Huawei Introduces Cyber Security Top 100 Requirements for Selecting Suppliers

Huawei showcases latest security solutions at 26th ISF Annual World Congress

ATLANTA, Nov. 8, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Huawei today introduced its cyber security Top 100 requirements that organizations should consider when assessing suppliers' capabilities to provide end-to-end cyber security. At the 26th Information Security Forum (ISF) Annual World Congress held in Atlanta, Huawei also showcased its latest security solutions and best practices that help businesses protect against cyber threats in today's connected world.

At the Congress, Mr. Antonio Ierano, Cyber Security Expert for Huawei Enterprise Business Group, shared his insights during a keynote speech entitled "The Story behind Huawei's Cyber Security Approach". Mr. Ierano in his speech stated, "There is a lack of internationally recognized cyber security standards and regulations in the ICT industry and among governments worldwide. Huawei is committed to encouraging governments and the ICT industry to develop and adopt practical cyber security standards. Based on extensive research, we have developed the Top 100 requirements that organizations should consider when assessing suppliers' end-to-end cyber security capabilities."

The cyber security Top 100 requirements cover 11 key areas: strategy governance and control; standards and processes; laws and regulations; human resources; research and development; verification; third-party supplier management; manufacturing; delivering services securely; issue, defect and vulnerability resolution; and finally audit. Each area details a number of requirements organizations should consider exploring with their suppliers and the rationale behind these requirements.

Commenting on the importance, "The Top 100 requirements mark Huawei's first step towards cooperating with governments and the entire industry to accelerate the development of practical cyber security standards. We look forward to the Top 100 concept becoming an integral part of an organization's cyber security approach and helping the ICT industry drive greater improvements in product and service security design, development and deployment," said Mr. Ierano.

At the Congress, Huawei also showcased three of its latest security solutions, which help financial and telecommunication organizations as well as governments address ever-increasing cyber security threats. These three solutions include:

  • Huawei Big Data Security Analytics Solution supports the association analysis of massive volumes of key data traffic including logs, contexts and external intelligence information to detect and flag potential risks in a timely manner. The solution can also block, trace source of, and eliminate advanced persistent threats (APTs), preventing proliferation.
Huawei Anti-DDoS Solution provides a cloud mitigation service through on-premise distributed denial of service (DDoS) detection and mitigation devices with terabit-level performance. The solution also integrates the DDoS protection resources of telecom operators and medium- to large-scale data centers across the globe to provide real-time analysis and response to DDoS attacks. Once the DDoS attack is detected, the solution will provide mitigation services through the nearest scrubbing center.

  • Huawei Cloud Data Center Security Solution provides USG6000V series virtual services gateway with comprehensive security functions to help customers build end-to-end security capabilities with support of Agile Controller or other Software-defined networking (SDN) management platforms.

A super fast, super efficient mobile network is in the works for the swanky new Telus headquarters in downtown Vancouver.

Telus teamed up with Chinese technology company Huawei to create a “5G Living Lab” at the recently opened Telus Garden. The partnership was announced when B.C. Premier Christy Clark visited Huawei’s headquarters in Shenzen last week.

The Living Lab will be an experiment for a converged fibre-wireless network. It’s one test in the worldwide attempt to develop a 5G telecommunications network that, when it’s eventually built, will have significantly higher speed and better efficiency than smartphones operating on 3G, 4G or LTE networks.

In a news release, Huawei said it would make a “significant” investment to design, test and deploy new technologies in the Vancouver building.

Telus recently announced a $1-billion expansion to its fibre optic network in Vancouver. The goal is to converge this network with wireless networks, according to the news release.

Apple Rushes to Court to Stop Supplier BYD Precision from Gaining an Order in China to stop iPhone 6 Plus Production

Apple filed a 'Petition for Order Compelling Arbitration and for Injunctive Relief Pending Arbitration' against BYD Precision Manufacturing Co. Ltd and BYD Company Limited on October 29th. Ever since that time, additional filings have been flying into court fast and furious with both redacted and unredacted exhibits and various other motions. Just yesterday the case was reassigned to Judge Hon. Richard Seeborg. The case involves certain iPad mini and iPhone 6 Plus (and presumably iPhone 6s Plus) products using antenna technology from BYD. BYD is trying to stop Apple's production of the noted products in Chinese Courts which would cause great harm to Apple and their reputation. Apple is racing against the clock to stop the patent infringement lawsuits and the orders to cease production in particular due to a Master agreement that BYD signed which allows Apple and their suppliers to use their patented technology.

Nature of the Petition

The following is from Apple's filing with Northern District of California Court San Francisco (with emphasis from Patently Apple):

"In or around June 2014, Petitioner Apple (a United States company) and Respondent BYD Precision (a Chinese company) entered into an "Amended & Restated Master Development and Supply Agreement Between Apple and BYD Company Limited," dated June 3, 2014 (the "2014 MDSA"). The 2014 MDSA amends and restates an earlier "Apple Inc. Master Development and Supply Agreement," dated May 19, 2011, entered into by and between Apple and BYD (the "2011 MDSA" and, together with the 2014 MDSA, the "MDSAs").

Under the 2014 MDSA, BYD and BYD Precision agreed, inter alia, not to assert any claims for infringement of intellectual property rights against, among others, Apple or Apple's related entities, distributors, or suppliers. BYD Precision also agreed to guarantee BYD's adherence to the agreement not to assert such patent infringement claims.

In or around April 2015, in direct contravention of this express agreement not to assert intellectual property claims against Apple or Apple's partners, BYD filed twin suits in the Shenzhen Intermediate People's Court (the "Chinese Patent Litigation"), alleging that the antennae in the iPhone 6 Plus and certain iPad Mini products infringed two BYD patents.

BYD named as defendants not only one of Apple's indirect wholly owned subsidiaries, Apple Electronic Products Commerce (Beijing) Co., Ltd., Yitian Shenzhen Branch ("Apple Beijing"), but also four of Apple's direct and indirect Chinese suppliers, and one of Apple's Chinese distributors. In these suits, BYD seeks an order requiring all six defendants to both cease allegedly infringing conduct and destroy allegedly infringing products.

As a result of the Chinese Patent Litigation, on or around October 23, 2015, Apple commenced an arbitration against BYD and BYD Precision pursuant to the arbitration agreement in the 2014 MDSA.The broad arbitration agreement requires that all disputes arising out of or relating to the 2014 MDSA be finally resolved by arbitration in San Francisco under the Rules of Arbitration of the International Chamber of Commerce ("ICC").

Apple brings this petition pursuant to the Federal Arbitration Act ("FAA"), 9 U.S.C. § 1 et seq., including the FAA's provisions incorporating the Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Arbitral Awards ("New York Convention"), 9 U.S.C. § 201 et seq., for (1) an order compelling BYD and BYD Precision to arbitrate the parties' dispute under the 2014 MDSA in accordance with the 2014 MDSA's arbitration agreement, and (2) provisional relief in aid of the arbitration and, in particular, to preserve the status quo pending a final determination of the parties' dispute by an arbitral tribunal.

This Court has jurisdiction in relation to Apple's petition to compel arbitration pursuant to 9 U.S.C. § 203. In accordance with 9 U.S.C. §§ 4 and 206, this Court may direct that arbitration take place in accordance with an agreement in writing by parties to settle their disputes by international arbitration, where one of the parties fails, neglects, or refuses to arbitrate under that agreement. The 2014 MDSA contains an express written agreement to arbitrate disputes arising thereunder. The dispute between Apple and the Respondents concerning BYD's non-assert obligations and BYD Precision's obligations to guarantee BYD's performance of its non-assert obligations fall under the arbitration agreement in the 2014 MDSA.

Ancillary to its power under the FAA to compel arbitration, this Court may issue preliminary injunctive relief to preserve the meaningfulness of arbitration by preventing a party from irreversibly altering the status quo. Any award in the ICC Arbitration may be rendered ineffectual without appropriate injunctive relief from this Court.

Accordingly, if BYD is not prevented immediately, and pending a final determination in the arbitration, from continuing the Chinese Patent Litigation, Apple and Apple's supply chain may suffer serious disruption. Such disruption will irreparably harm Apple, Apple's reputation and goodwill, and the millions of consumers and businesses who demand Apple's high-end innovative products."

Apple vs. BYD Docket Overview (Click on Image Below to Enlarge)

Later in the filing it's revealed that BYD holds two patents in China in respect to Super-Energy Beam Induced Deposition ("SBID") technology which is at the heart of the BYD lawsuits against Apple in China. Though in the bigger picture, BYD holds more than 12,000 Chinese patents.

The filing also notes that "BYD and its subsidiaries are engaged in three major businesses: (i) automobiles, including traditional fuel-powered vehicles and new-energy vehicles [including electric vehicles]; (ii) handsets, including component production and assembly; and (iii) rechargeable batteries and photovoltaic technology, including lithium-ion, nickel, lithium ferrous phosphate, and solar battery products.

Upon information and belief, BYD and its subsidiaries also maintain a significant presence in the United States, including corporate offices in both Los Angeles and the greater Chicago area, and an electric bus factory in Lancaster, California.

BYD maintains its North America headquarters in Los Angeles, California. BYD, directly and/or through its subsidiaries, designs and manufactures vehicles in its California facilities, and in recent years has publicly announced the expansion of its California presence through the execution of contracts with California-based purchasers and through the hiring of additional employees in California."

Apple officially filed their "PETITION FOR ORDER COMPELLING ARBITRATION AND FOR INJUNCTIVE RELIEF PENDING ARBITRATION" on October 29, 2015 in San Francisco. The Presiding Judge, who was assigned the case yesterday, is noted as being the Honorable Judge Richard Seeborg.

Huawei Mate 8 Scores A Staggering 89,630 Points On AnTuTu

November 9, 2015 - Written By Kristijan Lucic

Ever since Huawei announced the Mate S handset back at IFA, we’ve been wondering if the company plans to announce their Mate 8 phablet. Well, the company’s CEO has confirmed quite recently that the Mate 8 is coming, and we’ve seen quite a few leaks and rumors regarding this smartphone thus far. Huawei has even released a teaser image on the company’s Weibo (Chinese social network) account, confirming that the Mate 8 will launch on November 26th. The phone has popped up on GFXBench quite recently, and it has just been benchmarked on AnTuTu as well, read on.

The Huawei Mate 8 (NXT-AL10) has popped up on AnTuTu with a staggering score of 89.630, which is actually the highest score on AnTuTu to date. The Mate 8 will be fueled by the HiSilicon Kirin 950 64-bit octa-core SoC which has been announced a couple of days ago in China. According to previously leaked info, the Mate 8 will feature a 1080p or QHD display (5.7 or 6-inch one) along with 3 or 4GB of RAM (both variants are possible). As already mentioned, the Kirin 950 will fuel this phablet, and the device will be made out of metal. You can expect a fingerprint scanner to be a part of this package as well (quite probably a rear-facing one), and ‘Force Touch’ has also been mentioned in several leaks. Huawei has already announced a Force Touch variant of the Mate S, so they definitely have the technology to make this happen. Anyhow, the Mate 8 is also said to sport a 21-megapixel snapper on the back, and an 8-megapixel camera up front. The phone will ship in 32 and 64GB internal storage variants, while the 128GB one is also a possibility.

The Huawei Mate 8 will, much like its predecessor, be a high-end phablet. The Ascend Mate 7 is still one of the better-looking devices out there, and the Mate 8 has big shoes to fill. As already mentioned, the Mate 8 will be announced on November 26th, which is actually quite soon. Judging by the leaked benchmarks, the Mate 8 will be a force to be reckoned with, but it remains to seen what will the device look like and perform in real life. Stay tuned, we’ll report back as soon as some additional info pops up.
