Home Minister issues ‘shoot to kill’ orders

KARACHI: Sindh Home Minister, Zulfiqar Mirza Saturday said it is his responsibility to maintain law and order in the province and that it is in this context that he has issued orders of shooting criminals at sight.

Addressing a joint press conference along with leaders of MQM and ANP here at Nine Zero, Zulfiqar Mirza said whether the criminals belong to MQM, PPP or ANP, they will not be spared.

Two killed in Karachi violence

KARACHI: At least two people were killed in an incident of firing in Pirabad and Bukhari colony area of the metropolis, Geo News reported on Saturday.

According to sources, many people were also injured in the incident. The clash erupted when two armed groups resorted to indiscriminate firing. Many small shops, vender stalls were also destroyed in acts of violence.

KARACHI: Nearly half a dozen incidents of arson, looting and ransacking in different parts of the city were reported during the 24 hours ending Friday evening, deepening fears and speculation of ethnic violence, as cited by Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah during the current session of the Sindh Assembly.

In the wee hours of Friday, armed men broke into some shops on Abdul Hasan Ispahani Road and set a couple of them on fire after taking away valuables from inside. Police authorities confirmed the incident but claimed that ‘most of those involved had been identified and arrested.’

‘Only two shops were set on fire,’ said Sohail Zafar Chattha, SP Gulshan Town. ‘The police moved after the incident and located the culprits to arrest a total of 17 people with weapons. We have also registered FIRs separately at the Sohrab Goth and Sachal police stations.’

On Thursday afternoon, a clash between two ethnic groups with the backing of their respective political parties was reported in a locality of the Gulberg Town. Use of firearms in the clash spread panic in the area.

Incidents of armed clashes and firing in the air were also reported from Orangi Town, Baldia Town, Sohrab Goth, Quaidabad, Gulistan-i-Jauhar, Gulshan-i-Iqbal and several other parts of the city as the two ethnic groups continued to challenge the writ of the law.

In North Nazimabad, tension gripped a locality when a large number of residents of Hassan D’Silva Town received the warning notes from unknown groups to vacate their houses ‘at the earliest to avoid further trouble’.

Imran criticises MQM's campaign against Pakhtuns

QUETTA: Imran Khan, the chief of Pakistan Tehrik-i-Insaf (PTI) has said that the MQM leadership's hue and cry on Talibanisation in Karachi was aimed to purchase weapons to arm its members and sympathisers to expel the people of other provinces from the metropolis to retain their domination in Sindh's provincial capital.

Speaking at a press conference and addressing the Balochistan bar association respectively on Saturday he strongly demanded that the Muttihada Qaumi Movement leader Altaf Hussain should be extradited from London to be tried in Karachi in the murder cases for killing of innocent people.

He said the MQM propaganda regarding Karachi's Talibanisation was to create problems for outsiders particularly Pakhtuns who came in the city for jobs.
Imran Khan said the tragic incident in Mumbai was a condemnable act but the decision to send the ISI chief to India was a cowardly act of the government. He said the ISI was a respectable national security institution and its image should not be tarnished at the international level by sending the organisation's chief to New Delhi.

He said the government's report indicated that foreign saboteurs were involved in the bombing of Islamabad's Marriott hotel then why did our government not summon the intelligence chief of that country. 'We are not against intelligence-sharing with our neighbours but no country has right to summon the ISI chief,' he added.

Khan while criticising the United States and western countries on the Taliban issue said when the Tamil Tigers conducted suicide attacks on the Sri Lankan army, Washington and London never dubbed them as 'terrorist, extremist or fundamentalist.'

He asserted that the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan's tribal areas opted for suicide attacks to avenge the allied forces led by the United States and maintained that if the United States and NATO forces and the security forces withdrew from Kabul and the tribal areas respectively then the suicide bombers would stop the violence.

He strongly demanded the reinstatement of the deposed judges and bringing an end to the military operations in Balochistan and the tribal areas, adding that political issues should be settled politically and not militarily.

Imran Khan said we supported the PPP-led coalition government on the issues to reinstate the deposed judges and annulling the 17th amendment but the rulers have deviated from the committment made with the people of Pakistan which is why we have no option but to launch a movement against the government.

He said the APDM's agenda was limited and on Saturday he had met the alliance's convener Mahmood Khan Achakzai to convene the APDM's meeting to discuss the country's situation.

Four killed, 77 injured in Karachi violence - DAWN

KARACHI: Four people were killed and 77 were injured, including 11 women, in incidents of violence in different parts of Karachi on Saturday as ethnic tension continued to tighten its grip on the city of 16 million.

Pirabad police said two unknown gunmen opened fire in the Bukhari Colony area of Orangi Town at about 2:30 p.m., killing two men and fleeing swiftly.

Later, three bodies were brought to Orangi Town's Qatar Hospital while injured were being treated in different hospitals around the city. One person was also killed during firing in the De Silva town area.

The Quaid-i-Azam International Airport was also put on red alert and the airport's special passes have been cancelled for security purposes, television reports said.

The incidents of violence struck various parts of the city, including Banaras, Orangi Town, Quaidabad, North Karachi, Nazimabad.

The resulting panic led to traffic jams in different parts of the city, including National Highway, M.A. Jinnah Road, and people depending on public transport are experiencing diffiulties.

In Nazimabad area, miscreants forced shopkeepers to close down markets whereas rumours led shopkeepers in Light House, Zainab Market and Jama Cloth Market to close up.

The Pakistan Rangers have dispatched 45 mobiles to different troubled areas, while the city police is operating on an emergency basis, reports said.

Only few areas of Orangi town are affected from violence and the rest of Karachi is at peace which shows that this is a act of terrorism rather than ethnic violence.
