IAF moves proposal to acquire 48 Mi 17 choppers from Russia to strengthen transport fleet

@Abingdonboy will the new deal for for 36 rafale better than the Brazilian offer, ie including tot for 36 ?

On topic why didn't we manufacture mi 17v5 choppers in India ?
Bulk orders going abroad , even apache.

Why are we letting the opportunities let go waste..?

It is hard to say right now but given the potential of the Indian market I would say India is almost always going to get better deals than others especially these days when the MoD has all but removed graft from the table.

I have no idea why the V5s weren't manufactured in India, perhaps there were concerns that this would create delays and the IAF clearly needs these helos ASAP.

As for the Apache, the order (22-40) simply isn't enough to justify local manufacturing.

I understand the theory and this may be useful in a limited number of cases under very specific conditions but I would hesitate to include that mission in the primary roles/duties these helos are being procured to fulfil.

+ As for the Chinooks, the IAF is going to get FAR more than 15 that is a certainty, I've heard figures of around 45-50, of course procured/delivered in batches. Hopefully we will get a signature on 3 major helo deals in the next few weeks (S-70B, Ch-47F and AH-64E) all are desperately needed and have been stalled for years (the NMRH especially so).
45-50 is possible Number but the question is can IAF afford????

I'm expecting major news in late July/Early August.

+It should be worth the wait if what I'm hearing is true ;)

May be after Aug 15...

Can we just buy millimetre wave radar for our LCH , even if no tot because of apache ..
This technology can be bought off the shelf from the Israelis if so desired. What's more likely is that the DRDO will devlop such a solution for the LCH with external assistance.

Of course the IAF can afford such a number in the long term (this will be spread out over 4-7 years). The IA will also be getting some of their own Apaches in the long term.

By 2024 the cumulative capital expenditure budget from 2014 will have been around $500 billion USD. Considering this and the fact that large defence purchases are paid back over a period as long as a decade it is clear the money is there.

Sadly the story of the past decade is not that the military's modernisation efforts have been hampered by a lack of money but a lack of planning and a pathetically slow and inefficient bureaucracy. It is criminal that BILLIONS of USD have been returned in this time to the Fin Min in unspent funds, utterly criminal.
