In September 2015, the Cabinet Committee on Security approved the purchase of Boeing’s AH-64 Apache helicopters for the Indian Air Force in a deal worth around $2.5 billion. The deal for Gunships was in two parts: one via Direct Commercial Sale (DCS) contract while the other by Foreign Military Sales (FMS) agreement, which the US government will supply the weapons, radars and electronic warfare equipment.

The contract was believed to have an option on follow-on orders for more Apaches. The 39 additional AH-64 Apaches are over and above the 22 originally contracted.

The Apache helicopters will replace IAF’s Mi-35 attack helicopters and will be armed with Hellfire missiles.
The 22 Apache helicopters ordered earlier will replace obsolete IAF’s Mi-35 attack helicopters. The Indian Army had also demanded Apache helicopters for its aviation corps, after army’s bitter and long-running dispute with the IAF for control of attack helicopters. These attack helicopters are to be deployed by the army as part of its three Strike Corps and for the new mountain strike corps being raised for China border. The army’s requirement is likely to be met with the acquisition of these additional numbers.

The first batch of the 22 helicopters is likely to be delivered within five years. The first helicopter is expected to enter the IAF within three years. The time frame for the additional helicopters is, however, not ascertainable.

Additional Apache Gunships will go to Army not Airforce . This is what happens when a Blog post written by some Dude on Internet is considered source of information .

First we are also getting new attack helicopters secondly both PLA and PA have massive Air Defence systems

Helis are never going to enter into a sam site.
Though MANPAD are going to be the big headache

Helis will be used for the CAS mission for the strike force... and strike force is not going to go in unless the air is secured... before that there'll be a air battle where SAMs will be cleared.... this is the old book rule.. but who knows what will tchange due to tactical situation.

In future strike groups sort range Anti Air Craft systems like Pantsir S2 are integral part. They will be big trouble for attack helicopters

Pakistan is in talks for both SU-35 and EuroFighter and one of them would be selected things take time. We don't announce things like you do. When the deal will happen only than it would be announced.

It is a fair bet that China's new heavy attack helicopter will appear before these 39 additional Apaches arrive in india.

India needs to work on its own gunships, er, guns, er rifles.:D

Couple of years ago I heard that eventually Apache numbers will be close to 80-100. So it's already 61 now, prospect of another 39. And I'm hopeful, eventually the number of LCH will reach near 200 in both IA and IAF.

But im guessing more than 100..

Attack helicopters or CAS ac are better off with the Army.

AF should worry about maintaining complete air superiority in the battlefield.

This are not for penetrating in pakistani territory and bomb. They are for attack on tanks from low altitude. Your argument do not stand. Pakistan does not have massive air defense. Whatever rogue shoulder fire missiles are there will suck against its highly potent EW systems.
