Hungarian premier accuses US of meddling in Central Europe
The Hungarian prime minister accuses the United States of interfering in Central Europe, saying Washington is dragging other countries into its conflict with Russia.
“The United States does not simply interfere, but is an active participant in the internal political life of Central European countries,” Prime Minister Viktor Orban said during a television interview on Tuesday.
The Hungarian premier also highlighted tensions between the US and Russia over the conflict in Ukraine, relating them to Cold War-like conditions.
“They want to draw us into a conflict that we cannot come out of well… We have to stay out of it,” Orban noted.
He also said that Washington seeks to have influence in Hungary, and that the recent US entry ban on six officials over allegations of corruption was just a “cover story”.
Earlier this month, US Senator John McCain described Orban as a “neo-fascist dictator”.
In October, Washington slapped an entry ban on six Hungarian officials over alleged corruption.
The US and its allies accuse Moscow of sending troops into eastern Ukraine in support of the pro-Russian forces. Russia, however, denies the accusation.
Orban has recently voiced objection to European Union and US sanctions imposed on Russia because of the conflict in Ukraine. He said the EU has harmed itself economically with the sanctions.
