IDEX 2019: Russia brings out Pantsir-ME

Russian manufacturer Rostec showcased its Pantsir-ME shipborne missile and gun air defence system, a new iteration of the Pantsir-S1 ground-based system, at IDEX 2019 for the first time.
During a presentation the company said that the new system was already in service with the Russian Navy but declined to specify how many Pantsir weapon systems were in use, only commenting that the entry to service was recent because of how new the product is.
The system can be fitted to ships with a displacement of 500t and above.
The Pantsir-ME has a 30mm Ao-18KD automatic gun and a surface-to-air guided missile system, the 57E6-E1. As well as targeting high flying assets a company spokesperson said that the Pantsir-ME will be able to target low flying objects such as UAVs just five to ten metres above the sea surface.
Literature notes that the Pantsir-ME will also be able to engage with fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, water surface and coastal targets.
The gun is able to fire 10,000 shots per minute, compared with the ground-based system which is only capable of 5,000 shots per minute, at a 3km range. The missile has a 20km range according to the company.
In addition, the spokesperson said that the company is currently negotiating with a number of countries for the system in ship modernisation efforts.
The Pantsir-ME combat module turret has a weight of 7,100kg with ammunition, an aircraft tracking range of 28km and is able to engage with four targets simultaneously.
It is known that the ground air defence system has been used by Russian forces in the conflict in Syria with reports suggesting that the firings were not always successful. However, when questioned by a reporter a company spokesperson said that the Pantsir had a ‘1:1’ firing ratio.
Meanwhile, it was announced at IDEX 2019 that the UAE spent AED45.9 million ($12.5 million) for maintenance work and the purchase of Pantsir spare parts for the UAE Air Defence Force. The UAE is currently in possession of the Pantsir-S1 under a contract for 50 of the systems.
