Other steps which can be taken such as

- Smart cities should have bicycle lanes on all streets, clearly marked on roads and boards
- Ample Bicycle parking spaces should be made available
- Even other cities should be encouraged to use bicycles
- Schools should be asked to encourage students to use bicycles
- For example, all girl students in India should be given bicycles

that won't work in india because of the huge number of criminal-minded and undisciplined people... as long as the central government allows a wrong vehicle like the motorcycle or even private cars, the wrong people will use them in crimes and in being inconsiderate.

at present there is no check on the behavior of those given license for vehicles which is why most criminals and the callous have access or ownership to some vehicle.

so one cannot have this and the other... it should be one or the other.

- India needs to introduce computerized writing exams for 2, 4 and other wheel drives. The results should be declared by computer and not manual checking, to avoid bribes and corruption. the advantage of this will be, that learning book will stress on importance of bicycles, usage, lane system, value human life, etc etc similar as to in EU now.
- No licence unless you pass this exam.

India also needs to build a vehicle data base, get rid of vehicles which are more than 25 yrs old for one time. Get all vehicles + 2 wheels registered in national database.

Every time you buy or sell a car, it should be made mandatory to be done in front of govt appointed representative who will issue Receipt + Car paper in new owners name.
This will ensure the database is maintained and edited on real time basis.

other than the extreme capitalism of traditional indian society, the renewed consumerist capitalism of the last 20 years has contributed to india being perhaps the most polluting country of the world... cell phones, dogs, mba colleges, alcohol places, gym memberships for females, neo-religious places, useless software companies ( 99 percent of software companies in india ), wedding houses, wedding planners, one-time wedding clothes, high-definition tv's, private and interest-taking banks, useless engineering colleges etc... you know those elements... all these must be abolished at the earliest.

the underlined being the primary... there was a tragic case in bombay in mid-2015 of a young lady who was hit by a vehicle on a busy highway and was lying there for quite some time and no one helped her... she died in the hospital...

PSI Kishori Mane of Vanrai police station added, "We reached the spot which is just outside the police station and took Pandya to hospital in an auto rickshaw. Nobody helped her and she was lying on the road for 15 to 20 minutes. An eyewitness informed the police station and ran away after that. We are taking help of the CCTV footage of the area. There is a CCTV installed near the spot, but we are not sure if it is in working condition. We don't have a clue in this case. We have registered a hit-and-run case against unknown people and are investigating the matter further."

these foreign jaunts i presume have been going on since the 50's to gain experience and learn of experiments in various fields... you are right, for our politicians these were just free holidays.

Most of the trees used in the paper industry are replanted for harvesting again..at a later date...the forest cover is not a continually diminishing thing (it is more like a farm). Total strip clearing of trees is also not practiced like it was before (at least here in North America).

The pollution comes more from the actual paper processing itself (depending on the country and its standards)....because it makes no sense for a paper company to think short term and level a huge area of trees without replanting.

We would have lost a ton of forest cover in North America and Northern Europe as a result...a long time ago....which hasn't happened.

In the early years of settlers the forests here suffered horribly due to clearcutting for farms and wood production. This thankfully has since been reversed. However when you walk through what you think is an "old quaint forest untouched by man" you may see an odd stonewall in the middle of nowhere. That stonewall was actually the property line some farmer put up between him and his neighbor 250 years ago when they clearcutted their property. Your quaint old forest actually is relatively new. It's just been allowed to grow again.

Is there a way to control population???
Increase in population means increase in dependence of resources, this in turn depletes our resources faster than it can be produced. If the population is high then we need more petrol and fuel, which also means more cars on the road. Ultimately, population is the root cause of all the problems in the world.

while uncontrolled population growth in the world, especially male, is cause of many things wrong, population by itself need not automatically mean increase or presence of non-commercial private vehicles ( cars, jeeps, motorcycles, scooters, vans )... it was wrong from the start to develop the cheaper private motorcar and the motorcycle... it should be public transport that must solely exist for general transport of people... this will be one of the defining marks of any "smart city".

Well cars are certainly a problem. While there are probably far more cars on the road here as there were say 30 years ago the air is actually much much cleaner. This is due to far more stringent exhaust controls. Gone are the days of thick black diesel soot pouring out of the back of some bus driving by. In the wintertime the snow banks near the bus stops would be black. It was pretty bad. Same deal with cleaners on industrial smoke stacks. Less coal power plants and more nuclear.

So air pollution can be manageable. The air is nice now.
