Prime Minister Gordon Brown signs the Book of Condolence at the Chinese Embassy in London
The British tents on way to the quake zone homeless

A further 1 million British pounds injection of British aid for the China earthquake relief operation was announced today, taking the Government's total contribution to 2 million British pounds.

It came as 3,000 British tents arrived in Chengdu to give shelter to some of the many made homeless by the May 12 devastation and as Prime Minister Gordon Brown signed a Book of Condolence in London.

The British Ambassador to China Sir William Ehrman said the first tranche of the British Government money, channelled through the China Association for NGO Co-operation, was already funding the purchase of the tents, along with food, water and medical equipment.

This second tranche will provide a further 5,000 tents and also satellite communications equipment, to the value of another 1 million British pounds.

On top of the British Government's tally British companies are making sizeable donations which have so far amounted to some 2.5 million British pounds. Additionally contributions in kind are also being made by British firms, for example a fleet of 6 excavators and supplies of pharmaceuticals.

The British NGO community is also contributing actively. For example, a Beijing book club sending almost 4 tonnes of aid to Chengdu last weekend.

Sir William today again paid tribute to the rapid and massive response by the Chinese Government, People's Liberation Army and its people and also expressed thanks to those who had located and helped Britons caught up in the disaster. He said: ''The feelings of all of the British Government and people are with the Chinese people at this time.''

Thank for sharing,AN

and guess it's about time we helping Myanmar.

What I read about Chengdu defence aviation industry news is that only 2 people dead in the quake, 7 seriously injured, 20 lightly injured. People are back to work, including fixes, etc, since May 14.

Dear friends,

check out the Jeans news you find that it is not reporting what it sees, all hearsays instead, aren't they?

in lack of firsthand information, Jeans has to make full use of their guess work.

firstly, there's no longer a "Commission of Science Technology and Industry for National Defence" in China, it is now State Administration of Science Technology and Industry for National Defence in stead (SASTIND), Where Mr Chenqiufa has taken the role of president.

Second, the national defence industry emergency relief programme was launched early on May13, one day after the quake hit, not May19. it's publicly issued but pity Jeans made a wrong note.

(Chinese)

in the notice there's a line about casualties in military industrial enterprises, which goes like below:
"some of the military and civil explosive device manufacturers has suffered from casualties, and there are people buried under rubbles."

this is not necessarily directed towards CAC productions,as there are so many military enterprises in the western province of China, but it obviously inspired a good assumption for Jeans.

CAC is one of the most important unit among all military manufacturers in China, they selected Sichuan, they know well of the seismic belt. hereby I do agree with Icecold, why not assume that these military facilities be earth quake proof?

611 Institute, in charge of R&D on JF-17 programme, is located in town of Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province. you know the city is fine by now.

I dont know exactly where the JF-17 production line is located, beside its approx airt southwest of Chengdu, which is not a hard-hit area during the quakes.

so far as I know, some of their workers and engineers were injuried by the crushing glass, electricity supplies suspended at one point on May12 and the research team moved to a CAC's hotel in safty measures. CAC has proclaimed they would resume production by May15.
(Chinese)
in which it says no material affects occured to CAC.

Chinese media coverage on Wenchuan earthquake is very transparent by now. I'll get you updated when there's anything new about CAC.

Thanks for the update!

you may find nowhere as close informations as below. try to make your own judgement on them.

1. CAC has resumed full production

People's Daily-AVIC-1 declared on June 3rd that despite a measure of damages of both workshop building, facilities and service parts, CAC has got into full productions again 5 days after the wenchuan earthquake which killed nearly 70000 people since May 12.

the resumed productions include J-10,Fc-1 and an engine replacement for J-7G.

AVIC-1 also said that their 2008 plan are not to be modified: "both the annual product and the goal of the year are unvaried"

¼ßÊ®¡¢èÉÁú·É»úÕðºóÈ«Ãæ»Ö¸´Éú²ú --ͼƬ--ÈËÃñÍø

the J-10 plan is now at an annual product of 44, some say it might be reduced to 42 this year due to the earthquake damage.

2. Possible casualties of China's millitary R&D group.

17 scientists, including 3 from the Chinese Academy of Engineering and other 14 experts got burned under rubbles in a plant near Qingpin county,Sichuan. the 3 academicians and 11 experts were laterly rescured safe and sound, the rest badly injuried (or died).

3. First test fly after earthquake

China Aviation Journal-CAC's first test fly after wenchuan earthquake was implemented on May 14, by Lizhonghua the most famous test pilot in China.
a little earlier,by the earthquake day, CAC had completed system improvement for Fc-1 and engine replacement for J-7G.

4. confirmation of CAC's fullly recovery

May 22nd, a meeting of AVIC-1's relife command center was hosted by Linzuoming, general manager of AVIC-1. he cheered up the news about CAC's fully recovery and urged promoting the key plans which involve multiaspect collaborators in order to counteract the detrimental effect caused by the earthquake.

5. Big loss on Dongfang Steam Turbine Plant (DFSTP)
the DFSTP is the biggest millitary related heavy industrial enterprise in China, likely also the biggest in Asia.
it's located in Mianzhu, only 30 kms away from wenchuan, the epicenter. 99% of its building collapsed inculding workshops, research institutes,12 residential buildings and a primary school. at least 58 workers and more than 200 students were lost, and other 500 people missing.

the direct loss reaches 7 bln rmb yuan, which was being quoted by Jean's Defence.

the managemental administration is recently thinking of relocation.

not really~as i know from the fourm of official in china, the development centre and factory in Chengdu, Sichuan province, are resume from the earth quickly. They are producing again and well

yeah, you are true, if we focus on the official news, you will see that the factory has resumed production 5 days after earthquake in sichuan province.

you are right upstair~ many people died in the big earth quake. but some countries are say some stupid words to china..i mean korean. they have no rescue team and no help to the people who sufferd in the earthquake but laugh at them and say good. i hate korean if they have no intencive to say sorry

of course south korea is not wisable and kind to chinese people, however, wo chinese people need not apologize, we will stick together more closely, and we will construct our country more beautiful. from another vision, if a country only can laugh to others' clamity and disaster, but what he will expect to when the same disaster to him?

i think we should be sad and greive with our chinese brothers but lets not forget that the delay in the delivery of this aircraft is a matter of national security.

i believe china will perform his promise to pakistan.
