fortified check-posts, attack heli , better communication between post officer and able to call air support within minutes , quick response teams , with better weapons , and artillery support , proper identification of anyone going in or out of Pakistan , daily 2 shifts of heavy patrol , and mine those areas , which are only used by terrorists .

Divide Afghanistan into Pashtun and non-Pashtun.

Fence it. Thats it! Enough of bullsh*t of it being a Durand Line and Afghan sensitivities about it. We have lives to save here and our lives are dearer than someone else sensitivities.

We must learn to respect life and property. We dont and this is our social disease.

Same as we secure indian border but afpak border hardly can be called border its just a gate with open arms

There are hundred and ten ways to seal a border, but then the question is of monies required to do so. We are a poor country, hence the luxury of unlimited resources is not available. Moreover, Duran Line is not a small patch that can be electrified either. Sealing 2200km plus of mountainous and semi mountainous terrain is not easy to say the least. Pakistan is already working on a trench so seal off the border, mines would also be used. But then this would only be useful in reducing the number of posts guarding the border and that's it. Unless Afg also joins in, there is no permanent solution to this problem.

Mine the whole border with anti personnel and anti vehicle mines.

The insurgency is costing tens of billions to our economy. spending a couple of $billion on border security would only improve our economy.

1. There are laws and principles to be followed to wage a successful COIN op. The vital element is the POPULATION without whose support neither the insurgent nor the counter-insurgent will succeed.

2. Firstly recognize the type of insurgency faced. It is not a revolutionary war. In spite of what the Americans try to project, this is also not an ideological war. It is more of a secessionist civil war conducted as a proxy war remote controlled by CIA of USA and RAW of India. I am not forgetting Afghanistan but I view them also as a proxy/pawn in the hands of USA. Pakistan must recognize this truth to be able to overcome the insurgents.

3. What we are witnessing now is the First Phase of COIN, ie, destruction/expulsion of insurgent forces. Since the measures taken after the brutal killing of school children in Peshawar, this phase is moving towards a successful close. The killing of the children has alienated the insurgents from the local population greatly aiding COIN ops.

4. The Second Phase should see deployment of permanent units in the affected area.It will be a good idea if PA moved some of its static units into the area. That would be emulating the British who had set up Cantts in remote areas to colonialize. FF Centre could be moved to the disturbed area releasing some pressure on a congested Abbottabad.. Similarly Baloch Center could be moved to a remote location in Balochistan. Setup a Mountain Warfare School in the area also stationing an element of SSG.

5. In the Third Phase intimate contact with the population from grassroots to the elite/Maliks. People/families are to be graded white, black and grey. The whites are to be provided extra privileges eventually building up a loyal class through whom to control the population..

6. In the Fourth Phase debunk/trash insurgents ideology through massive psywar/PR campaign. Eradicating the insurgents ideology and re-educating the population to Pakistan's national ideology is vital.

7. In the final / Fifth Phase, through administrative measures do away with tribal exclusivity. No more PAs or identification by Class. All areas are to be amalgamated into the main administrative network of the country. Political parties are to be encouraged to undertake political activity in the area.

8.In all these the Population is the crucial element. They must be won over.

This is what we are missing in the way of thinking of the policy makers and politicians. If spending say USD 10 billion today will result in annual improvement of the economy by say USD 2 billion dollars, cost will be covered in 5 years. Most importantly you cannot put a value to the national economy and the safety and security of the nation and the common man. Even spending USD 20 billion on this is worth spending it.

Agreed.

Economic uplift of the locals will definitely help suppress the insurgency.
You must agree that this region has been the most neglected in Pakistan. All the funds and privileges go to the Maliks/Khans/Nawabs. Hardly and expansion to the infrastructure left by the British. I don't know if the narrow gauge railway line is still narrow? Musharraf had converted some Classified areas in Baluchistan into settled districts. Civilian led govts changed that - obviously under pressure from the Nawabs/Khans. Authorities must target the masses, not the elites so much. The benefits of independence must reach them. Healthcare, education, economic uplift-ment, rule of law, etc must cover this area as all other Pakistanis.
