TEHRAN, Iran (CNN) -- Hundreds of demonstrators angry over recent presidential election results gathered in a public square Monday in Iran's capital city, despite a stern warning by Iran's Revolutionary Guard.

Riot police and Basij militia dispersed large crowds from congregating in Haft-e Tir and arrested at least eight people, eyewitnesses said.

This comes as the guard warned that it would meet protesters who "disturb the peace and stand up to security forces" with a strong response.

Internet postings on Twitter, Facebook, and an Iranian opposition leader's Web site mentioned a 4 p.m. (7:30 a.m. ET) vigil for Neda -- the young female protester who became a rallying cry and a symbol for the opposition after her death was caught on camera.

It is unclear, however, if the people were at the square for a vigil. Signs and banners about Neda and candles have not been seen.

The Basij, a volunteer paramilitary force that takes orders from the Revolutionary Guard, cleared a pedestrian overpass near the square as two choppers were seen hovering overhead. Most stores around the square were closed with some guarding against damage by erecting steel fences on their windows.

In one incident, a Basiji told a woman who wanted to sit in the park that she had to leave because of security concerns.

"What is the security issue with just sitting in the park?" she asked. And the Basiji pushed her way from the area

Why are these guys inviting trouble into their own country? They directly playing for the enemy which will end up as blunder. Do they not see the situation in Iraq and afghan? :hitwall:

Probably because of things like this.

Statistics provided by the candidates, who claim more than 100% of those eligible have cast their ballot in 80-170 cities are not accurate -- the incident has happened in only 50 cities," Kadkhodaei said.

Guardian Council: Over 100% voted in 50 cities

They had turnouts for the election exceed 100% in 50 cities. They have every right to be mad when things like this happen.

You answer your own question Al-zakir.

Because it is better to live one day as a lion than a thousand years as a sheep.
They thought they could vote for change, a little freedom, a job freedom from the harrasment of the Basij. Instead they discovered the mullahs are happy to let them play at democracy but have no intention of letting anyone but thier chosen candidate win.

The Basij and guards have guns and tanks the people have faith and patience and now martyrs.

The elections were fair...

But CNN or Fox won't show the rallies by pro-Ahmadinejad supporters!

Having turnout exceed 100% in 50 cities and having two entire provinces exceed 100% turnout is not a fair election. Free elections also allow everyone who has enough support on the ballot, not just those approved by the mullahs.

Analysis of Fraud in Iran

Pollster.com: Roundup: Analyses of Fraud in Iran

In addition to the turmoil and tragedy in Iran over the weekend, there were two new notable analyses of the official turnout, plus one bizarre concession by the ruling Guardian Council. Let's start with a review of the analyses:

* Last week, we pointed to an analysis (pdf) by American political scientist Walter Mebane (explained further here). He used the county and city-level vote data from the two rounds of Iran's 2005 election to try to model the 2009 result. The underlying idea is to see whether the town-by-town variation in Ahmadenijad's vote in 2005 predicts the town-by-town variation in 2009. He found that his model did not "describe" the vote well in 192 of 320 towns and that, in 172 of those, Ahmadenijad's vote looks suspiciously high. [Update: Mebane has updated his analysis based on new ballot box data for 23 of 30 provinces showing "evidence of significant distortions in the vote counts not only for Karroubi and Rezaei but also for Ahmadinejad" - more here].

Sarcasm on
Oh please what is wrong with you people!
Where are your well founded conspiracy theories on all of this?

Just because a few electorates had a bit more than 100% turn out and possibly the elections were rigged so what. Yep, fair election so why complain.

You all know it was a combined effort of the CIA, Mossad and possibly RAW, may be even the UK spooks included. Well the BBC had a telling off so they must be in there somewhere.
You can not tell about the Russians but they may have provided ‘help’ to the bunch of crooks listed above..

Sarcasm off, just in case you don’t notice.

Ever bothered to think that the population is sick of a failed economy, sick of tight controls and want a bit more freedom. Of course not what a thing to think of.

But no you don’t want to think of this. But some of these are the reasons you are fighting the TTP at present: Oppression, strict controls, no freedom, and living in a level of fear.

Tin Foil hats on .. conspiracy afloat again!
:enjoy:

Iran: armed vandals shoot people in Tehran's violence

21:57, June 22, 2009

Tehran's prosecutor general's office said on Monday that some armed vandals opened fire on civilians and killed people in Saturday's violence in Tehran, local English-language Press TV reported.

"A number of Tehrani citizens were shot dead by unknown vandals Saturday night," the office was quoted as saying.

Security forces have arrested an armed man involved in Saturday's riots, the office said, adding that security and intelligence officials are currently probing into the identity of the individual whose photo was published and broadcast by news agencies.

According to Press TV, Iran's police have arrested 457 people in the post-election violence that erupted Saturday in Tehran despite warnings against illegal gatherings.

Thirteen people were killed in clashes between Iranian police and "terrorist groups" on Saturday.

Turbulence has overshadowed Tehran following the disputed presidential election on June 12. On Saturday, Iran's police used tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators at a main square of Tehran in the latest violent clash between protestors and security forces.

On June 13, Iran's Interior Minister Sadeq Mahsouli said incumbent President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad won 62.63 percent of the total ballots on June 12, while his main rival Mir-Hossein Mousavi got 33.75 percent.

After the official declaration, Mousavi protested "strongly" the "obvious violations" in Iran's presidential election. He also appealed to the Guardian Council for the cancellation of the election results.

Mousavi's supporters have participated in massive rallies in Tehran and other cities over the past days.

Iran arrests 5 European spies

08:37, June 23, 2009

Iran's security forces have arrested five European spies, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Monday.

Iranian security forces identified and arrested five European spies during the Saturday unrest in Tehran, the report said.

"According to the dispatched reports, two German, one British and two French spies have been arrested during the unrest in Tehran on Saturday," Fars said without elaborating the details.

In a statement released by Iran's Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) on Monday, Western countries were warned not to support the rioters in Iran.

Since the eruption of a series of political protests against the results of Iran's presidential elections, Iran has incessantly accused the Westerners of interfering in Iran's internal affairs.

Mousavi's supporters have participated in several massive rallies in Tehran and other cities over the past days. The rallies have resulted in the death of a number of civilians and injury of several others.

On Monday, Iran's police announced that they have arrested 457 people in the post-election violence that erupted Saturday in Tehran despite warnings against illegal gatherings.

It's not really a surprise that China is in favor of Ahmadinejad. They want stability in Iran so that the oil keeps flowing. The truth be known, they probably don't care who is in control of the Iranian government as long as the oil keep flowing, Right now though they see Khamenei and Ahmadinejad as the best way to keep the oil flowing.

I hope Iranian people are able to correct the accidental blunder they committed in a religious frenzy so many years ago.

Giving full power for all time to illiterate mullahs - BAD IDEA.

How can an Indian accuse China on the basis of Sino-Iranian oil deal?

Ahmadinijad is a patriot. Indians now have joined Americans to spread anti Ahmadinijad propaganda and destabilize Iran. Iranians must see the true color of India.

I know I am talking to an NRI.

Please first ask your fellow national Twain not to derail the thread since it was Twain who was trying to malign the image of China by bringing China unnecessarily in this discussion, before lecturing me.

Whatever is going on in Iran is not protest, but riot. And please see the video below to see how CIA is making all these trouble. Please see also that it not Iran police, rather rioters who are beating Ahmadinijad supporters open in the street.
