IAF to receive CBU-105 next month


December 04, 2012: Shortly after appointing its new President and Managing Director in India, Inderjit Sial, Textron Inc. will through its subsidiary Textron Defense begin supplying the Indian Air Force with 512 CBU-105 sensor fuzed munitions next month. The intelligent air-deployed anti-armour weapon, currently in use in Iraq by the US Air Force, has already begun deliveries to the USAF programme office for the IAF. The two governments signed a $257.73-million deal in 2010 following India's interest in the weapon in September 2008. The weapon, which deploys independently guided sensor fuzed BLU-108 units, will be deployed from IAF Su-30MKI and Jaguar aircraft.


The Indian Air Force was highly impressed with the weapon system during a demonstration in 2008 following data shared about the weapon system and its operational deployment in Iraq. Specific data about the accuracy of the weapon as well as its post-conflict "cleanliness" was found to be appealing to the IAF. The weapon will serve as an effective deterrent along its borders considering that it is capable of taking on whole columns of armoured vehicles and tanks with only a few passes even from high altitude. Depending on the operational experience, the IAF may order more CBU-105s.

This is most devastating and the most scary weapon I have come across for enemy tank regiments.

Just launch 1 of these and a whole tank regiment goes down the drain.

One bomb is enough to devastate 40 enemy tanks, like it did in Iraq war. This weapon can neutralize entire armored brigade ina short time. :cheers:

That is the maximum efficiency of one bomb, which cannot be achieved every time. The 10 submunitions are dispersed 30 meters apart, so if there is an armored column spread thinner than 1/4th of the dispersion achieved by the submunitions (since 4 skeets are deployed by each submunition), the efficiency is reduced.
Moreover, the skeets cannot guide themselves onto the targets. Rather the onboard infrared sensors are there to confirm the presence of the target to ensure safe usage (they will self-destruct otherwise).

Nevertheless, it is a very potent weapon. :cheers:

This is an animation explaining Textron's SFW in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This is awesome! Your tax dollars well spent. You wold not want to be an enemy of the USA on the receiving end of these things. Obviously the B-52 can carry a whole bunch of SFW-loaded cluster bombs. That must be why a lot of pinhead nations want to ban them. They don't want the US military to beat our enemies with impunity.

How exactly? I couldn't find anything on the interaction you mentioned. Please note that the skeets cannot maneuver during dispersal.

Well if you use multiple bombs then the potency and chance of success.

Armed with 19 such weapons such a weapons load could take out the entire armored units of some nations!

I am sure that it was the wish of every Pakistani to have 1100 of such wepoans in PAF inventory and doing JV with Chinese to create such weapons on our own.

you think only one is deployed every time and from only one aircraft? These are called into action when the enemy regiment is seen via satellite. skeet's do guide themselves as indicated in the video...unless I missed something.

Exactly what I am saying they also communicate with each other so that each skeet engage one target. If a skeet could not fined a target it will explode in mid air.
