Hydro power plants updates

January 10,2023: WAPDA has awarded contract Package XI of Mangla Refurbishment Projectfor Units 9 and 10 to G.E Hydro France. The contract worth Rs.11.922 billion includes manufacturing, supply, installation and commissioning of the two units.

The contract signing ceremony was held at WAPDA House today. General Manager (Hydel) Development WAPDA Ihsan Ullah and representative of G.E Hydro France Abubakar signed the agreement on behalf of their organisations. Chairman WAPDA Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd), Member (Power) WAPDA Jamil Akhtar, Project Director Mangla Refurbishment Project, senior officers, representatives of the Consultants, and the Contractors were also present on the occasion.

WAPDA is implementing Mangla Refurbishment Project with an approved PC-I cost of Rs.52.224 billion. The Project is beingcarried out in various phases, wherein the generating units are to be refurbished by closing down one tunnel (two generating units) at a time.The refurbishment works have been divided into 11 different packages. Prior to signing of Package-XI, as many as nine other packages have already been awarded, while works on four packages have been completed. Refurbishment of the first two units has beencompleted in 2022, while refurbishment of all 10 generating units is likely to be accomplished by year 2026-27.

Mangla Refurbishment Project, on its completion, will enhance generation capacity of the existing Mangla Hydel Power Station from 1000 megawatt (MW) to 1310 MW,thus adding 310 MW additional power with average 1610 million units of additional energy per annum to the National Grid.

It may be mentioned that the USAID is providing US$150 million as grant and AFD is providing Euro 90 million as loan for Mangla Refurbishment Project, while rest of the amount is being arranged by WAPDA through loans and from its own resources.

Under Construction 884 MW Suki Kinari Hydropower Project located in district Mansehra of KPK Province.

The largest Pelton-type turbines (4 x 221MW) in the country are getting in place at Suki Kinari Hydropower Project. ANDRITZ Hydro is the supplier of these monster turbines.

It is pertinent to mention here that SKHPP is the highest head project in the country with a gross head of 922.7 m.

The construction activities were started in 2017 and expected completion date of the project is 2024.

Mohmand Dam Project: Project likely to be completed in 2026..

January 25, 2023: Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) was briefed during his visit to under-construction Mohmand Dam Project that the diversion system is scheduled for completion in November this year, while the project is likely to be completed in 2026.

WAPDA is constructing Mohmand Dam Hydropower Project on River Swat, upstream of Munda Headworks in Mohmand District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.

Mohmand Dam is a multi- purpose project.

On completion, it will store 1.2 MAF of water and help mitigate floods in Peshawar, Charsadda and Nowshera.

Besides supplementing 160,000 acres of existing land, it will also irrigate 18,237 acres of new land in Mohmand and Charsadda.

Installed generation capacity of Mohmand Dam is 800 MW. It will contribute 2.86 billion units of low-cost and environment friendly hydel electricity per annum to the National Grid.

The project will also provide 300 million gallons water per day to Peshawar for drinking purpose. Estimated annual benefits of the Project stands at Rs. 51.6 billion. A sum of Rs. 4.5 billion has been earmarked for Confidence Building Measures (CBM) in the project area for socio-economic development of the locals.

The rotor of the 2nd unit at Suki Kinari Hydropower Project was successfully hoisted.

On the morning of 31st Jan 2023, the rotor of Unit#2 was successfully hoisted, achieving another major milestone at the Project. Total weight of rotor is about 406 tons, which is the heaviest hoisting component in the electromechanical equipment of the entire unit.

TARBELA dam 5th extension.

January 20, 2023:
Chairman WAPDA Engineer Lt Gen Sajjad Ghani (Retd) visited Tarbela 4th Extension Hydel Power Station (T4) and inspected operation and maintenance (O&M) activities of the power station, commissioned in 2018.

He also had a detailed round of the under-construction Tarbela 5th Extension Hydropower Project (T5) to review construction activities on the sites.

The GM (Tarbela Dam), accompanied by the project management, briefed the Chairman about progress on the project. Consequent upon the permission accorded by IRSA for closure of Tunnel No.5,

construction activities are being carried out simultaneously at five sites of T5 including intake, power house and switch yard. Electricity generation from the project is scheduled for July 2025 with completion of its first unit. Unit No.2 and 3 are likely to be completed in August and September 2025 respectively, it was further briefed.



T5 is being constructed on Tunnel No. 5 of Tarbela Dam with approved PC-I of US$ 807 million. World Bank is providing US$ 390 million, while Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) is providing US$ 300 million for construction of the project. Cumulative generation capacity of the project stands at 1530 MW with three generating units of 510 MW each.

The project will provide 1.347 billion units of green, clean and low-cost hydel electricity to the National Grid on the average every year. With completion of T5, installed capacity at Tarbela Dam will rise from 4888 MW to 6418 MW.

Indus River diverted at Dasu hydropower project site​

Stage-I of the project likely to start electricity generation in 2026

Indus River was successfully diverted following the completion of one of the two diversion tunnels at the under-construction Dasu hydropower project in Kohistan District, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

Instead of its natural course, the river is now flowing through a 1.33-kilometre (Km) long diversion tunnel with a 20-metre (m) width and 23-m height.

Consequently, construction activities have been initiated on the starter dam, leading toward the construction of the main dam of the Dasu hydropower project.

The diversion of the mighty river was witnessed by the general manager and project director of the project, representatives of contractors and consultants, along with a number of engineers and workers.

Meanwhile, Water and Power Development Authority (Wapda) Chairman Lt General (retd) Sajjad Ghani congratulated the project management on achieving this milestone.

The diversion system of the Dasu hydropower project comprises two tunnels – tunnel A and tunnel B. Of these, the latter is complete, which has the discharge capacity, sufficient to divert the water from Indus River during the current lean-flows season.

The 1.5-km long tunnel A, with a 20-m width and 23-m height, will also be ready by mid-April this year to cater to the increased water flows during the high-flow season.

The project is a vital component of the least-cost, green and clean energy generation plan of WAPDA.

The 4320 MW-Dasu hydropower project is planned to be completed in two stages.

At present, WAPDA is constructing its stage-I with an installed generation capacity of 2160 MW and annual energy generation of 12 billion units and is likely to start electricity generation in 2026.

The 2160 MW stage-II, when implemented, will also provide nine billion units to the national grid.
On the completion of both stages, Dasu will become a project with the highest annual energy generation in Pakistan (ie 21 billion units per annum on average).
