'I agreed to become a suicide bomber'

A 14-year-old boy in the tribal region of Bajaur, in north-west Pakistan, says he was detained by Taliban forces who tried to turn him into a suicide bomber. The boy is now in army hands.

He provided a detailed account to BBC correspondent Orla Guerin. His story cannot be independently verified.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

The boy says he was beaten until he agreed to become a suicide bomber

There were five people who came after me from a place in Bajaur. They tricked me. They told me they were going to behead my father.
I went with them but my father wasn't there. They tied me up.

They said: 'You have two choices. We will behead you, or you will become a suicide bomber.' I refused.

There were two more guys of my age. They were also training to be suicide bombers. If we refused they would tie our hands behind our backs, blindfold us and start beating us.

They brainwashed us and told us we would go to heaven. They said 'there will be honey and juice and God will appear in front of you. You will have a beautiful house in Heaven'.

We used to ask them to let us out to pray. They would reply 'you are already on your way to heaven. You don't need to pray.'

They beat me hard for five days. I wasn't given any food. While they were beating me I agreed to become a suicide bomber. They separated me from the other boys.

Mosque mission

They took me to a dark room and started giving me pills. I was handed over to Maulvi Fakir [the Bajaur Taliban commander]. After all this preparation they said I was to go and do the job in a mosque.

Before the Taliban came we used to enjoy freedom. We used to play, and go to our schools.

It was an ordinary mosque but the cleric there used to talk against the Taliban, and they declared him their enemy. They told me the cleric was a non-believer, a non-Muslim.

They took off my shirt and put the jacket on my shoulders. There were two hooks on my chest. They told me that when you go there you say 'Allahu Akbar' [God is Great] and then you pull apart these two hooks. Then they took me there, showed me the mosque and went off.

I was drugged and I couldn't feel anything. I only came to my senses when I arrived in the mosque. I saw the peaceful kind face of the cleric, and I saw the mosque was full of holy books. I saw the people praying. And I thought, they are all Muslims. How can I do this? I decided not to and I came out.

I sat under a tree outside the mosque and waited for prayers to be over. After that I made my way back to the Taliban. Then they called me 'a son of a *****' and asked why I had come back without doing it.

I told them I could not do it because they were carrying out body searches of all the people entering the mosque. They took off my vest and handed me over to Maulvi Fakir.

They tied me up but I told them to give me another chance and I would do it. They trusted me. I was roaming around with them for a couple of days. I got to the road, found transport and came home. They followed me to my house. They wanted to know if I was still there or had run somewhere else.

The Taliban had beaten me so harshly my back was scarred. When my parents saw that my mother started to cry, and told me not to go back to them. My father asked them why they were after his son. One day he took his weapon and went after them. But they wanted to kill him so he came back home and closed the door.

Before the Taliban came we used to enjoy freedom. We used to play, and go to our schools. There were no restrictions on us. Morning and evening we used to play games, and sit and chat with friends. We used to listen to music on our mobile phones. They banned that. They stopped us doing anything. They stopped us playing cricket and going to school. We felt like prisoners.

I want to join the army because they are the defenders of the land. They are fighting for the right cause. I want to fight against the Taliban. I have no other intention except to defend my country. The Taliban should be eliminated.

I want to tell the Taliban that they are cruel, and what they did to me was unjust. I can't kill innocent Muslims.

I am not afraid of them. I am only afraid of God. I am answerable only to Him.

I suppose we should all be glad that this young Muslim was afraid of God. If he had been an agnostic he would have carried out his duty and the Taliban would have claimed he went to Paradise.

Indeed a moving story how childhood is brutalized.

I want to ask my Pakistani friends why they don't react the same way for Kasab. How different was he or LET which made him what he is today?

Your consciousness is jolted only when Muslims are killed or it is different set of values for Indians. I know all of will say together there goes an Indian but this is what I can’t understand. How different is LET and Taliban whatever may be the cause we are talking about death of innocent human beings.

As I write this I can visualize how difficult life might be in Peshawar but when you send these non state actors you feel correct and justified. How can you have this double standard? You are trying hard to fight terrorist with right hand and at the same time encouraging them with the left hand ….how can this be explained?

Friends on both side of the border we may have some stupid fanatic elements but as a civil society if we try to cover them and justify their action there will be no end to this. No religion as I know teaches to kill in the name of God .Bilaterally we have lot of pending issues so do other countries in the world. In the present time when resources and opportunities are scarce there will be some tiff of and on.

You can argue and shout my thoughts down but as you do it please ask your self is there any sense in what I said. Let not our nationalities stop us from thinking and behaving like normal human beings. We should not forget that the general I can piss longer than you debates that we have on topics of death and destruction is on the blood and suffering of common man who is just trying to make his ends meet.

The general principle what goes around comes around hold good to all irrespective of religion, nationality or any other differentiator among us.

I think its always a good idea to look within ones self before lecturing others on what to do. Cause talk is cheap actions are not. Now while saying that I am not in favor of what this Kasab guy did, but your assumption that we don't condemn such acts is completely based on false hood. We on our side of the border condemn these acts as much as you guys do, and if you think that our government is spending their days and nights trying to destabilize your country then your gov is guilty ours.

I appreciate your response…

What can our government do, what are the options just look at the Headingly and Rana case where is it heading to. We can’t control the action on the other side of the border for that we have to depend on the Pakistani government. I agree we should trust them more but recent history goes against this wisdom. Pakistan is a sovereign country we don’t want to advice them how to run their affairs but repeated acts of terrorism emanating from your soil forces us to think twice.

These are the strategic assets created by the people in government which they are reluctant wind up. Taliban is just a case of an experiment gone wrong but no one seems to learn the lessons. Why the anti India rhetoric can’t be replaced with a strong and powerful Pakistan. People of Pakistan have to say enough is enough. India has enough problems of its own if we stop hating each other and carry on with our lives we can make lot of difference to people of both countries.

The other option is let us go all out at each other and get ourselves rid of this itch. At least whoever is left in whatever form will have a peaceful life. All will agree that this time there will be no unfinished business. We living outside will have lot of stories to blog about as how we nuked each other out of this world and the world will be laughing at us.

The whole story seems to be true and is greatly inspiring and heart-pinching. What if that young lad had blown himself inside that mosque? Surely we don't need answers for everyday we see the consequences. This act of this young boy makes him a perfect candidate to enter the heaven.

I remember that how Baitullah had a number of these aged kids in his custody and how he used them against his enemies.

I want to join the army because they are the defenders of the land. They are fighting for the right cause. I want to fight against the Taliban. I have no other intention except to defend my country. The Taliban should be eliminated.

Just a thought if he applies for army, Will/Should he be recruited???

The same point I made earlier I will make it again the problem is that the majority of Indians go by the school of though that Pakistan or some elements in Pakistan which are supported by the either the masses, or the gov, or some part of the Gov are up in arms against the Indians. Part of it is true, but it does not only holds against us it true for you guys as well. So when you mention the likes of Rana, I am not much aware of the news, but the contradictions in the reports are pretty obvious. The US and western media has not blown in out of proportion, and the part where India is connected to it is not even mentioned as such. But the Indian media is having a diarrhea of mouth over this issue, like they do with any thing that is connected to Pakistan. Now i am willing to bet any thing that there is a 50 % chance that this case will turn out to be the one like those poor students in England where the British authorities made an @$$ of them selves and then to save face they just deported them back to Pakistan. It has become more of a fashion these days to bash Pakistan, and any thing Pakistani. And hell if you catch a Pakistani he sure is a terrorist. And for your question over what can your government do. They for one can stop sending people over the likes of Kashmir singh and company. I am not going to go over the TTP issue as the there is no prove thing comes up. And rightly so the day the prove is out then we can talk about it. But the issue with Kashmir singh was for all to see. See the problem is takes two to tango. It was nice talking to you hope to hear from you soon.

Correction TTP.. which is product of Pakistani ANP, northern alliance and indian RAW.
I have said this before on this forum that from last 9 years indians and northern alliance is killing Afghan pashtuns selling their organs and abducting their childrens and training them as sucide bombers or millitants in personal army of Abdullah Abdullah.
Now Pakistan is facing this menace which was obviously non existing 9 years before.
I think we clearly see links to all the events before and after last elections of Pakistan.
We clearly see the agenda of TTP when they started their target killing with General Mushtaq Baig! and last one general serving in UN army!

Clearly, the boy uses TTP and Taliban interchangeably. Otherwise, I think we covered this ground in the "Proof of Indian Involvement" and "Bomb hits Pakistan's Spy Agency" threads, which, as so far no evidence of Indian involvement has been presented, finally prompted AM to claim that it doesn't matter who gets blamed as long as Pakistanis agree that the local militants need to get taken out.

Or, as I see it, defaming the innocent to motivate your allies to aggression, and your enemies to surrender. I recall in 2003 that at least one Iraqi commander who surrendered quickly, claiming that the war was a joint plot between Saddam and Israel to destroy Iraq.

The problem with that, of course, is that it sets your country up to create new enemies. Not a problem, of course, for the military and civilian elite if they see such things as a way to maintain their power, wealth, prestige, and privileges. BATMAN, you're a Pakistani, do you think that Pakistani officials break lots of promises and tell lots of fibs just in regards to what goes on locally and nationally for their own personal profit? Do you think they would do anything different in regards to war and peace?
