IAF Shortlists Five Aircraft Manufacturers for Avro Replacement Programme

The Indian Air Force has shortlisted five foreign transport aircraft in the weight-class of six to eight tonnes to replace its fleet of Avro aircraft under a three billion dollar project to induct 60 new planes.

"We have shortlisted five existing aircraft to replace the Avro. This includes the Russian, Ukrainian and European companies who are producing transport planes in this class," highly-placed IAF sources told Defencenow.com.

The companies in the fray include Russian Ilyushin, Ukrainian Antonov, European EADS Casa C-295 and Italian Alenia C-27J Spartan.

The vendor finally chosen by the IAF will be then asked to work with private industry consortium which is likely to be headed by the Tata Group.

As part of our efforts, we will now release a Request for Proposal (RFP) in the next few months after the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) approval and then choose the lowest bidder for the unique project, they told defencenow.com.

As per IAF plans, the twin-engine aircraft is planned to have a six to eight tonne payload capacity, cruise speed of 800 kilometers per hour range of 2,500 kilometers to 2,700 kilometers and should be ready before the end of 12th Plan.

The IAF is keen to exploit the Indian private industry for the programme to replace aging Avro aircraft and has sought Defence Ministry's nod for the replacement.

As per the plan, the first 16 aircraft would be produced by the OEM and the remaining would be license-produced by the consortium of private Indian industries with the help of IAF.

om.

which is the fifth one ?or their are two variants of ilyushin ?
although i bet on Italian Alenia C-27J Spartan .:)

How come IL -76 is in this category, thats not 6-8 tons!

. .
Il-76 and An-32 are not ilushian's and Antonov's respective offers.

I'd say Airbus and C-27J are most likely. We could see a lot of community here as these two are also in the offing for IN/ICG MPA (SR) and the Spartan has the same engine as IAF Super Hercs.

Good news and superb decision.

But why are you posting pics of 4 engine planes when tender is for 2 engin plane. I think you are posting wrong pics Correct me if wrong ?

 I think Sparky went a bit too fast by posting these pics. The competition is for a light to medium class, twin turbo prob aircraft, not a heavy class quad jet engine aircraft. The most likely offer of Ilyushin should be this:

IL 112

The interesting point is, that I recently read that the Russian had cancelled a procurement, because IL 214/MTA might be their lower end aircraft, with new AN 70s and IL 476 and new AN 124s above them. A very good mix of tactical and strategic aircrafts, sadly IAF seems to spread it too wide again, with too many different aircrafts.

I think we should join hands with Antonov...Ukranians don't really get such big projects and if they will get, they will provide us as much technology we want. Ukraine has great untapped potential and India needs to take the advantage of this potential. China has been using Ukraine for a long time, its time India follow the same path...

Antonov-An-74

Cost : 18-22 million $

Antonov An-140

cost for civilian version : US$9 million (military version won't cost much either).

I don't think we need to go for very high quality aircrafts any more. IAF already purchased C130j and C17, now its time to purchase some cheaper and decent aircrafts because IAF support transport of the biggest voluntary army in the world, they also need increase in the number of transport aircraft fleet with time. Its not like Antonov is offering very bad products, they are decent products which can operate at Indian conditions. There won't be any problems with Ukranians as they don't really get such big deals and they have such a great aircraft inducstry and Ukrainian aircraft industry is what Indians might need to develop their aircraft industry.

EADS, Alena, Ilusian, Antonov....which are the remaining two companies ???

There is no need to select a plane in hurry. The best option is to partner an Indian Company with Embraer/Antonov to produce a new system.

^^^
We are already preparing MRTA and according to some reports the RTA-70 will also be having a military version so i don't really think we should go for more smaller transport aircrafts, it will be better if we go for a heavier version like C17 if we really wanna build a new transport aircraft for army or air force.

MRTA is stuck and is not going to move ahead any time soon unless UAC agrees to share real work in development to Indian partner. The proposal from UAC is in such a way that HAL will be reduced to manufacturing the plane under license while paying for R&D. The tone of Russian Ambassador in the recent interviews further indicates that any JV with russian company is going to be an uphill task.
Thats why I advocate JVs with countries having successful aerospace industries like Brazil,S.Africa and Ukraine. Such JVs will boost our aerospace acumen not the ones with giants where screwdriver tech. is provided in the name of ToT.
