I see it happening daily. Day in day out. People confuse Punjabis from India for Pakistani and vice versa. But tell me, why is "Nothing common with India" so important for you?

It is important to mention here though that "India" becoming one political entity today is a consequence of British imperialism. An Indian Gujarati and Manipuri prior to colonialism would feel as much kinship as a Pakistani and a Tajik would today. Some level of historical contacts and relative geographic proximity plus a common religion. Not enough to result in domestic organic movements to unite said people groups. Rather it takes an outside force (in this case the British) to unite such disparate regions and enforce their commonalities on them.

Having said that yes today India is increasingly tilting towards a "civilizational" outlook, as that is the only way it can realistically in the long run unify such disparate groups as Tamils, Kashmiris and Manipuris. But I digress now since the thread focuses on Pakistani identity.

People (correctly) give credit to the British for uniting Indians.

But it did not happen overnight.

Nor did the build-up of steam happen only in the 200 years they were there.

Enough credit is not given to the Muslim invaders and foreign dynasties for forcing these apparently disparate groups to realise their civilizational commonality. And the stupidity of fighting each other while outsiders walked in and ruled for hundreds of years.

That is not what "race" is.

There are dozens of distinct ethnicities (which I believe is what you meant by "race" since you linked it with claims of Arab ancestry by different Pakistanis. The term "race" itself is now defunct from any scientific/empirical/objective discourse due to its arbitrary nature and is now understood to have evolved into an artificial social construct meant to establish some symbolic cultural affiliation and is in no way related to one's heritage/ancestry anymore. "Ethnicity" is now used to denote a common ancestral lineage) living inside the Indian Subcontinent. A lot of whom originally migrated to these lands from elsewhere. For example, the research article below studied about 50 of these.

Very common to see pakistanis and Bangladeshis running "Indian" restaurants confined to "Punjabi" food.
Lot to do with acceptability of Indian food and soft power India carries which these guys leeches on.

Funny thing is, some Bangladeshi invented chicken tikka masala and half the other Indian dishes on the menu - today those dishes have worked themselves into the most famous restaurants in India. Identity crisis works both ways.

We as civilization survived by assimilation so we make our own version of everything.... Any cusine from Pak, Ind and BD will be branded as Indian. So all struggling owners of restaurant of Pak & BD go simply with flow as their energy is spent in earn and survive not in building brand. It's not identity crisis, it's just survival.
I never spoke about soft power, I said Indians are soft when compared to Pak as Pakistanis are fighters. I have complemented Pakistan hero.
