In just seven weeks, the new year seems to have become troublingly old for India. Three old issues with all their upsetting associations – caste, colonialism and potentially seditious dissent – are back on the news agenda. They’ve restarted some very unpleasant conversations and in such a corrosive way that there is a sense of a country deeply polarised and almost at war with itself.
In January, the suicide of a lower caste Hindu doctoral student triggered nationwide protests as well as knee-jerk official defensiveness. Last week, India’s rejection of Facebook’s free, basic internet service raised questions about the implications of its ingrained fear of foreign dominance. And a row over the right to public dissent is rumbling on. It started just days ago with a police crackdown on the campus of a leading university in the capital New Delhi.
All three events are linked in a way that goes beyond being newsworthy. They have the same pathology. All are deeply embedded in the Indian psyche, sickening the body politic and rendering debate unfit for purpose. It may be fair to say that the hold of these three issues has never really been meaningfully discussed with complete candour, in any way that would acknowledge the real difficulties of laying them to rest.
Consider the snowballing controversy over allegedly seditious activity, especially on university campuses. Last week, the head of the student union of Delhi’s Jawaharlal Nehru University was arrested for sedition, under a law that dates to British rule. This university is sometimes described as an Indian Berkeley, with a proud tradition of left-wing debate on a range of issues such as communalism, social marginalisation, market forces, nuclear disarmament and the role of religion in politics.
The student leader’s alleged offence was to organise a protest against the hanging three years ago of Afzal Guru, a Kashmiri separatist who was convicted and put to the death over a 2001 plot to attack India’s parliament. Guru always denied plotting the attack and his execution triggered protests in Jammu and Kashmir.

Some Indian commentators criticised the government’s response as “disproportionate” and far more insidious than an attempt to crush dissent; it “wants to crush thinking”. JNU research scholar Saib Bilaval wrote that it was “the othering of liberalism”, making it “unpatriotic” to profess liberal views. Students on other campuses have since spoken up about the right to free expression and an editorial headlined “Do not disagree” in the Indian Express newspaper thundered that the message of the JNU arrest sits uneasily with India’s overwhelmingly youthful demographic.
There has been a sharp rise in the number of sedition cases pointing to lower tolerance of dissent. More damagingly, it indicates an incomplete examination of the nature and mechanics of nation-building. In the 69th year of its independence from British rule, some might justifiably say that India seems less confident about the limits – and merits – of democratic criticism and the role this plays in citizens’ compact with the state. The JNU row will subside, but the issue won’t go away.

Finally, colonialism. There are differing views worldwide on net neutrality, the principle that internet service providers should enable access to all content and applications regardless of the source. But when Indian regulators banned Facebook’s “Free Basics”, a programme controversially providing free mobile internet in poor countries, it was hard not to see it as a sign of a general anxiety about unfair foreign competition with the intention to dominate.
Software billionaire Nandan Nilekani, co-founder of Bangalore-based IT group Infosys, recently admitted as much. “There is this real rising fear in India about digital colonialism,” he said.

Idle hands and idle minds + lots of free time and axe to grind = anti-nationalism (because what is more provocative and exciting than that for a student to get involved in).
So countering them brought bogey man Pakistan into it from the regular quarters (these chaps were after all shouting pro-Pak slogans to get some extra kick out of it) Hafiz Saeed or someone has also made some comment on twitter supporting this lot's stance (basically that India should be destroyed because of the so called injustice against Afzal Guru etc etc.)
Its business as usual for most part, except neither side seems to want to back down on who is right and gets to have the last word regarding free speech vs sedition.
BJP (central govt) for its part for some strange reason has not arrested the main culprits...they better do so soon and quick otherwise they are also going to look quite hypocritical for arresting one student leader (who was not part of the main hate speech crowd) and one professor (who I feel deserves it, but why stop at him?).
My dear friend . there are reasons for which leftist parties are hated in India ( except by Übermensch in kerala and WB ) !! Also the protest is turning in to as per a common Indian voter is " Anti national" ! now there are very few things which can overcome
caste factors in india and that is Strong Surge of nationalism.
Now combine these factors : Common voters aversion of : Left parties, Anti national protest, Separatism and Hidden Anti Hinduism .. and voila u got the ideal voter base and suitable conditions for Mr Modi brand of politics. Also this opportunity is fresh lease of life for the core voters and supporters of Mr Modi.
Do not get fooled by the overwhelming presence of left leaning 'Intellectuals" screaming their heart out on English TV Media.. ! Most of India dont giver a damn !

jnu has always been among the few universities in india where internationalism and socialism is in the general atmopshere, otherwise in most of the universities and colleges it is people doing 1 year to 7 years of ridiculous "education" and joining the extreme capitalism of india and become wage-slaves ( jobniks ).
since modi becoming the prime minister in 2014, the bjp party began its anti-progressives agenda in every type of institution, whether it is the ftii ( film and television institute of india - from where naseeruddin shah and om puri have been students - search for the recent strike by ftii students ) or the ichr ( indian council for historical research ) or trying to suppress progressives in universities like jnu.
and as ever, for these sanghis/nationalists, the easiest way of getting public opinion against someone is declaring the target to be a pakistani agent and thundering to them "go to pakistan !!"

Every muslim in the country rejects 2 nation theory. From 2004 to 2014 Congress ruled the country. In 2008, Mumbai attacks when innocent people died, BJP didn't played politics or created any controversy. Congress was good in first term, in second term economic growth was slowing down. I started taking interest in politics in 2014 when BJP was elected, and i believe LK Advani was second best candidate for PM after Modi for BJP. Since BJP came to power, it changed a lot of policies (or tried to) but was always blindly opposed by Congress. Every single move by BJP is opposed by Congress. Now either BJP or Congress, don't want nation to progress. Modi might be the PM but he is not a dictator, there are a lot of people with him who make decisions. Ofcourse he won't be right every single time, but won't be wrong every single time either (as suggested by Congress). In desperation to come into power again, Congress has used everything, religious politics, caste politics, farmer politics, poor man politics. The thing is whether whosoever is in power, country will progress, slower or faster or whatever. Congress had chance to remain in power but they wasted 2010-2014, had lots of scams and scandals too. And now they don't seem to enjoy India progressing under BJP. India is young country with lots of young population, and in the name of freedom of expression and questioning, Congress is making fools out of them just to come into power. Every straight forward issue is diverted something else. The kind of desperation Congress is ugly as hell. It makes one wonder what are they upto. If BJP failed to deliver what it promised then i don't see any reason why they won't be thrown out of power, people know what they want, only if Congress understands this and keep patience. But since they are desperate, it makes one believe that BJP is on right track.
If shouting anti state slogan under a political movement (even if at college level) is freedom of speech, then killing those dheads is legal for me. And if you say this is nationalism and anti human, then i ask you to go sail to Australia, tell them its your earth its your right to live anywhere you wish, and if they don't kill you, change my name. Jungle rule ruled back then, jungle rule rules today as well.
