China Focus: Military training brawl in central China spurs online outrage

CHANGSHA, Aug. 27 (Xinhua) -- A brawl between military training instructors and a cohort of high school students in central China has made a splash online and drawn a wave of debate among Chinese netizens.

The situation escalated after the local government required the withdrawal of all the military training instructors for Grade One students in Huangcang Middle School of Longshan County, Hunan Province.

Two local armed forces officials were sacked and the teacher implicated in the case was temporarily removed from his post following the incident, the local publicity department said in a statement on Tuesday night.

A total of 42 people, including 40 students, were hurt in a fight that occurred around 4:30 p.m. Sunday. It began when a female student argued with one of the instructors, according to the statement.

Following the quarrel, the military instructors were tough on students, causing outrage and leading to a physical fight between them. The head teacher was attacked during the chaos.

Students later vented their anger by smashing classroom doors and windows, cutting their hands and hurting themselves.

But Beijing News offered a different version of the story. The newspaper quoted an eye-witness saying one of the instructors "joked" with a female student, causing anger from other students.

According to the newspaper, the instructor physically punished the angry students and called on other instructors to beat the teacher, who was trying to stop the punishment.

Pictures on Sina Weibo show students' hands in blood-stained bandages and a female student crying in what appears to be a clinic. Doctors are seen dressing wounded students.

The story generated headlines on the Internet. A post about the case on microblog Sina Weibo has been forwarded more than 14,000 times as of 10 p.m. Tuesday, drawing a flurry of scathing comments. Many lashed out at the military trainers for being too brutal. Others, however, said not all military trainers are like that, and people should not jump to conclusions.

China has seen a host of incidents during military training sessions in high schools and middle schools. Earlier this month, a female student in the northeastern Liaoning Province jumped to her death because she was punished for not standing properly during military training.

In 2008, a military trainer in the southern metropolis of Guangzhou was reported to have grabbed a junior school student's head and hit her against a wall 50 times simply because she was talking during meals.

1. PLA NCO .
2. Local Reservist

In this case, the high school hired local reservists as military trainers to tain their students, and some trainers drink wine at lunch (illegality). Then students and several trainers faught during military trainning at afternoon, the students complaint trainers abuse them, the trainers complaint students didn't respect them and hit their colleague ... Both studnets and trainers don't like each other so THEY FIGHT !

Vietnamese troops have very good principal.

I have said in this case they r local reservists, not PLA NCO. As same as others, there'r bad guys in the country.

I dunno. it's probably common though just some hazing.
of course they don't dare move. move or fight back and you are going to some kicks to the head and ribs.

Russia does it as well.

is it a regular training of torturing ? victims dare not to move

I heard that Chinese students have it rough. They camp out 1 month in the barrack before going to school to study (university students, I think), living like soldiers with curfew, physical exercises, punishment, etc. Well, compare to us, rolling a few rounds on the dirt, assembling the AK/SKS, listening to nonsense stuffs, then go home for a warm bath and nice meal, VNese students sure didn't take this seriously. That's what I experienced a few year back. Not sure how about now.

I had read news and saw pics, PLA NCO drink wine during mission = suicide in PLA Army.
A formal PLA NCO won't do such stupid thing, drinking wine is a very trouble mistake for soldier in PLA, they will let u return home.

I experienced two military training during my high school and university time, of course i know how PLA trainer looks like.

VN also have military training course in high school too, but we havent heard any serious problem yet. But it may happen in the future, who knows.

But in general, Vietnamese troops was trained to brutally hit to active enemies only.
Persuading is much more popular method to trainees.

While there is a possibility that this also happens elsewhere in China, someone was a little "noisy" that this incident eventually became news.

Persuading is much more popular method to trainees.

Scolding is more like it. I understand that new recruits have to passed a rough time when they start their training. The purpose is to make them discipline, obey orders, do everything precisedly as they are told. In US movie about military, we often see the instructors shout and insult greenhorns. It's like a procedure in the army.

But the students are not soldiers. Their jobs are not to fight, they only there to study the way of the soldier, to be able to quickly adapt to the soldier life in case they are conscripted. Either ways the trainers apply the same method they use on recruits on students are a bad move.
