Pakistani tycoon offers to set up camp for internally displaced people
Malek says it is time for the rich to come forward and help
Pakistani real estate tycoon Malek Riaz on Sunday offered to set up a well-equipped camp for 100,000 of the nearly half a million internally displaced persons (IDPs) from the North Waziristan tribal area where a military operation is underway against terrorists.
At a news conference in Lahore, the capital of the Punjab province, Riaz appealed to the government to facilitate his relief plan so that his 650-member team reaches the area and implements it.
Malek, who is the chairman of Bahria Town, a big real estate developer, said it is time for the rich people in the country to come forward and help dislocated people whose number has already crossed 450,000 and is likely to increase further.
The IDPs are living with relatives and also in a camp in the Bannu area of northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa while the government and the military are working together to look after their primary needs.
Collection centres and special bank accounts have been opened in the country to receive donations from public and civil society groups for the upkeep of the IDPs.
“Our 650-strong team including doctors, nurses and other personnel is standing by and ready to start work as soon as we get a go-ahead signal from authorities,” said Riaz, who is due to travel abroad on Monday for a week for a medical checkup.
He said the Bahria Town is ready to participate in collective efforts to provide relief and look after the IDPs.
“It is [the] duty of all Pakistanis to help displaced families,” he said, recounting public welfare activities funded and run by Bahria Town.

My close family members went to IDP camp with relief goods and they say its a total chaos over there.

PML-N censured for ‘not allowing IDPs into Punjab’

LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) lashed out at the Punjab government for not allowing the internally displaced persons (IDPs) to live with their relatives in the province and compelling them to stay in camps.
PTI Punjab President Ejaz Chaudhry said many IDPs had relatives in Punjab and Sindh but they were not being allowed to move out of the camps. It was a constitutional right of every IDP to go to any part of the country being a citizen of Pakistan.
Regretting that the Punjab government was in a way suspecting the IDPs were militants, Chaudhry said all IDPs were registered and checked by armed forces before they were allowed to cross the federal area into any province.
“If the Punjab government is really serious, it should immediately welcome the IDPs in the province and issue instructions to people to treat them as their brothers and sisters,” he stressed.
PTI Punjab Secretary-General Dr Yasmin Rashid claimed the people displaced from their homes hated staying in camps and had relatives all over the country. She said it would be much comfortable if they were allowed to live with their relatives in Punjab and Sindh.
She said the Punjab government was fond of making hollow statements and not delivering on promises. She said it should offer IDPs healthcare and educational facilities in the province.
PTI Punjab Information Secretary Andleeb Abbas said the PTI would keep fighting for constitutional rights of the IDPs, whom she claimed had been made to feel unwanted and unwelcomed by the Punjab government.

Punjab govt aims at forming world's largest volunteer force to help IDPs

LAHORE: The Punjab government will form the world’s largest volunteer force to help internally displaced persons (IDPs) of North Waziristan, a meeting chaired by Law Minister Rana Mashhood decided on Wednesday.
Vice-chancellors from public sector universities in Punjab met at the Government College University Lahore and announced that the universities would donate one-day salaries to the Chief Minister’s Fund in order to help IDPs.
The meeting also decided to contact renowned sportsmen, poets, writers and intellectuals associated with the universities and request them to donate their belongings for auction. The money raised from the auction will be spent on the rehabilitation of the displaced persons.
It was decided that the sports board will spearhead all sports-related activities and will also launch a website to coordinate with designated desks of all the universities. Mashhood told the meeting that a documentary made in Bannu will be shown in all cinemas before film screenings. He stated that a meeting with cinema owners will also be called to discuss this.
It was also determined that a committee of VCs will be formed and every university will nominate its representative to coordinate with the volunteer force.
While briefing reporters after the meeting, Mashhood said that IDPs had been forced out of their homes because of terrorists. He added that a team of volunteers comprising of university and school students would arrange different activities to support and generate funds for them.
In order to raise money, national cricketers will participate in cricket matches in Punjab, the law minister stated, adding that “the fee of these matches will be little more than regular matches.”
Mashhood said that IDPs were provided with SIMs through which money would be transferred to them, adding that the Punjab government was monitoring them.
Responding to the questions about Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chief Imran Khan’s recent allegations regarding vote-rigging in the 2013 general elections, the minister said that even United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) proved that his claims were baseless and untrue.
“We don’t have an objection to him holding protests; however, his protests are badly timed,” he maintained.
He said that the people of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa were fed up of Imran Khan but Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) would not take any action that could weaken democracy. Mashhood claimed that PTI supporters are also questioning the validity of these protest.

Coca-Cola Pakistan announced on Thursday its programme to provide relief to Internally Displaced People (IDPs) of North Waziristan. Coca-Cola has pledged Rs 10 million towards this humanitarian crisis, providing assistance to those affected by the military operation. By certain estimates, more than half a million people have been displaced and the number continues to grow.
Coca-Cola will partner with Jahandad Society for Community Development providing life-saving assistance to thousands affected by the operation. Provisions include emergency shelter, water and staple food items that will offer immediate relief and protection to those forced from their land.
