ICC appoints police veteran from India to spearhead its anti-corrpution fight

By The Associated Press

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The International Cricket Council says it has hired a 30-year veteran of the Indian police force to head up its anti-corruption unit.

Yogendra Pal Singh replaces Ravi Sawan at the ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit at a critical juncture.

The sport's governing body has struggled to combat match-fixing that resulted in three Pakistan players being banned earlier this year.

Salman Butt, Mohammad Amir and Mohammad Asif were banned in February for a minimum of five years for their involvement in no-balls being bowled at predetermined times in a test against England last year.

Singh, whose appointment was announced on Wednesday, has worked on corruption cases in India. Sawan is retiring but will remain a consultant with the ICC.
