former chief suffer the indignity of being tried by a civilian court.

"I would say the whole army is upset. I have led the army from the front," he told reporters.

"I have no doubt with the feedback that I received that the whole army is... Totally with me on this issue."

An initial hearing in the case, being heard by a special tribunal, was halted on December 24 after explosives were found along the route Musharraf was to take to court.

The case is due to resume on January 1, but Musharraf said he had not yet decided whether or not he would attend.

"The way this tribunal was formed, which involved the prime minister and the ex-chief justice, this itself smacks a little bit of a vendetta," he said.

Musharraf s lawyers have dismissed the charges as an attempt by the government of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who Musharraf ousted in a coup in 1999, to settle old scores through the courts.

A good program by Dr Danish with Babar Awan, explains high treason, its trial and army act.

I think all those who were on side left him . Specially todays HC argument is very insulting for him. Seem very broken heart. Nawaz taking special interest in his case and making sure that he should appear in court today..........PMLn and its vendetta ....
What else can be expected from arrogant siri paya. Have you ever seen him talking to journalist in press conferences, as if they are not humans. I have seen him during a flight, when he had return from KSA, even at that time his arrogance was evident. Now you can well imagine. I tell you he wants that Gen Musharaf is hanged. It was Gen PM's greatness that he let him live. He was sentenced 250 years in plane hijack case. Had Gen PM wanted he could have very easily conducted his FGCM under army act for high treason.

Very unfortunate. If he is to be tried for treason it should be from 1999 and all those who abetted or supported or endorsed him should be tried, if not then this is political victimisation; escpecially, when imposition of emergency was on the advice of Prime Minister, who is constitutionally authorised to do that.

If Army does not take stand, rest assured they will be made and treated like a chawkidar.
@batmannow
just wait & watch , how & why this damocrazy ill be kicked to its, gutter again?

Lets pray that he recovers out of his health issues. He is the only one who did not have any financial corruption charges after him and only one who says Pakistan first.
I do not agree with idea of he contesting elections for MNA or even for PM. If at all he should be running for President again.
