How did planners design Soviet cities?

I noticed it as well. Instead of 1 old boring design, there seem to be many minor variations but they are all generally old, boring and have many copies of similar designs from outside.

Soviet city design look terrible imo ... no wonder why the Soviet Union collapsed. Either go with really tall skyscraper apartments like in East Asia or suburbs like the United States. No one wants to live in those ugly concrete buildings. For a country that has so much land, you would have thought the Russians could have done a better job with city design lol.

Come on @jamahir while I have to give credit to the equality stuff and giving all the people housing the Communists espoused but this really isnt a great way to live. This is the life people in our poor public housing are subjected to..including the bars on the first floor windows.

Those designs are quite common in Singapore too lol, especially public housing built in the earlier years. Newer public housing are better though.

I agree that the typical USSR housing is terrible. I have seen photos of North Korea's new housing projects in Pyongyang and they too are inspired by the USSR ones, though with better color scheme, heh heh.

About the bars on the first floor windows, every one floor or two floor house in India has bars or grills.

I wish Indian residential areas were as nicely spaced as this. Thomas' kitchen seemed large.

Keep in mind that architects had to fulfill booming city population and each generation of those multistory buildings become less ugly. And keep in mind one more thing - state give you apartment for free, you have more children - they give you bigger apartment. In late 80's they began to build cottage blocks - also for free.
