The Indian Air Force (IAF) successfully conducted user trials of medium range supersonic Surface-to-Air Missile (SAM) ‘Akash’ from a defence base off the Odisha coast on Thursday. Three rounds of the missile were fired within three hours targeting para-barrels.

The missiles were launched from the launching complex-III of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur-on-sea between 11 am and 2 pm. Tests were aimed at gauging the flight consistency and effectiveness of the missile, besides ascertaining the serviceability of the system in various conditions.

A defence official said the mission boosted the air defence shield of the country and re-validated the weapon’s operational efficiency. During the trial, the missiles were aimed at intercepting the floating para barrels at a definite altitude over the Bay of Bengal. The entire flight of Akash was captured by electro-optical tracking systems.

According to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), ‘Akash’ is the only missile of its kind now available in the world. It is a useful weapon for both the Army and the Air Force and the first successful model of the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative.

The armed forces are scheduled to carry out a couple of more tests in the next few days.

Akash’ is a medium-range surface-to-air missile and it can reach targets 30 km away. The 5.8-metre-long sleek missile has a launch weight of 720 kg and can carry a warhead of 50 kg.

The missile is crucial to India’s air defence programme as it will be used to counter ballistic and cruise missiles, enemy aircraft and air-to-surface missiles.

It can handle multiple targets with the help of a digitally coded command and guidance system. It is fuelled by solid propellants. It can also be fired from tracked vehicles. While its land variant was inducted in the Army in May last year, the Air Force version was formally handed over to the IAF in July.

How is Akash only missile of its kind?

How is Akash only missile of its kind?

1. 3rd Gen SAM with high mobility. It means it could move with the armed thrust with armored division in the enemy area providing the land forces air defense capability on the move.

2. It is powered by its rocket motor, through out its flight profile, other than many SAM, which is powered to some altitude and then glides with the thrust. Thus making it highly effective, and agile.

3. Its Fire and control Radar, which is PESA Radar, which can track 64 target, and attack several target at the same time.

4. Cheaper in cost, and could be inducted in numbers.

So in short.

Advantage

1. Indegenous
2. Cheaper in cost.
3. 3rd Gen but still good in 4th SAM arena,
4. Highly Mobile
5. Tested by Indian Army intensely in the plains of Punjab, Rajasthan.
6. MK-1 already inducted and MK-2 is been field tested with longer range of 35 KM.
7, Good PESA FCR with 64 target monitoring and multiple target capability

Disadvantage

1. Its not Verticle launch SAM
2. Passive system and not a active system onboard or in short not fire and forget missile system.
3. It is not canitarised like Barak, which will lower the maintainance costs, and could be stored for long period.

I heard recently IAF has to shoot down a kids baloon with missile

Fake news and information. That Balloon was 3 mt in circumference, and was detected in the radar, and MKI was send to check this bogie which was bursted in the air with the 30mm Cannon.

Now don't ask me what is 30 MM cannon of the fighter plane, and the A2A missile.

Well, i must admit India has done serious work on air defence while Pak has not even thought abut it....in serious terrms

Pakistan was the first to field SAAB-2000 AWAAC than the Indian, but don't know why they crash landed with the Chinese AWAAC. With the funds available every forces do what they can do for the best, because they are the one who are going to fight with that.

I heard about plans to SAM'ify the BVR Astra, any update on that?

I think BVR and SAM missiles shares the same tech. as far as seeker is concerned and developing SAM or BVR is far more difficult than developing 2000 km range Ballastic missile.

There was the project called STB but it was the R-77 as SAM, never heard of Astra samify, but surely after Astra mature enough, but problem is that IN already have choosen Barak and high chances that IA and IAF will choose Barak over Astra as Sam.

Also if we sign Maiteri( chances are very high ) , then this will we unnecessary.

Maitri have been dumped for good, better buy Spyder as SHORAD

Actually, its not that straight. Pakistan has a higher hand in capability wise, when comparing the very short range defence, aka the MANPADS, while PA has Mistrals, RBS70 ,Stinger for the upper end and thousands of Anza for the lower end, IA still relies on older versions of Igla for this role.

Actually no, It's needed for Navy.
While Barak 8 will be equipping the bigger vessels , Karmortas are not destined to get them , at least till now. Barak 1 can be fitted but it would require addition of guidance radars. Only way is VL MICA.

What?? Successful trails??
Common IAF no complain about the technical deficiency. Not even about the bad production quality?? Afterall Akash isn't a foreign maal.

1. Acoording to the DRDO chief he did mentioned that they are working on 200 KM range SAM.
2. Acording to him he also mentioned India working on long range antiship or say anti CBG ballastic missile like DF-21
3. Astra is 3rd Generation SAM, though its old, but have many features that makes it different than others i.e fully mobile but lack modern features of 4th Gen like Active seeker, Vertical launch, Canitarization. Since India have already did JV with Israel for the Barak, so the Land version should be the Barak 1/2 with the Akash FCR.
4. VL MICA is the maitri, and what French want is the development at the cost of Indian funds.

1=> Yes of course. It's known, but the progress is not further the conceptual phase. And with the ER Barak 8 and 200km missiles of S400, it remains to be seen if we can allocate more money for yet the same category of SAM.
2=> AGAIN YES. And guess what we have already made significant progress in it. But range will not be satifactory, a range of ~900 km is what they are targeting. Although we had limited Anti Ship Ballistic missile capability in the form of Dhanush, which has proved its single digit accuracy.
3&4

Well all the above I agree.

But my only point was , what will be the SAM of Karmorta class, the list of ships being armed with Barak8 does not include it. Barak 1 will require adding extra guidance system.

So VL MICA may get the cut.
