On 1 July 2016, five gunman attacked Holey Artisan Bakery in Gulshan Thana, Bangladesh, resulting in 29 deaths (20 patrons, two staff members, two police officers and all five of the attackers). Alongside clubs, knives and crude improvised hand greandes, the five gunmen were armed with locally craft-produced sub-machine guns (SMG) known to criminal groups as well as security agencies as the ‘AK-22’. This is typically stamped on the upper receivers of these guns. In recent months, these types of weapons have been more frequently seized; the earliest examples are believed to have been recovered in Chittagong in 2008. On 21 February 2016, RAB-7 (Rapid Action Battalion, Chittagong unit) seized three AK-22 SMGs from a militant training camp in the remote Banshkhali hills during an anti-terror operation. On April 23, RAB-7 seized five AK-22 rifles after raiding another training camp run by the militant outfit, Shaheed Hamja Brigade. According to security officials the weapons are becoming increasingly popular with criminals and militant groups alike due to their low cost (around Tk300,000 and Tk400,000) and the .22lr ammunition it uses being cheap and widely available for civilian uses such as hunting and target shooting.

The weapons are cosmetically similar to the Kalashnikov series of rifles, appearing somewhat similar in size to the compact AKS-74U. Variants featuring both side-folding and telescoping wire and sheet metal stocks have been identified. Despite the visual similarity to AK type rifles, the weapons are mechanically much closer to simple sub-machine gun designs such as the British STEN, firing from an open-bolt with a simple lever sear trigger mechanism and having relatively few moving parts. The weapons are capable of automatic fire and use high capacity magazines of various sizes, which may also be craft-produced. Variations in quality and finish can be observed, with some examples being clearly hand painted and assembled with cheap Phillips head screws, while others appear to be blued and assembled with rivets or Allen head bolts. This likely suggests that designs are improvised from materials at hand, and may indicated the work of multiple gunsmiths or groups.

India’s National Investigation Agency have reportedly learned through police interviews with a suspected operative of Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) that Pakistani gunsmiths had visited the district of Malda to train local gunsmiths in the production of AK-22 sub-machine guns. The gunsmiths who received assistance were from Munger in Bihar, a region notorious for the widespread production of locally made single-shot ‘katta’ pistols, supplemented by relatively sophisticated self-loading handguns in more recent years. Officials suspect that the Pakistani gunsmiths who visited were from Darra Adam Khel in the Northwest Frontier Province, famed for its production of high quality copies of military small arms.

During the attack on Holey Artisan Bakery and O’ Kitchen restaurant, two police officials were killed by improvised grenades. 20 hostages, including 18 foreigners, were found dead in the cafe after Special Forces finally entered. A video released following the attack shows the perpetrators in front of an Islamic State flag, each armed with an AK-22.

No Gunsmith of Pakistani origin is involved in that, citing the fact that .22 lr is not widely used in Pakistan, when it comes to AK pattern instead we have AK's chambered in original caliber,7.9 mauser,7.92x33 kurz and less known 9mm variant.Haven't seen any of these is Pakistan...
@DESERT FIGHTER shed some light on that bro because people's from Dara Adem khel have reached far East Asia, with there Gunsmithing techniques....

The gunsmiths dont need to be making .22 firearms to impart expertise on them. 0.22 is a cheap rimfire and has really low chamber pressure. Anyone making serious firearms like what you talking about could throw a couple tips on .22 in their sleep pretty much.

Like asking a car manufacturer for tips on how to make a bicycle.

What this means is that local places of large public congregation, e.g. bus & rail stations, hotels, restaurants all have to become very adept at detection and reaction to these armed intrusion situations using CCTV as well as metal detectors - of which a large section is already adept at this post-holey artisan scenario. Armed guard companies will become even more popular than they are already. Well-to-do households already hire their own well-armed guards.

Arms shipments from across the border have to be checked as well - via satellite as well as via common intelligence techniques.

What you didn't realize, or didn't question - is where Maldah district is. It is in West Bengal, India.

The arms were smuggled into Bangladesh....they were not made locally.

India is a free-for-all and is a haven for this sort of illicit activity. Their only law-keeper is pot-bellied policemen who can be bought for a pack of cigarettes.

As Mr @Bilal9 said,How come Pakistanis from dara adam khel were able to travel upto west Bengal, without coming under Radar on Indian Government.

Obviously since BD sucks at making anything that doesnt involve cheap fabrics.
Also jute and Myths, they are also good at..

Cool!!
An attack in Bangladesh by Bengali people using domestically produced guns and somehow it is INDIA that have DISCOVERED a Pakistani hand!
EPIC!!

Get over with the obsession guys!!
We had nothing to do with the big bang either!

This was allegation from the JMB source interrogated. Who knows what the real information route was like if such exists. Need not even have involved physical transportation of the source gunsmiths themselves (could be intermediaries etc).

There are plenty of illegal Bangladeshis in Pakistan (Karachi area etc) who may have been those that took some basic training and then transferred to BD somehow. Then the BD-India border is porous and Malda area is somewhat of a sanctuary given Mamata votebank policy.....so just like the JMB guy managed to slip across border to Kolkata, it is possible the same happens for other JMB/JEI people.

Blueprints could also have been exchanged online....who knows for sure (its just a vague allegation). It is not hard to fabricate a .22 rifle....the tolerances are very forgiving.

But still it's not that easy to produce a modern weapon without supervision of Master Gunsmith...

India&Kangladesh are like a duo of 2 retarded brothers who loves to make conspiracy theories.

There is already gun production going on in Malda area and Eastern Bihar.

Don't even need good steel, aluminium will do the job for a .22 bolt, carrier, seers, trigger assembly, receiver body etc...given its full auto blowback (thus lug cyclical stresses are pretty much non-issue)....though stainless steel is probably needed for the barrel and chamber (if you want accuracy past 100 rounds or so).

A standard backyard lathe with a parts diagram and assembly instructions...you could churn out quite a few relatively quickly (aluminium is really easy to machine with little coolant)....esp if you dont really intend to use them in a professional extended scenario.

I agree,I have seen making of weapon in these cottage factories but still they are not that much easy though in one case I saw a .22 lr rifle body was made out of Industrial Plastic.
