IAF to deploy Mi-17 chopper squadron near Indo-Pak border

Jodhpur: Strengthening its presence along the Pakistan border, the Indian Air force is deploying a squadron of its latest Mi-17 V5 helicopters, comprising about 15 aircraft, in Phalodi air base near here.

IAF chief Air Marshal NAK Browne will induct the new helicopters on January 7, defence spokesperson Colonel SD Goswami said.

The helicopter is an upgrade of Mi-17 in the medium-lift category and is equipped with sophisticated avionics and on-board navigation systems.

"It has on-board weather radar, state-of-the art autopilot and is equipped with the latest generation night vision devices. With these, the helicopter can undertake all- weather, day-night operations in any kind of terrain," he said.

Located between Jaisalmer and Jodhpur, Phalodi Air base was set-up in 2010 for air defence purposes in the western sector.

Doesn't change a thing, India Pakistan and China are the ONLY nuclear triangle on earth any war will mean complete eradication of life from this part of the world. There will be no war between these countries, they just would have to learn to water down their ego and coexist. These Mi-17s are no threat to our security, they are nothing more than target practice for Anza MANPADs, this may just be part of a regular deployment or an exercise.

Actually these variants are used mostly to ferry soldiers.I don't think these variants are ideally suited for carrying out anti-tank operations. Is there Kevelar protection ??

I'm sure the Russians put top notch ECCM on these helicopters because its what they're ground troops use for special missions in Chechnya where militants are armed with who knows what, plus they have to build technology which can go up against the Stinger, i'm don't know much about this "Anza" but it's definitely no where as advanced as the latest stinger models.

We have extensive experience using MANPADs in combat, in Afghanistan against the soviets.
Anza MK-III the latest variant is a fire and forget MANPAD, has greater range, speed, bigger warhead and has multiple guidance systems and counter electronic attack capabilities.
Pakistan Army, shot down two Indian Fighter Jets[Mig-21 and a MIG-27] and an MI-8 using ANZAs in 1999.

Well actually its ECM, pardon me for the confusion. And the Stinger has a max speed of 2.2 Mach which is supersonic not hypersonic. and the Anza itself is a copy of the outdated SA-7 from what i know Chinese assistance was used to develop the MANPAD.

That was 1999 and the Mi-8 is practically ancient the avionics on it are no where near as advanced as the Mi-17V5.

I think the ANZA MANPAD needs to be deployed against USA drone strikes & helicopters crossing into pakistan without clearance to really prove their worth....

FROM WHAT I UNDERSTAND THEY HAVE VERY SHORT RANGE IE 4KM so shouldny be too difficult to steeer round that threat radius anyway
