LORD MACAULAY was the man who implemented British Education in India in order to create English speaking clerks to serve and generations with deep with inferiority complex to come .

LORD MACAULAY’S ADDRESS TO THE BRITISH PARLIAMENT, 2 FEBRUARY, 1835

I have travelled across the length and breadth of India and I have not seen one person who is a beggar, who is a thief. Such wealth I have seen in this country, such high moral values, people of such calibre, that I do not think we would ever conquer this country, unless we break the very backbone of this nation, which is her spiritual and cultural heritage, and, therefore, I propose that we replace her old and ancient education system, her culture, for if the Indians think that all that is foreign and English is good and greater than their own, they will lose their self-esteem, their native culture and they will become what we want them, a truly dominated nation.

British left us in 1947...after that, it's all been up to us!

Things have changed a lot since 1835. Today's world is all about globalization and English is the language of trade. We cannot survive a billion+ population without outside help unlike in 1835. Also it's not like we go back to our houses and speak english. We still use our own mother tongue. It's a good thing that most indians are multilingual.

Buddy what are you trying to say here? i do not get the point ...
hell we are progressing because of our usage of the english language. most IT and ITES and services related companies are world class because of our education. the british did a lot of wrong in our country but the education and administration and railways are some of their best legacy.

I call BS. Indian society had its share of problems then, just like now. There were many uneducated people then as there are now. There were law and order problems then as there are now. I have read snippets of Indian society in those times in books in local library back home (cant remember which books though - long time back). They paint a picture which is similar to that of present day India.
And dont forget the rivalries between different kingdoms etc. I ask you this, if India was so advanced then, how is that a "lesser" people like the British managed to subdue the whole population?

ps: Oh wait - we Indians didnt have the flag!!!

Did you ever study Indian history and civics?

Yup, didnt think so.

It wasn't exactly british education. It was simply the british language. I don't remember learning about british history in school, unless tectonic forces moved britain in south asia

I think that this claim itself is false. India might have been rich, but I do not think there were ever a situation where there were no beggers. I think wealth would have been confined to selected few. Also I feel the population back then would have been lot less. We were around 30 crorer in 1947 and 1 billion now. I guess back then it should be less then 10 billion, with same land.

British destroyed our ancient excellent education system?what a joke!It was the british who universalised education which were previously restricted only to upper casts. Before the british came ladies of my cast were not allowed to cover their breasts(by upper casts)let alone attain education!

Instead of making cheap comments tell me what you mean by having studied indian history and civics? today India is such a diverse country that in terms of language English is what unites it.

Looks like LORD MACAULAY has travelled only along the grand trunk road.

Is it a billion* or a million

Not really. Language is what divides it. We all have, if not same, a similar culture, all have same gods (Hindus). For muslims, boundaries doesn't matter.

Well you have repeated what i have exactly said. I said

"in terms of language english is what unites it (india)"

to which you replied "language is what divides us"! Hence you have English to solve that problem, just like we have Urdu in Pakistan.
