IAF all Geared up to work on LCA MK-2 aircraft, with HAL and DRDO : Chief

With the phasing out of MiG-21 Type 77 aircraft from its fleet, the Indian Air Force is now seeking to obtain initial operational clearance (IOC) for Light Combat Aircraft Tejas, which is developed by HAL, Air Chief Marshal N A K Browne said here today.

Simultaneously, the IAF is also getting ready to start the project for LCA Mark-2 aircraft, in collaboration with HAL and DRDO.

Tejas will achieve the IOC soon. They will take one more year thereafter for induction. The 48 LCAs being produced by HAL will be coming to the IAF. There will be two squadrons for this, Browne said.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of the Combined Graduation Parade at the Air Force Academy, Dundigal, near here, the IAF chief pointed out that the LCA Mark-2 would be the real LCA.

The Mark-2 will have a more powerful engine, radar system, air-to-air refuelling capability and advanced weapons. By the time induction of LCA Mark-1 is over, test flights of Mark-2 will also begin. The IAF is very much involved with this project along with HAL and DRDO,Browne said.

After reviewing the combined graduation parade of 202 commissioned officers, the IAF chief noted that all cadets completed the basic course for Pilatus PC-7, the basic trainer aircraft inducted into IAF in May this year.

For the first time we have finished the basic course for Pilatus PC-7 and 55 hours of flying training was given to all cadets. During the course, the first lady cadet got the first in flying on Pilatus, which is very creditable. The boys and girls are happy with the aircraft and the training, he said.

The IAF chief informed that from the next training course beginning in January, a simulator would also be available for PC-7.

after retiring mig-21
iaf no other option left to induct tejas

We are also eagerly awaiting the LCA to be operational.
Easy target practice for us.

Still no DSI and IRST like J-10B does?

DSI is not a requirement of 4th gen tech. Air intake of LCA is beautifully carved under Y-duct configuration. IRST is a requirement of FOC. Similar to EW suite, which is ready but will be tested on prototype first and will be added before FOC.

Don't troll. It is miles ahead of your junk.

It is miles ahead of that junk but not their junk coz. there still dreaming about J-10 and havent bought it yet so its still 4-5 yrs away from them and by that time MKII will be up and running

So you guys are comparing junks now? My junk is bigger and better than your junk. lol

I am really proud of HAL/DRDO for this tremendous achievement, it's not an easy task to design/develop a fighter aircraft. Many people criticized DRDO/HAL for delays, because they don't know what are all the complexities, a designer has to face during new development.

Our team has designed a telecom product, which will take 15 to 20 mins to boot when powered ON. Cost of this product is very less when comparing with other counterparts of the same capacity, but other company products will bootup in 7 to 10 mins but those were costly. Customer expects the same booting speed in our systems too. Right now we are using the processor which is having bit lower speed, so bootup time is high, if we have to reduce the bootup time, then we need to use a high speed processor which is costly, that will increase the product cost as well. While designing such small telecom products also we have to face cost overruns, designing fighter aircraft from scratch is like rocket science, so cost overruns are inevitable if we want a greater punch.

Don't forget, Even the small 3-pin wall socket and plug was matured only after human casualties due to shock/short circuit. After that only, the earth pin connector was made little longer than the other pins in order to make contact with earthing first before phase & Neutral does,so in case of a short circuit it can avoid human shock. The socket holes width also increased to reduce the resistance, during short circuit current flow.

We designed an ethernet card for one of our system, the on-board oscillator is not sending the desired frequency when the system temperature reaches beyond 60c, during design phase no one will expect such a behavior. After development, during testing we found this problem. Fixing an issue/bug is also not an easy task, we may need to implement the fix in firmware but hardware may not be compatible or software cannot process or we may need to change the complete FPGA/ASIIC program, multiple obstacles a designer has to face. Its personal experience, don't wanna go in depth :-).

Even for such a small telecom product, getting up from scratch is not so easy. When comparing with this, tejas aircraft is rocket science boss, plz understand. Our Manger always say that, a designer will never get criticized by other designers bcoz both know the difficulties, so dont get upset for criticism from others guys, who dont know how R&D functions:-).

tejas still much better than many others jets of russian inventory

Tejas Mk1 even with a slightly under powered GE 404 engine is a generation ahead of anything in PAF other than the small fleet of F16 from USA.

The mirages 5 & F7 which PAF flys are 25 YEARS BEHIND the technology of the Tejas

Even THE THUNDER which is their future main combat plane has inferior flight control , no composites materials and carrys chinease radar weapons and EW suites over TEJAS which has western designed israeli jammers Radar & weapons.

Their is a reason why each thunder costs half the price of a Tejas. They have cut corners too save price per unit.

It may not be a perfect aircraft IAF was waiting for but it can be there in next couple of years. This is a a good start from a nation which has not built any aircraft inlast 40 years.

Again I do not agree that DRDO has developed the aircraft as per requirement and time. however, they are the only one whom we(atleast I trust) to develop bigger and better things.
