NEW DELHI: India will order another two advanced Israeli Phalcon AWACS (airborne warning and control systems), or the "formidable eyes in the sky'' capable of detecting hostile aircraft, cruise missiles and other incoming aerial threat far before ground-based radars at a cost of over $800 million soon.

Top defence ministry sources say the "draft contract'' for the two new AWACS "is now finally in the final stages of being examined'' before it's inked as a follow-on order to the $1.1-billion tripartite agreement among India, Israel and Russia in 2004, under which IAF inducted three Phalcon AWACS in 2009-10. The purchase comes at a time when Pakistan is fast snapping at India's heels in this complex military arena, having first inducted four Swedish Saab-2000s and on the verge of getting four Chinese ZDK-03 AWACS.

India's tryst with AWACS has been beset with several problems. First, delivery of the first three AWACS , which have the Israeli 360-degree Phalcon early-warning radar and communication suite mounted on Russian IL-76 heavy-lift military aircraft, was delayed by over two years. Then, there were major teething problems in them getting fully operational, with the Phalcons even being grounded at Agra for some time.

But the IAF is all gung-ho about them, claiming they are "true game-changers'' in modern air warfare, which is more about BVR (beyond visual range) combat rather than face-to-face dogfights of yore. "The Phalcons significantly boost the effectiveness of both offensive and defensive operations. Their enhanced detection and interception capability, connected to fighters and surface-to-air missile systems, are tremendous force-multipliers," said an officer.

Apart from detection of incoming cruise missiles and aircraft from over 400-km away in all-weather conditions, and direction of air defence fighters during combat operations, the Phalcons while flying well within Indian airspace can also monitor troop build-ups or activity at airbases and missile silos deep inside Pakistan.

Indigenous efforts to develop mini-AWACS in a Rs 1,800-crore project approved in 2004, under which AEW&C (airborne early warning and control) systems developed by DRDO are being mounted on three Embraer-145 jets obtained from Brazil for $210 million, have, however, been hit by several delays.

As earlier reported by TOI, their project completion date has been pushed back to April, 2014. These indigenous airborne surveillance platforms will have a normal radar range of 250-km and a 375-km extended one, with a 240-degree coverage and five-hour endurance time.

Excelllent development.

But the deal needs to proceed without any hitches or delays that plague our arms procurement.

Russia has completed its part of a contract on the delivery of A-50 Mainstay AWACS aircraft to India, a Russian aircraft industry official said.

India ordered three A-50EI variants, developed on the basis of the Russian Il-76MD military transport plane and fitted with the Israeli-made Phalcon radar system, in 2004. The first two aircraft are already in service with the Indian air force (IAF).

"We have finished retrofitting a [third] transport plane for special tasks, and sent it to Israel in October to be fitted with electronic equipment for future delivery to India," a spokesman for the Taganrog-based Beriyev aircraft center said on Wednesday.

In many aspects, the A-50 is comparable to the E-3 Sentry of the U.S. Air Force. It is fitted with an aerial refueling system and electronic warfare equipment, and can detect targets up to 400 km (250 miles) away.

According to the Indian media, the IAF could order two more A-50 planes from Russia and Israel in the future.

In addition to the Russian A-50 aircraft, India has purchased eight Boeing P-81 long-range maritime reconnaissance (LRMR) aircraft from the United States, and signed a deal with Brazil to jointly integrate domestically developed AWACS systems onto three Brazilian-made Embraer-145 aircraft to be later commissioned with the Indian air force.

Is there a future requirement by IAF more than the current order??

I heard we were going for the carrier based AWACS, and were looking at US planes and radar, were there any development in this case or was it canceled?

They say prevention is better than cure,... if we are to believe this adage , more such early warning systems are the way to go !

Does this have AESA radar in it ?

Thats a good news. The only problem that i have is that we are paying way too much for Phalcon. I think we shouldn't include Russia anymore, all they add to the project is delays and cost over-run. I think we should just stick with Israel for this and after this purchase we can also take a look at new Russian A50. In short we need more awacs and this A50 phalcon version is way too expensive.

At Aero India 2011 the scientist were saying everything is on schedule, now whats this ? I will stick to what drdo is saying rather than trusting on TOI.

In order to launch AWACS from carriers, one needs carriers equipped with catapults (CATOBAR). CATOBAR carriers for the IN are still a few years away. Yes, we do need carrier launched AWACS to give real teeth to our carrier battle groups as and when they are formed but till they come along, we have to make do with a combination of shore based maritime reconnaissance fixed wings, Ka 31s and UAVs which are not really the same thing.

^^^ the Phalcon is an AESA radar bro. this is good but hope there are no delays the Phalcon's compared to the Erieye are definitely better and are one hell of a force multiplier

Ah!!! another blind statement from another indian .... this has been discussed to death.... can you do me a favour by letting me know that what aspects of both these aircrafts/radars you know other than that ;one is made in Israel with AESA radar and other is made in Sweden with AESA radar too....Don't tell me that you had a cup of coffee in both platforms and know A-Z about eachother: on that basis if someone comes up with such statement i would never mind.... but a lay man who has never been even close to both platforms when come up with such statements sound lame ;isn't it? or is it the same notion :whatever india buys is always superior to what PAF has or will buy
