ISLAMABAD: Sticking to his demand for the establishment of a Taliban office, Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan Saturday asked if Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) could be taken for peace with India, why could the same not be done in the case of the Taliban for internal peace and stability.
Talking to media persons here at a private school function, Imran called on the government to fulfill its responsibility with regard to the declaration adopted at the recently held All-Party Conference (APC).
He asserted that there had been a multiple increase in the number of militants and now they consisted of several groups from the initial one outfit due to the protracted war.
About inflation and the price hike, Imran charged this was the result of acceptance of IMF conditionalities. He termed the governments economic policies flawed and anti-people.
Without asking the militants to halt their terrorist acts, the PTI chairman advocated an effective strategy after the creation of an enabling environment to push things for peace in Pakistan and asked the federal government to take steps in right direction. No political party has supported the idea of allowing the Taliban to open their office. However, Imran declared the opening of their office a must and said without this, no tangible outcome was possible through talks via media.
If a formal permission is not given to the Taliban to set up their office and no measures are taken for establishment of peace, then the entire process for peace will be sabotaged and war will be inevitable, he warned.
Replying to a question, he said it was not his but the federal governments responsibility to hold dialogue with the Taliban and asked the government where these would be held. Imran called for ceasefire by both the sides and said the talks should not be held with those who would violate it.
He recalled all the political parties at the APC had supported dialogue with the Taliban and before that at all such forums in the past, talks were singled out as the peace option.
To another question, Imran said he would not leave Pakistan and also made it clear that he did not stash wealth abroad like other politicians. Therefore, I want to steer Pakistan out of crises and put it on the path of progress and prosperity, he maintained.
He said the beginning of this initiative had been started from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa where the provincial government since its early days had started enrollment of 150,000 children in schools to lift the literacy rate. Imran reiterated his resolve to implement the partys manifesto.
