In Iran we have the same problem. Actually Iran has the largest brain drain in the world!
Put yourself in their shoes. Imagine a kid growing up with nothing and then being given the opportunity to go and study/work in the USA.
We all have the brain power in that region but no will.

Im assuming "Nustian" is the top tech institute....
Would be great if someone could could create a thread about great schools in Pakistan....

I would say the above are in the top tier CS schools - I am not ranking them with respect to each other. I would just put them in the same "top" category. You also have CS at a number of public universities and other schools which I would rank a notch below the list above.

If so, it seems that the trend of private institutions dominating the higher education market falls in line with that of primary and secondary edu in Pakistan....

I have a bunch of friends in the US that studied at Lyceum and Karachi Grammar (O-Level schools), however I have yet to see a product of a Pakistani Public school in a renowned university in the US....
Actually, I feel like the trend in Pak and India is the same, minus some Govt based higher edu universities in India that cater to certain sectors such as tech, business and Law that tend to be the top schools in those spectrums...

This 'insignificant' did his SSc and HSc from an Urdu medium School/College; did his BSc from Government Degree College Quetta (one of the worst College), and MSc from Balochistan University (one of the worst Pakistani Universities). During his MSc, this 'insignificant' published seven full length research papers in the international journals of high repute (first ever was in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene) which is a record. As a result, this 'insignificant' was offered a position in The Aga Khan Medical University (among the best Pakistani Universities). During his fifteen or so years long career (started from 1996), this 'insignificant' has won some twenty awards, eleven alone during his PhD, again a record. There are four patents, twenty two research papers and two NIH research grants worth US$500,000/year for three years and active collaborations with folks at UC Berkeley, Duke, and UMass on this 'insignificant's' credit. Presently, this 'insignificant' is serving as an Assistant Professor in the Emory University, GA which is called the Harvard of the South.

This is not true. NUST, Air University, UET and GIKI are all government funded, with gov-appointed boards to manage them. LUMS has received significant GoP donations and while the governing board is independent, they take GoP input very seriously. One incident from a couple of years ago comes to mind...

I am 'insignificant' because I am still only a Research Assist. Prof which means, I am basically paying myself my salary from my grants and do not have a tenured position. At my place there are number of people of about the same age group against who's CVs, mine dwarfs. We are talking about competition here, its simply cut throat.

^^^ I never knew everything is so green in Pakistan; I wonder why almost everyday I receive 3-5 CVs from Pakistani graduates who show interest to work here. I have not visited Pakistan is last three years, maybe things have changed, maybe family, friends, and colleagues back in Pakistan have been telling me fake stories.

It is tough going but certainly not hopeless.
There are many bright young people here and they do work in most of the private sector and some in government run setups as well.

You shall always get CVs but that does not mean everybody wants to run away from Pakistan.
It is partly because the competition is very tough and this coupled with our population growth makes people explore the markets abroad as well, no harm in that.

People usually do spend some years abroad but many come back and that is a strength because it adds certain value back to the country of origin.

Almost 1/3rd of my batch at NUST went abroad for Masters or PHD and some of them have returned and setup base in Pakistan, whereas others still have plans to come back and start some small venture in Pakistan after getting more experience.

Of the rest that remained behind, many were amongst the top students and have landed reasonable jobs in Pakistan with quite a healthy mix of international exposure as well.
A few have started their own business like designing and manufacturing small scale electronic and telecommunication equipment.

It is not all doom and gloom, though it is not rosy...but nothing in life is trouble free.

Nust is the name of university. Nustians its students.

This effort has nothing to do with the greatness or the nationalistic attitude of the people involved. These are eleven 'STUDENTS' who are working on this as an 'ACADEMIC RESEARCH PROJECT', something 'MANDATORY' to get their degrees. After the completion or required minimal progress on this project, they'll get their degrees and move on simple as that. In the absolute absence of Government or private-sector support, these project are bound to remain in the Theses or dissertation books of the students and forgotten soon. I have personally seen the library of NED University full of such ideas, with considerable progress made and now eating dust.

Well dear yes. you are a to some extent highlighting the truth. But we are trying to change things. Now we are trying to improve and modify the projects made by our seniors.

In fact now many constituent universities of Nust have started Final year projects which continue for 3-4 years. Each year new students come and are assigned a particular job. Like this one

The end product is thus available to the market ( as it is mature enough). And i know many such stories.
