Hong Kong police have successfully defused a 2,000 pound (900kg) bomb from World War Two, described as the biggest wartime bomb to be found in the city.

More than 2,200 people were evacuated when the bomb was found in a construction site in the city's Happy Valley district on Thursday afternoon.

The AN-M66 bomb contained 1,000 pounds (450kg) of explosives.

The device is believed to have been dropped by the US Navy during WW2, when Japan occupied the then British colony.

Senior bomb disposal officer Jimmy Yuen said the disposal had taken a long time because of "technical problems when drilling holes into the bomb and because of the large amount of explosives inside it".

"Because the explosive inside was very sensitive, we had to cut the shell in a low-temperature environment, so the process took longer than expected," he added.

On Thursday, he had told reporters that the bomb, if it exploded, could affect a radius of up to 10m (30ft) and damage nearby buildings.

Other unexploded bombs from WW2 have been discovered in Hong Kong in the past.

If i am not mistaken they found ww2 bombs in buried London as late as the 80s.

The Japs occupied HK during WW2, how hard is that to understand?
The question is why they bomb the city center and if there were casuaties of civilian for US had no smart bomb then.

Bombers in the January 16 raid came under fierce anti-aircraft fire and attack by fighter planes, which might explain why the bomb landed wide of its target - Taikoo Dockyard. There were 12 US aircraft carriers close to Hong Kong at that time, but only two carried that type of bomb. The bomb probably hit Happy Valley because the bomber had strayed off course.

On that day, two TBM- Avenger bombers carried the payload of 11 2,000-pound bombs over the city. Four were dropped on Taikoo Dockyard, another on Aberdeen docks and one on Kowloon docks. The other five targeted ships. Hundreds of other smaller bombs were dropped on Hong Kong on the same day. Happy Valley had its own significance during wartime, as a Japanese military camp was located on Morrison Hill.

Very graphic description.
It seems like you have personal experience living in that terrifying time :cheesy:

Tell us the reason why we should love the japanese!
I dont know why the people of HK didnt protest and demanded from the japanese for the cost of disruption of their civic livelihoods, loss of business and engaging many civil servants taking the high risk of dismantling the bombs and maintaining orders

We know how heavy handed the US was in WW2, bombing population centers was part of their plans, it is one of the major war crimes the US committed...

Personal experience of WW2? lol glad i wasn't even born during that time. Here's one of Japanese attrocities

St. Stephen's college incident - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Several hours before the British surrendered on Christmas day at the end of the Battle of Hong Kong, Japanese soldiers entered St. Stephen's College, which was being used as a hospital on the front line at the time.[1][2] The Japanese were met by two doctors, Black and Witney, who were marched away, and were later found dead and mutilated.[1][2] They then burst into the wards and bayoneted a number of British, Canadian and Indian wounded soldiers who were incapable of hiding

Japs sure were brave killing wounded soldiers in capable of fighting or hiding.
