IAF begins Apache trials

APACHE as Attack Helicopter
Mi-26 for Heavy lift Helicopter

My choices are clear ..Get the best in both category. Our Aviation industry will be matured enough to produce spare pats in 10 years. And before that i dont see any embargo on India (Actually i dont see any embargo in the future itself )..

BTW Why is there so much fuss about American stuff. If we can get P-8I, C-130, C-17 then why not Apache..??

Whats going on here???

BTW stick to the topic pls.

I think Apache B-III is better than Mi-28. It has better sensors and survivability systems. Can I say that Apache Longbow is the best attack chopper operational today? :azn: But the transport aircraft deal should go to Russia.

In my opinion, Apache Block III is indeed the best attack heli today and we should immediately go for it. The advantages are huge. In fact, we should go for Apache, C-130s, and if price negotiations can work to our advantage, C-17 also. We will, however, have to think twice before going for chinooks as we may have other cheaper options in that category.

My reasons for supporting these systems are,
1)No other country can offer us comparable technologies.
2)The number of attack helis we are going to procure is too less to make us prone to any future armtwisting.
3)We have no parralel programs running to develop these systems indigenously.
4)There is no danger of spoiling relations with any of our trusted friends as we are already operating their platforms in all these categories.

from now I think apache is best attack helicopter now so we should go for it

Yes, in fact there should be no delay at least in this deal. We do not even need tech transfer for Apaches, only a maintenance and logistics contract including mid-life overhaul agreement will do.

Welcome to India - Apache (ironically a Native Indian warrior tribe of America)

Whats the point in having such an extensive trail done for just 22 helis. If they select anything other than the Mi series from Russai they will have to set up a seperate logistic line for this 22 alone, which isnt worth it. Rather than this the IAF should order more Mi as a stop gap arrangement and help HAL speed up the LCH.

but as per our war doctrine ,attack copters are primerely for tank support role.
our defense forces never gave much importance to dedicated attack helos bcas of there vulnerability to portable SAM & ground fire ,Fighter jets were there best option earlier may be there seems some shift to there policy.

but in a choice b/w Apache & MI 28 i would support russian one .Apache no doubt has better radar etc but cost factor are also crucial for 1 apache 2 or more MI28 could be bought that would increase the numerical superiority in a battle. even the MI28 has more Armour than Apache. MI28 may look ugly with its nose mounted radar compared Apache but MI28 is more rugged (a quality of russian product ) .
also MI28 has a small compartment for 1 or 2 person(much smaller than what we have in hind) in addition to pilot & co
pilot ,so can be applied in evacuation of some other downed pilots of other copter or some thing like that which Apache cant do.
also to full fill the shortcomings in MI28 we have our ground attack jets (mig27,jaguar,mig21)

so who ever support my view replay with thanks!

Yes Apache may be better than Mi-28.But startegically it will not be the wise decision.

I am not sure how much comptent Apache is in high altitude but most probable IA will place them in weastern sector i.e desert and plains where Apache is best.So it will be like Apache is facing Apache as PA also have Apcahe much before than us.And if Us put arm embargo like 1971 then god help us...

Also Chinook have all weater capability and design will be help full to deploy troops in difficult terrain. And if arm embargo happen then it will not hamper our capability much.

2 cents ;)

actually you are wrong the PA do not have Apaches, they have not been offered them and could not afford them, instead they have the cheaper and older, more basic, cobras not even the USMC upgraded SuperCobras just old basic ones.

Map of operators of Apache (Soon to include India)

Also I think India should increase order to 50+ 22 is too small a number, and the number operational at any one time would, of course be less. But India has a habit of ordering an initial quantity, trying it out and if they like it following up with more orders, so maybe it's on the books.

I have a question

Are these new attack Helicopters Meant to replace the Mil25/35 Hind Helicopters or are they meant to complement them
Coz Both the IAF and the Army have a fleet of 40 Mil25/35 each and i dont think that 22 Modern Helis can replace 80 Older Helicopters since mil25/35 were acquired during the late 80s and early 90s

Frankly , ithink the winner will get a subsequent order in 2015 , for 50-60 Helicopters
Coz at that time india may begin thinking of replacing the Mil25/35

As far as LCH is concerned , Army Has ordered 118 Helis , not 200 as some one had said , while airforce's order is of 64 helis
Army also operate 40 armed Druvs

If there is one American military machine out there that India should go for then it is the Apache.

But I am still missing the Comanche. It must be revived.
