Defence Minister denies intrusion by Chinese troops
Saturday, 01 December , 2007, 20:49

Gangtok: India on Saturday denied that China had intruded into its territory in the North-Eastern sector and had destroyed forward posts and bunkers in Sikkim but admitted there were divergent perceptions on the Line of Actual Control between India and China.

Defence Minister A K Antony on Saturday refuted media reports that China had destroyed two forward posts and bunkers on the Sikkim border last month.

Replying to a volley of questions by reporters here, Antony said, "there was no incursion by the Chinese troops in Indian territory, be it in Sikkim or Arunachal Pradesh".

However, he said there were divergent perceptions of India and China on the Line of Actual Control.

The defence minister, however, admitted that there may be isolated incidents on the borders arising out of the difference of perception on territorial jurisdiction between the two countries.

He expressed confidence that all minor problems and differences of perception with regard to territorial disputes between India and China would be resolved through bilateral negotiations.

Describing China as "our strategic partner", Antony said the armed forces of the two countries would participate in joint military exercise in the second half of December in order to understand each other better.

Antony denies report on Chinese destruction of Indian bunkers in Sikkim

By Sudhakar Jagdish

Gangtok, Dec 1: Union Defence Minister A K Antony today rejected reports appearing in the media about Indian army posts and a bunker being destroyed by Chinese forces in the Sikkim-Bhutan-Tibet border tri-junction.

"Nothing has happened in Indian territory," Antony said, when asked to comment on the media report.

Earlier, a national daily had reported that on November 8, Chinese forces had demolished some unmanned Indian forward posts near two Army bunkers against which Beijing had raised objections since July.

"The Chinese came, destroyed the posts and went back," the daily quoted an Army officer, as saying.

Antony today said that there are differences in perceptions, both in India and China, about the 3500-km long border that bifurcates the two countries, and added that this difference in perceptions sometimes leads to confusion, which get resolved through periodic flag meetings between the army commanders of the two countries and through diplomatic channels.

He also assured that all efforts would be made in the national security interest.

Despite 22 years of continuous border negotiations, the longest between any two states in modern history, India is the only country with which China has not settled its land frontiers or even fully defined a Line of Control.

China occupies 38,000 square kilometers of Indian Territory in Aksai Chin, 5,180 square kilometers in the Shaksam Valley in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (***), and staked a claim to 90,000 square kilometers in Arunachal.

The Defence Minister, who is visiting forward posts in Sikkim for the first time after taking over the crucial ministry, also pointed to infrastructures being made by the Chinese on their side, and added that the Indian Government is now seriously planning to construct modern communication infrastructure, particularly in the border states of Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram.

"We will build modern infrastructures on our side, but that does not mean to raise tensions," he said , adding that building infrastructure in the north-east states as quickly as possible is the "necessity of the day."

Earlier in the day, he addressed a Sainik Sammelan here where he assured the forces that adequate measures would be taken for their well being.

He admitted that steps taken for the welfare of army jawans, who have to spend most of their time doing their duty in difficult conditions and far away from their families, were currently insufficient.

"Armed forces of the country need better treatment," he said, adding that his ministry is pursuing a plan for providing better remuneration for the country's defence services personnel in the Sixth Pay Commission.

Antony said that he had come to Sikkim to acquire a first hand account of the situation on the ground. He is scheduled to meet soldiers deployed at the Nathula Pass on Sunday.

That's called Diplomacy. As soon as the PLA delegation landed in Kolkata, reality became a lie. India wants to learn the trick of the trade from the Chinese by playing War games in China next month with a large contingent of 120 soldiers.
They think Chinese will open the doors to there Pandoras box and show them everything. They are smart Alec.

120 soldiers is not large, more like in this case the militaries of both armies are trying to understand each others battle/training experiences.

.
Well! According to Indian Army press release, the word "Large" was used for 120 soldiers led by a Major. This has confused me too.

"China is our strategic partner.."

That is Indian speak denoting the proverbial thing has hit the fan. It's sort of an Indian tell.

What kind of argument is this? On what basis did you arrive at this conclusion?
As responsible nation, many small countries around the subcontinent as well as countries from African nation and Middle East have huge of expectation from responsible country like India in terms of Economic and Geopolicitical ties. Did you even realize what kind of negative message it will send to those small countries if India needs US to contain China.

It was widely reported that PLA has destroyed 2, or possibly 3 unmanned Indian Army bunkers. It is not a lie.

We have to keep friendly relationship with powerful neighbors. As the friends above said, it is diplomacy.

It is clear that the US wants to contain China by encircling her. Why do you think the US is closing in on India? you think it's all about we are natural allies and democracy mumbo jumbo?

Another thing, the US is closing in on Japan, South Korea, Australia and India in forming a quadrilateral Asia defence bloc to contain China or did you think they were having a get together?

India and China are mutual suspicious, therefore mutual containment is a natural policy. India needs US to counter China and the US requires India to work with them to contain China. This is a fact.

If the destruction are not a lie, shouldn't you guys be making a protest against China?

We have been maintaining the friendly relationship as well as reliable diplomatic ties with chinese from decades, question is not of keeping long lasting ties but instead it is our paralyzed political power prevailed in our country which is stammering from taking any serious military action for the fear of losing ruling power and saving the highest position. It is mainly evident from the fact that government disability to proceed further with Nucler Agreement with the US as well as taking fierce action against Communist government prevailing in West Bengal which is exploiting rural villagers to conserve their political interest. As long as Politicians don’t initiate any large-scale infrastructure project in the northeast, till then we should not expect to any transformation in the situation of North-east Borders.

More then diplomatic ties we need strong political desire which competent enough to take tough decision against adversaries even at the cost of their political survival.

Over the years Security personnel has always mentioned the fact that such incursion is taken place in disputed territories and identification of boundaries becomes quite difficult because of harsh mountains terrain and hence we should beefed up the security by taking into consideration the variables of Geographic terrain as well.

Your facts are not more then hot air and holds no grounds.
Oh dear, What makes you think that India need US to contain China?
First of all don’t teach us regarding how to contain our adversaries in terms of contention, as we are more then competent enough to play that tactics very well on our own.

There is an aged old idiom, which is prevailing from last many decades regarding contention of china. But till now, no one have achieved slightest success in his or her plot against china. This is all about Chinese formidability by virtue of which no one have even think about penetrating the sovereignty of Chinese, let alone containment of china.

Can you prescribed how do you going to encircled china? Merely having some biletral navy excersice in Indian ocean does't translate into containment of china. You think that US enticing India by nucler deal and India will get entangled within it. Pls do care before fuming such hot air, India had maintained, have maintain and will maintain its posture of Non-align status forever no matter what kind of eventualities came in its way and regardless of what fancy deal will US brought to lure India.
