What's new

I am out of the loop? Is India now officially called Bharat?

'India' has everything to do with the word 'Indigenous' and very little to do with the word 'Indus' because the Persians who came through Indus did not call it India and the Europeans in whose era the name 'India' caught up, did not come through Indus!

'Hindusthan' might be a derivative of 'Indus', but not 'India'

False.

India is Greek corruption of the Sanskrit word Sindhu for the River Indus.

.
Isn't it common sense Pakistan is a new country like 'India' and every post colonial country that emerged after the Europeans left?

What happens to the name India? It came with the British, and should have left with the British. The locals continued to call their land Sind, just as they did before the British came. Last time I checked it is part of Pakistan. Pakistanis cannot call the entire country Sind, their name has to accommodate the other regions that formerly belonged to Afghanistan.
It didnt come with the brits, history has recorded variations of India throughout the centuries. India is the latest avatar of this nomenclature. Almost every country has gone through variations of their names. Its not a big deal. India will remain the name of this country for the foreseeable future, cry as much as you or anyone else wants.

You mean you 'Indians' knew you were 'Indians' before the British came? The only people who knew they were Sindi (the original local name) were the people of East Pakistan. None of your ancestors before British arrival identified as Sindi.

Almost every country has gone through variations of their names.

Please tell me which variation of the name 'India' YOUR ancestors identified with before the British arrived?

Go read my posts again, never said my ancestors identified with the name India or any variations of India. The rest of the world did that. My ancestors lived in their own kingdoms with their own names, i nevr denied that. From the beginning I said India is a concept, no clear boundaries untill British India came, and then independent India came into being. But now we do identify with the name India. Its ours as much as Pakistan is yours even though the latter's history is much shorter. So you (and anyone else who wants to) can keep crying and complaining "India is not your actual name" and what not, but the people that matter (Indians and the rest of the world that does matter) will continue to call our country India. There is nothing you can do about it except cry.

No River Indus in Mexico or Latin America .
Native Americans aka red indians
Indiana state of America
Taino Indians of the Caribbean .

Latin root "indegena
natives of the countries , people who follow the actual tradition, religion and culture of the country .

.
The rest of the world did that.

The rest of the world called a lot of people India, including:

*Indonesia (formerly Hindia Belanda, meaning Dutch INDIA)
*the native Americans --- still called Indians by Americans, and they even self-identify as Indians!
*the West Indies.

But hey, what matters is what you call yourself. Your ancestors never knew they were Indian until the British taught them they are Indian, starting from their initial company territory in Bengal. I'm a Bengali, I'm pretty damn sure my ancestors since 50,000 BC never identified as Indian or Sindi until the British arrived.

Read my posts again, i am not claiming my ancestors called themselves Indian, infact i am agreeing with you they didnt claim themselves Indian untill recently, but now its wholly ours and ours alone. If the name India is so shallow as you claim it to be, why do you care what we call ourselves? We are happy with it and we love it.

Christopher Columbus was lost and thought he discovered a path to India when he discovered the americas.

There’s no correlation between the words India and indigenous. You should’ve paid more attention in your history classes.

Well I took Spanish at school and always wondered why there were Indians in that part of the world , enquired with the teacher who taught me the meaning & history that the people who followed the actual tradition, religion and culture of the country . But there are very very few of them now .(Almost the entire American land has been converted to Christianity/Catholic by the Europeans.) So why are they called Indians I had asked. Was told this word comes from the Latin root "indegena" !!

Taino Indians
