No it was the intolerant Hindus who even twist their own books to satisfy themselves....they cant accept anything in its original form and want to add their whims in everything...

Dharmic principles are flexible in the sense they advocate pluralistic views about GOD, also they say There are more than one way to reach GOD. Hindus do not follow the holy texts exactly, there is a dharma called Yuga Dharma which is flexible and is changing with times. The Dharma during the times of Ramayana or Mahabharata is not exactly the same as Kalyuga Dharma, that is present times.
There are some basic concepts which are Rigid. Vedas or Upanishads are not changeable, even a single letter is not permitted to change.
And mind you there is always a believer (Hindu) and a non believer (non hindu) in every religion so it was sheer stupidity for some to use this as an attack or victim complex plan!
Same can also be said about Abrahamic religions !!
