IDEF 2019: FNSS will deliver NRBC AV8 armored vehicle to Malaysian army

The Armoured Engineer Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Reconnaissance Vehicle (AENBCRV) version of the AV-8 Wheeled Armoured Vehicle (WAV) developed by the FNSS and DRB HICOM Defence Technologies Sdn Bhd (DEFTECH) partnership for the Malaysian Army is preparing for delivery in the first half of this year.

FNSS_will_deliver_NRBC_AV8_armored_vehicle_to_Malaysian_army_IDEF_2019_925_001.jpg

Passing all tests with flying colours, the AV-8 AENBCRV entered the second and final stage of the qualification process, during which its endurance was tested.

The AV-8 AENBCRV is fitted with CBRN detection equipment and systems to detect and classify of any type of chemical, biological, radioactive or nuclear agents. The vehicle can determine and classify the hazard zone and alert other military units and civilians of potential dangers, thus enabling them to take the necessary countermeasures.

Possessing a complex and modern system architecture and mission-specific equipment, the AENBCRV’s initial vehicle development processes – comprising conceptual design, detailed design, manufacturing and assembly – was carried out entirely by FNSS. The ongoing qualification tests serve to demonstrate that the vehicle fully and comprehensively meets the requirements set by the user. The first stage of these tests, involving Land Performance Tests and CBRN System Tests, has already been completed after being carried out at FNSS’ facilities in Ankara. The second stage of the tests – the Endurance Tests – were launched in Malaysia in February 2019. Following the successful completion of these tests, the acceptance and delivery of the first vehicle to the end user will take place in Malaysia in the upcoming days.

Under the project, four AENBCRV vehicles will be delivered, the first of which will be the vehicle that completed its qualification tests. The remaining three vehicles will be manufactured and delivered by FNSS by 2020.

The AV-8 AENBCRV stands out as the first 8x8 CBRN vehicle to be developed by FNSS. The components of the CBRN system, as the main mission equipment aboard the vehicle, was procured from domestic and foreign suppliers in line with the user’s preferences, and the integration solutions were applied together with the Environics company of Finland. FNSS has also conducted indigenization works on some of the CBRN system’s subsystems, thus aiding domestic subcontractors in acquiring new competencies.

Commenting on this latest milestone reached by the company with the AV-8 WAV project, K. Nail Kurt, General Manager and CEO of FNSS, said: “The AV-8 WAV project continues to be the single largest defence system export contract signed by Turkey in the field of land systems, and it is also one of the most complex projects in its field due to the large number of vehicle configurations involved. Integrated with a wide variety of mission equipment, the AENBCRV is one of the AV-8’s most challenging configurations to date. We have fashioned the vehicle in close contact with the user, ensuring they are supplied with the specific capabilities they need.

Our vehicle is now proving itself in rigorous tests, and I believe that it will pass all of these with great success, becoming the best in its class and joining the inventory of the friendly and allied nation of Malaysia. With this vehicle, both FNSS and the Turkish defence sector have acquired very important capabilities. In the upcoming period, we are ready to meet with the best solutions any need that the Turkish Armed Forces and friendly and allied nations may have in this particular area.”

POSTED ON WEDNESDAY, 01 MAY 2019 16:00

In parallel with the growing importance of unmanned land vehicle applications in both Turkey and at an international level, FNSS is showcasing its Shadow Rider concept on M113 vehicle at IDEF’19.

IDEF_2019_FNSS_presents_Shadow_Rider_to_the_Turkish_Armed_Forces.jpg

- Flexible solutions with modular ready-for-integration units
- Suitable for both manned and unmanned use
- Various communication and remote-control solution alternatives for different ranges
- Multiple day and night low-latency video transmission, from both inside and outside the vehicle
- Multilayered secure data transmission
- Advanced surveillance, logistics, mine clearing and disposal functions

With the Shadow Rider concept, FNSS turned the land platform into an unmanned vehicle, while also offering the option for manned control of the vehicle by a driver when necessary. The Shadow Rider concept is expected to carry out critical tasks on the battlefield, such as logistics support, engineering, mine clearing and weapon carrier missions. As a highly successful example and output of a cooperation between the main platform manufacturer and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), the Shadow Rider is expected to serve as the basis for all of FNSS’ future land platforms.

Highlighting FNSS’ development works on unmanned land vehicles, K. Nail Kurt, General Manager and CEO of FNSS, said: “FNSS is a company that allocates considerable resources to research and development within the sector. In doing so, our primary goal is to expand the technology base of the sector, and the Shadow Rider stands as an important reflection of this strategy. The Shadow Rider aboard the M113 that we are offering to the Turkish Armed Forces and to friendly and allied armies is a proof of concept of our applications for unmanned land vehicles. In the mid-term, we are preparing ourselves to develop and introduce many different types of vehicles to the field of unmanned land vehicles, and have already launched important works in this regard.”

ASELSAN is proud to present its new game changer Close-In Weapon System (CIWS) at IDEF 2019 and welcomed high-level delegations to the launching ceremony on April 30, 2019 at ASELSAN stand #1200.

IDEF_2019_Aselsans_anti-ship_missile_hunter_CIWS_launched_at_IDEF_2019_2.jpg

While the serial production of the new KORKUT 35mm Self Propelled Air Defense Systems and the modernization of Towed 35mm Air Defense Guns for the Turkish Army are ongoing, ASELSAN successfully qualified its brand new CIWS (previously known as KORKUT-D CIWS) for the protection of naval assets. In May, 2018, ASELSAN demonstrated the effectiveness of the new CIWS with the firing trials conducted under the supervision of Turkish Presidency of Defense Industries and Turkish Navy. During the trials with high-speed drone target, which represents a typical sea-skimming guided missile attack towards a naval platform, the new ASELSAN CIWS detected, tracked and destroyed the drone target in full autonomous mode.

CIWS are of critical importance as the final layer of air defense umbrella in defending naval platforms against aerial threats. The new ASELSAN CIWS provides the most effective air defense against the possible target set such as sub-sonic and supersonic anti-ship missiles, UAVs, fighters, helicopters and asymmetric surface threats. In addition to 35mm Target Practice and High explosive rounds, the new CIWS fires 35 mm Airburst Ammunition (ATOM) that is designed and developed by ASELSAN and they provide an effective solution together for self-defense of surface vessels.

The new ASELSAN CIWS is able to perform target detection, identification, tracking and kill operations in full autonomous mode. 3D search radar, fire control radar and E/O sensors on the new CIWS allow efficient operation of the system at night and under harsh weather conditions. The system can be operated by an operator or in full autonomous mode without any operator intervention. As a unique feature of the new ASELSAN CIWS, two different types of ammunition can be loaded into the system and the preferred ammunition type can be selected before the firing thanks to the Automatic Linkless Ammunition Feed Mechanism. Thus, the most effective ammunition type is used against different types of targets and the mission is executed in the most precise and cost-effective method.
